I didn't really like this song until AJ did this tribute. Pushing limits but certainly not afraid to do this for us. At the time there were comments that she couldn't belt. Don't hear that comment any more.
The difference between her performance here and those made at 16 y/o is the key she uses. In this performance, she's matching Whitney's soprano. As she's continued to grow up, she has moved more and more into her trademark lower register.

again - well observed. A jazz singer, even if she's only 12 years old - she's usually behind the beat, sometimes ahead - which doesn't make it easy for new bands to work with her. Not that they don't know the fact, but it usually takes time to accept that this child knows everything about the Jazz tool kit and can use everything in it. Others have already explained the difference in key to her current rendition and the soprano/contralto thing. Many believe that Angelina was just testing her limits here, but I agree with the shark - the she-can't-belt comments finally annoyed her. But as impressive as it is when Angelina sings this in her own key, I like this early cover so much because - as usual - she conveys the emotions not only with her voice but also with gestures and facial expressions and so much passion.
She is either almost 13 or just barely 13 when this was recorded, it was posted at 13 y 2 m. This is in the same key as Whitney recorded it in the studio, & she is pushing her voice to the limit here. Her later versions at 16 1/2 (both live & in the studio), she sings it 3 semitones lower with ease. She is a contralto with a rich, resonant, low register, while Whitney was a soprano with a powerful high register. I prefer her more recent versions over this one & even over Whitney's original.

She grew up on jazz, and this technique or way of singing is very common in that genre; being slightly ahead of or slightly behind the beat. It may be perceived as changing the rhythm altogether, and maybe the two are the same. Anyhow, she was either very late 12 or very early 13 here, more or less silencing those who up until that time had been claiming that she couldn't belt.
