Canada's tariff is fighting against a rising tide. Its not their fight. Instead of putting a flimsy fence around it self to stop water from comming in, they should just go with the flow and take advantage of it by doing what Mexico is doing. They shoud ask Chinese companies to construct factories and shops to provide high number of employment.
I am so jealous we have no selection in Canada,,,but BYD will be buying some plants from Stellatis
I hope they do. The shark looks lovely 😍
What is really missing is affordable city car like vw id3. It's Sells in China for 15k us $. I feel like when it comes to Australia vw will try to charge 55k au$ for it so we need similar Chinese cars starting at 20k.
Probably closer to $65KAUD for ID3 going by what the Golfs cost these days. The days of 20KAUD cars are gone can't see it coming back where you could get a mirage or excel for under 13KAUD drive away.

No tariffs. Nice. In Canada we have politicians agitating for a 100% tariff to match the US. While at the same time Canadian manufacturers have been subsidized to the tune of $50 billion and *still* are not providing any evidence that they will produce economical vehicles. They're addicted to producing behemoth luxury tanks that average consumers are balking at.
Why not 2,000%? You will out do the American
@@DouglasW-m9zDon't give them ideas.
Think about the large Canadian car industry that would get destroyed...😏
@@DouglasW-m9zcome on 1 septillion %...think big!
Why? Just let the good ppl in state build em for ya. Years ago I watched Battle Los Angeles in Cineplex, they just straight up calling Canadian 'alien', the audience laugh in awkwardness. I knew back then the ppl in state don't give a two cents about their neighbor in the north.
My concern is vehicle support & spares for the actual life of the car. It’s one thing for all these OEMs to start importing to Aust to sell into new markets to sustain their production output. But will they be here with appropriate technical & spares support when they are needed.
And it’s not like there isn’t already a history on marques pulling up stumps. Case studies: Daihatsu, Leyland, Holden for starters.
The ute community in Oz are rusted on diesel lovers. We desperately need some desirable electric utes. Of course they will be scoffed initially but a few will sell and then word will start to spread. Then once test drives start to happen, stand back, because the floodgates will open for electric utes.
A sparkie to my house in his diesel ute. There was a lot of good natured banter about my Tesla. So I gave him a drive. His jaw dropped at the experience and he rattled his way home, stunned. I can only imagine the conversation at the pub that afternoon with his tradie mates.

