- I've recently been speaking with people who are just starting their cloud/tech career journey. The question of Cloud vs Networking has come up a few times in these conversations. As a career Networking/Cloud professional, I wanted to share my perspective with my network.

Thank you Trevor, this is the exact video I needed! I just got my CCNA last month and I'm going for the AWS CCP and plan to get the SAA afterward. I like networking but cloud seems to have way more opportunities and room for growth. I feel like CCNA gave me a strong foundation to succeed in cloud.

Good Video! I started my studies a year ago for a professional degree in IT. I went for the CCP before my studies really got going. I didn’t really get any interviews with that cert (plus a little bit of school) by itself. Only after I got the CCNA, I started to get invited to interviews, and eventually landed my first IT job at a service desk.
I love networking, but there’s not so many networking jobs out there (in my area).
The good thing about taking the CCP first, is you learn stuff that the SAA don’t cover, and you get the 2nd/ next one for half the price!
A networking background is probably good to have going into any IT direction anyway…
So I’m still thinking about it, but maybe I’m supposed to go SAA and move up into the cloud?!

Thank you for the video. I feel good about my choice now. I'm in an AWS re/start program prepping for the Cloud Practitioner Exam. We actually take the exam in 2 weeks. Going for the SAA afterwards. I want to be a cloud engineer. Spent the last twenty years working in a warehouse. I don't wanna do that anymore.

This was helpful, I’ve been studying for the Network+, and I plan to take Security+. After that I was torn between CCNA and AWS. Btw I love the instruments, I’m also a musician 🎺
My husband is a Network Engineer and has been for over 15yr his job started to integrate AWS and a team and he went and got the AWS networking Cert which was pretty hard and now he works in the AWS networking space with his job and it came with a huge pay raise

Based on my experience, the AWS Cloud practitioner study guide can be read and done within 1-2 weeks and ready to take the exam. The CCNA you can’t.
I agree with this.
I would put SA Associate on par with CCNA. Not cloud pract.
Do know there is a hell of lot you have to know to be a Cloud Engineer. Most Cloud Engineers come from a Sysadmin background. You need deep knowledge of Script Programming with Bash, Python or Powershell because the Cloud is all about DevOps Automation. You kneed to learn IaC such a Terraform, Configuration management such as Ansible, Puppet or Chef, Linux as alot of Linux is used in the cloud. AWS is entirely Linux based, Networking, DevOps practices with CI/CD, Kubernettes and Containers, Virtualizatuon, Security, Databases, Azure Active Directory, Group Policies. This is NOT something you can learn over night. It could take at least two years!
I wanted to point out peparing a Cloud Engineer career also comes with a steeper learning curve than Networking. There is a reason why most Cloud Engineers come from an existing Sysadmin background that made the transition. A lot of fundamental knowledge such as Kubernettes and Containers, VMs, SQL Databases, Azure Active Directory and Group Policies, Storage, Linux, Security, Networking, DevOps IaC Automation such as Terraform, Ansible, Scripting such as Bash, Python are essential skills needed. Many of these things can take over a year or two leaen and be proficient at it. This is not something you can leaen over night. I see alor people take these exams bur forgot the DevOps Automation and Scripting part. No real Cloud Engineer would deploy an infrastructure manually from the GUI.

I decided later in life to get into tech since I loved it so much as a hobby. I went back to school and got a degree in security and assurance. I have have had exactly ZERO security jobs. I ended up working help desk and eventually got other jobs that were more challenging. I have been in technology for 10 years now and I am only now being paid what I wish I made 10 years ago and if I am being completely honest, it's good but I would prefer better pay and that is mostly because of my DTI. Student loans are the devil. If you can avoid it please do at all costs. Several years ago I worked a support role in the cloud division of a big name company and that was pretty good but short lived (downsizing is a SOB). I like cloud engineering and cloud security. So, I am taking some time to learn what skills I don't have and eventually get familiarized with either AWS, Azure or GCP. One day I hope to transfer to one of those groups as all are utilized at the company where I work.