I think we need to be very cautious about handing over our entire car market to the Chinese to save a few bucks. I can see it being fraught with major problems.
@@simonmiller5118 yes I completely agree.
China coal imports from Australia stopped by China.
The perfect trading partner. 👌
Wonderful, wonderful ❤️
I reckon that the BYD Shark will shake up the ute market once it's released here. Being a PHEV it takes away the range anxiety that some people have. As for power it blows all the other utes away.
@@simonmiller5118 I agree with the sentiment but feel it is a little too late. After all, we've pretty much handed them everything else already. :(
What Australian city dwellers need is more affordable electric hatchbacks.
HEAR HEAR!
BYD Dolpin, MG4, Ora Good Cat.
These EV's compete around price parity with the likes of Toyota Yaris & Corolla for example. So there is already "Australian city dweller" suitable EVs here.
I'm surprised that the GM x SAIC collab Wuling Mini EV hasn't been adapted for Australian markets yet (potentially under a Holden GM badge). I would happily snap that up as a city runabout.
@@tilapiadave3234 😂 You fail to understand that the intention of the whole systemic energy transition is to develop the "circular economy" in parrallel with it's evolution.
I already have two EV component recyclers (including batteries) near where I live. Their recycling success rate is 99%. What are you talking about?
If you want to talk about waste, think of petroleum products, because once it is gone, it is gone for good, but we use it like it will go on for ever. Think of those huge guzzling vehicles people seem to think they need. 😂
@@BrentonSmythesfieldsayeI believe the call was for "more". Obviously there are some, but 3 is not many. Of the 53 new cars shown, most are SUVs or bigger. A few large sedans, but not a single hatchback that I could see.
My cousin has a BYD Yuan Plus (Atto 3). I had the pleasure of driving in it last week. Lovely vehicle. Thinking of getting a Seagull in 2 years or so. The BYD dealer here in Jamaica is also the Kia dealer. Honda Audi and Porsche too
Why do we need large boxy 7 seaters. Huge, heavy cars. The average family size is getting smaller every year in most countries around the world. I'm so glad there are limited utes too. I know so many will disagree with me but who cares. Australia needs to think about efficient vehicles. I see sooooo many jacked up utes that probably have never seen a tool in the back in their lives. What we need are smaller cars. My uncle used to own a Holden HQ ute. He was a brick layer and that ute was a real work horse. When real tradesmen drove real cars. A superb tradesmen and person. RIP Oh, he also put a camper on the back and drove around Australia with his wife.
Who cares what you think we need to buy?
Nearly half cars in Australia now are 4WD or all wheel drive with ground clearance for camping.
What's on offer to replace our ICE cars with electric are either low and impractical or top end costing real-estate prices...
When do we get electric cars to replace our current ones?
Missed out on the BYD Seagull and the Hyundai Inster... :)
We need evs less than $25k!!
You say that but all cheap EVs have been rubbish
My wife and I are looking at buying an EV by the end of the year. I really feel like the way things are taking off it might be better to wait 6-12 months and see if some of these new brands/vehicles coming to Australia are either better or will drive prices of older models way down.
I'm pretty resistant to buying a car with NMC batteries with the way LFP and other options are developing too.
BYD Fangchengbao 3 is a pure EV
Been wanting an EV since the very first Tesla! Nowadays a ute is essential, so we'll have to hold out for more choice and more competition!
Bring it on!
It will be good that more ev vehicles will give Australians more choices at competitive prices.
Great video layout for so many brands Sam..keep up the positive work.
139 EV manufacturers of
MaoMobiles….all but one going bankrupt.
Thanks a ton!
Broadly agree.
Ford Ranger base model diesel is $36k.
We need PHEVs and BEVs Utes at this price point.
Also BEV and PHEV larger SUVs.
But also we need to start seeing city runabouts like the BYD Dolphin at drive away price starting with a '2'.
Agreed.
Australia might have no import taxes, but it has Australian Design Rules that are being used to keep more affordable EV's out of the market (the Mitsubishi EK/Nissan Sakura as new imports and used Japanese imports being one example). Australia should adopt either European or Japanese regulations and keep to those regulations.
Hi Sam.
Can you please do a video on what and when new charging infrastructure will be coming to Oz to charge all these new cars? If Australia becomes like California where there are major queues every day at charging stations then all these new models will struggle to sell.
@@kenbehrens5778 Australia is struggling to provide enough power for its current requirements and its getting worse as older power stations go offline as they transition to renewables,.
Tradie charging his tools all day long,
Great sound system in the quiet vehicle 👌 😀 happy driving and unwinding on the way home.
Government trade assistance tax breaks. 🙄 more happy.
No tradie works on his vehicle today.
Sam, your enthusiasm is amazing and I hate to pour cold water over it. But only15% of Australia's primary energy mix is hydro+renewables (giving electricity) which is not even enough to supply your household electricity consumption. 85% of your primary energy source is fossil (2023). This mean all your eV's are charged by electricity converted from fossil fuel, either oil, gas, or coal, with the exception of a % of households and farms with private solar installations.
I am very happy that you love BYD. By all means support China's eV industry, be a friend etc. But to imagine these eV reduce your CO2 emissions is a complete delusion.
And since Australia has a hybrid primary energy profile for a long time to come, PHEV vehicles is a good match. A car is not a gadget in a shop but one element of a national energy system. BYD's DM5 with 2000km range looks pretty good to me.
EVs energy efficiency means even when charged from a dirty grid, they represent a significant reduction in emissions and greater energy conversion efficiency. Plenty of detailed studies on this have been published.
Thanks so much