Have my A+ and Net+. I was trying to figure out whether to go and get my Sec+ to complete the Trifecta or get my CCNA, but it looks like AWS is the smarter choice, so I may start looking into that as far as career path, thanks for the information.

That was an interesting choice of input. You mentioned Cloud Engineer vs. Network engineer, so rather than say something blanket like AWS or Cisco (which could include all kinds of jobs unrelated to engineering roles), I put Cloud Engineer and Network Engineer in the search and get more Network Engineer jobs popping up on Linkedin (only about 1.5 times). But then on Indeed, there were almost 3x Cloud Engineer roles compared to Network Engineer on Indeed. That was nuts hah!
Yeah - its kind of hard to get a full picture.
Especially because "Cloud Engineer" is not normally the job title given to someone working in AWS.

I am also little confused, I have worked as a Technical support for basic devices. Now I am confused that I go for Aws cloud cert as it is getting popular now a days or so ccna.
Damn 7 years on Help Desk? If you plan on progressing in your career you shouldn't be on the Help Desk that long. 2-3 years as th max.

really helpful ! I would also be interested in an video how easy it is to switch from an „10 years into networking career“ to a simular payed cloud position. How long would you guess learning is necessary and is it worth it?
I'm not sure if I will make a video like this - mostly because I've found it difficult to connect videos like this one with an audience.... Idk how to market that content in a way where it actually helps people and gets in front of eyeballs.

Good news for people looking to follow a similar path is that it is easier than ever to make that sort of transition.
My goal is to be a cloud engineer and Im interested in networking as well. I wanted to take CCNA first to get into IT But Im 46 and want to get a job fast . Judging by this video my best option is to get a cloud cert first.
CCNA could be good too - It really just depends on what opportunity is available to you.
But there is no bad option. Focus on learning something new, and things will follow. Wether you go CCNA or AWS certs.

That is what I did a bachelor of science degree in computer science coupled with CCNA and CCNA Security……… I am afraid of vendor certifications in my opinion in themselves are okay but need to be coupled with something far deeper and more rigourous and it should also be noted without good experience they do not account for much.

I worked as a network engineer for almost 10 years, I have CCNA and that foundation helps me a lot on passing the AWS SAA. Nowadays now my role is on the Project Management side, however I'm still thinking to go for the CCNP, I feel like it's a pending goal in my carrer.

You said it exactly I want to learn broad information about stuff because I don’t know what my niche is yet, but I want to start learning and I’m so overwhelmed by trying to choose what to start learning that I’m not learning what can I start learning while looking for a entry-level job right now so that I can work a job walk continue learning anybody have any ideas? I vote cloud :) - Networking is an awesome career, but the growth potential has been eclipsed by cloud roles in recent years. Of course, security will always be an excellent field... but I, like many engineers, suffer from finding compliance/security somewhat boring.
I've found that going from Infra>cloud is a relatively easy jump for most infra engineers.

@@abrahamsteinberg8374 Its a good idea to know some basic scripting no matter what role you have. Networking, cloud or security. Most people I know working on AWS know at least some VERY BASIC python. At minimum, you need to be able to read code. Especially if you want to be a security professional.
Coding is the most important skillset of the century. So I could never recommend someone plan their career decision around avoiding learning basic programming. It would be far too limiting for your career to close yourself off from that option.

Hey Trevor. Thanks for the break down. I have been working as a cybersecurity analyst for 1 1/2 years and am interested in moving into a cloud security engineering role. All I have for certs is a Comptia Sec+. Do you think getting Cloud+ and some Azure certs along with my experience in the field would be enough to transition well into a Cloud Security Engineering role?
yo so in brief you do not have any other certificate other than comptia sec + and you go the job ?
@@Reginaldo5400 Correct. But I also fought for the opportunity. Division of a larger company I was working for got sold and had to build a new IT team from scratch. They knew I wanted to get into IT because months before I was messaging the execs on LinkedIn. So there were certainly other factors involved there. Sometimes you just gotta talk to people man

I think the info still holds true - While less people are getting hired directly at AWS, jobs growth is still strong in the cloud space.... as of right now anyways

Sir can I begin my IT learning journey through cloud services although my college degree has no relation to IT ? I really wonder how can I build a system on the cloud will I don't know how to build it in premises, anyway I spent a lot of time preparing for ccna and have a good idea about ip classes and subnetting, static and dynamic routing, dhcp, dns, stp, vlans and fhrp ....etc

Im planning on getting ny A+ first before I start learning and working towards a career and certifications in AWS. Personally, I feel like the A+ is perfect for a basic foundational level of computers and technology, but others say I may be wasting my time? What are your/everyone elses thoughts on this approach?
Get the A+. it gets you thru the door, never forget about the fundamentals man
Not sure how these job salary platforms collect their data but as a mid level network engineer, I can tell you that I have not made such low numbers as reported in your video in the last several years in the couple jobs I've had. I think the starting pay 10 years ago for a mid was maybe 80 to 90k. Add at least 50k to that nowadays and it's more accurate. A lot of my network engineer friends that are mids are also in the same range. 96k is way too low. In fact, it looks like I make more than all the cloud engineer salaries you covered (which I'm thinking are potentially also being under reported in that case?). I think cloud engineers are more in demand currently and there's less of a supply which is why cloud engineers are going to get paid more in today's market. It just seems that these salary platforms are severely under reporting the salaries lol.
Yeah - it’s a huge aggregate.
Very difficult to get accurate numbers even from BLS.
These averages aren’t very reflective and can go much higher faster… or even much lower sometimes depending on zip code, company, etc.

One thing about networking that I dislike is working at odd hours because of upgrades or outages. Is there a lot of that in Cloud?
It all depends. I'm more in VMware environment but our networking team works more weird hours than our server teams do

After passing the CCNA is jumping to AWS Solution Architect a good idea? I am thinking that CCNA can give you some advantage and allowing you jump straight to AWS SAA.
I think its a good foundation that can lead to a cloud cert for sure
I always recommend the AWS SA associate along with free tier experimentation for folks seriously interested in learning cloud

Really hard fine entry level jobs for cloud n most entry level jobs require 1 yr experience in I.T. I feel like start at networking job then move up to cloud eng. Cloud eng not really entry to it i say more like mid level type job
I would generally agree with this.
Entry cloud jobs are becoming more and more common, but it is true that many people build their skills in another technology then move over to a cloud role later.
The bigger. cloud becomes, and the less relevant traditional infrastructure becomes, the more this will change tho.

It does both for sure.
You kind of have to choose a provider platform to learn cloud. There is no other way.
At least; there’s no other effective way that I’m aware of unless you’re just staying high level and not hands on

Absolutely! Cloud security is a rapidly growing industry.
Cloud growth is still ~30-40% y/y globally, and cloud security is following that trend.
AWS has security certs and such for people specifically targeting AWS security.
I'm a 11 grade Student, I'm planning to complete my CCNA course before my high school viz. by the end of 2024..
I'm experienced with Web Development (HTML, CSS, JS, NodeJs NextJs), bit of Python and Java..

should i even bother with networking? ive been in help desk for 3 years now and i still have a hard time wrapping my head around networking. I can study each device individually but my brain cant see the bigger picture when I go to different sites.
I think everyone should know a little networking - but also everyone doesn't have to be a networking interest.
I always just suggest that people do what is most interesting to them personally.
Sometimes, taking a break from a certain technology for a few years then coming back to it will give you the space to see it with more clarity though.
As long as you're always learning something, you're good. Networking is just one piece of the puzzle.
Are you talking about just earning the certifications, or are you talking about them in addition to a bachelors degree? Another way of wording that question is, do I need a technology type degree in addition to the certification/s?
Certs are cheaper, degrees last longer
There’s no clear decision on one over the other. Just do what you can.
For most, degrees are expensive and certs make more sense

Is it realistic to believe I can pivot from Cybersecurity Analyst to Network Admin easier than if I would've done it from Tech Support?
Of course, I'm taking my CCNA first and I'm taking in a few months as right now I only have Net+, Sec+ and Blue Team Level 1 certifications.