NETA X Smart can’t wait
20million vehicles in Australia.
1million new each year
20years to replace all ICE vehicles.
Petroleum will be imported for road building and petrochemical industry and emergency heating mid winter and old ICE vehicles.
So that's the numbers if electric future.
V2G and selfparking selfplug-in will be the greatest valued feature.
Battery technologies are evolving rapidly, and future battery replacement should be cheaper.
With so many models and spare parts, availability may be a problem.
With such a large EV market in China, going with big brands like Aion , BYD, xpeng, and Geely will ensure spare parts forever.
20 yrs to replace all ICE vehicles?
Yeah sure.
@robertfonovic3551 you laughing at me ???
Do you think it can be any faster 🤔??
I think it might be faster than 20 years. EVs are gonna get so good and so affordable, not to mention self driving cars from the likes of Tesla, it will become silly to keep an ICE car let alone buy a new one
@yellowfig812 I think petroleum prices will drop to maintain cash flow as long as possible.
ICE vehicles will get very cheap, and spare parts from the wrecked vehicles will be cheaper.
This will slow down the transition.
People in outer isolated towns will be slower.
Maybe the old technology will be replaced in ICE vehicles.
Petrol tanks and engines removed, electric motors in and battery installed.
Who knows.
Some people will be busting to get hold of a unique vehicle before it disappears.
I thought KIA was lying when they said the reason for the EV5 delay was problems with the wheels. Last week I went to NZ and found the EV5 was delayed there, just the same. However, the reason was different - nothing to do with the wheels and all blamed on a downturn in EV sales in NZ. Now I am pretty sure KIA is lying to both countries. I have a theory that LHD sales in Asia have been higher than they expected, so decided to make a lot more before switching to RHD production. I reckon they figured lying was better than admitting that they simply changed their scheduling.
Also, EV's in Aus are MUCH higher priced than in China, and to suggest they will be almost as low is rubbish. I think Sam is wrong when he says they are import tax free here. As far as I can tell, Australia slapped a protective tax on imports to distribute subsidies to Holden and Ford. About ten years back they decided to remove the subsidies over I think a five year period, at something like 20% per year. This is why both Ford and Holden stopped making cars here. What ensued was our greedy government didn't remove the import tax by the same annual amount and, as far as I am aware, years later to this date have the full tax on imports. Pure evil.
Sam the LDV Maxus is for sale in the UK, it’s not any good so didn’t sell. They leased out thousands of unsold units from £75-£99 per month for two years.

Hey Sam , BYD just released news that U9 Supercar was tested at the track 375Kph top speed, price @ 1.69million Rmb.
I want a car with actual bumpers.
Planned obsolescence, another interesting point; disposable cars. I imagine they might be designing with the expectation people with not replace the battery, as they will want the new features required by law, new styles as finishes wear out. Third-party aftermarket parts unavailable, too many models to support.
Apropos - processor limited; hardware deprecated, won't run new software updates, special subscription or hack required after new battery installed to receive critical updates just to keep car legal, regulated as an exception 'classic' car. By then, the chassis is a flexing piece of wet cardboard, early models outlawed by municipalities exorbitant insurance as a fire hazard. Not allowed in certain areas, near people, or certain hours.
Yippee!!
I am going to be purchasing an electric vehicle in the next few months. One of my key questions for the dealer is “What is your software update history?”.
If a manufacturer isn’t trying to keep up with the style of software updates that Tesla do, then I’m really not interested, no matter how fancy the car looks.
If a product was properly manufactured ,why the need for updates?
@@robertfonovic3551 How about adaptive headlights? Which were a recent Tesla free software update? How about updates to the user interface, the braking system, the efficiency?
All Tesla updates that purchasers have received for free.
A car is no longer just a static device. It’s a platform.
And they need to constantly improve, not just until you drive out of the showroom.
This is why it’s so difficult to go past a Tesla, no matter how much I dislike Elon Musk.
I actually hope that the dealers answer is: “We are on our umpteenth iteration and a software update is scheduled weekly/monthly”.
That way I don’t need to buy a Tesla.

I believe GM was losing money on the Corvette, but it got the customers in the door--like Lotus. Those who couldn't afford a Corvette bought an Impala instead. Will all these vehicles have servicing infrastructure coming to Australia with them?
😂😂😂
On the one hand this promised flood of new models is great: it means more models thus greater choice and will no doubt have an impact on prices making more options affordable. On the other hand there is a history of manufacturers coming to Australia and then leaving; some recent examples Daewoo, Infiniti, Chery (I know they're back now), Great Wall (again they're back) Opel and of course our own Holden. When they leave those who have bought their cars are left with vehicles with no technical support and no guarantee of parts supply not to mention that on trade in they are worth less because no one wants them (for the reasons stated above). In the case of the promised new brands from China we wont know until the "long term" ( how long that is is like asking how long is a piece of string) which brands and models are in for the long haul. Some consumer advice about doing your research and choosing wisely seems like a good idea.
Buy cars from the bigger companies, BYD, Geely, Chery, GMW, SAIC, Changan. Xpeng cars are fancy but the company is way small compared to the others, They might survived by sold over/merged to other bigger ones. I heard VW owns a lots of Xpeng shares?

So 53 new Chinese EVs are coming to Australia. Will there be infrastructure built to support these cars, dealerships, maintenance facilities in every major town in every state, dependable parts availability, etc. I’d say 50 out of the 53 will fail so I’d give it 5 years and see who is left standing in the rubble before shelling out my money for one of these cars.
Of course not, these guys here are idiots.
Australia is now free to import any vehicles they want because they no longer make cars. Markets that have auto factories tend to try to keep imported cars out with tariffs. I wonder if some of those automakers wish they had stayed.
I wonder the cost of shipping a car from Australia to California

A lot of EVs are coming but not many charger stations around Australia.
The rate of public charging installations is accelerating. In 2024, the rate of rollout has doubled and that will increase again. A significant share of charging can be done at home as well.
As of 2024 in Australia
Petrol stations sites - 3,459
EV charging station sites - 840 (2015 to 2023)

Lol, I love the false comment about no import tax! Did you forget about GST? Yes, GST is a tax. While Australia enjoys free trade with China, there are still many import charges, like bio security, meaning each and every car will have an inspection done. ADR compliance is another cost. The only tax that is not charged is import duty.

No. Ranger and Hilux are heavier, yet no one grizzles about that
Paul connoly, "were any doubters allowed"? I attended mostly to see the eHang 'flying brick' wrongly described as a flying car, it is an overgrown drone and lethal if anything goes wrong, but as they once said ,"life is cheap in the east". My work has mostly been in the aircraft industry here and in Germany and USA with stints in the design studios of Ford and GMH et al and focusses now on creating an Australian flyable vehicle industry: the only unsaturated or played out segment of the personal mobility field and thus an opportunity, perhaps the only one, for this country. I found Sam's sycophantic fawning about Chinese vehicles to be dumped here because of no tarrifs and "nothing to protect" to be appaling as was his gloating about Chinese destruction of Western production as though our lives and jobs and future don't matter . When we truly have nothing left and the Chinese dictate the iron ore price or get it from their west African mines this country might realize how we sold our heritage for a mess of pottage.
I was cancelled (microphone forcibly grabbed from me) between the first and second parts of a twp part question when they realized i was a dissenter.
Hope that answers your question. (Sam walked away after the talk when I was waiting to talk to him together with published material , remaining wilfully ignorant...)

Yes, kow-towing is an art form.
I’d like a 7seat 4x4 PHEV from China that would be better priced than Tank 500
I just want to be able to buy a Baojun/Wuling/mg Cloud. I won't just buy an SUV.
