    cyber gills has some really interesting implications, because it makes underwater colonization way easier. it'd be pretty nice to live underwater right off the shallows of some beach

      Man I'd take cyber gills in a heartbeat. I struggle to properly hold my breath underwater, so just being able to breathe would be a Godsend.

      It is utterly absurd and shows he didn't do the calculations I did in middle school. Water does not contain enough oxygen for mammals with gills to use it.

    I agree with most of what you say. though I have a problems with this video, in the idea that we shouldn't consider people with pacemakers cyborgs. the modern conception of cybernetics is closely tied to transhumanism, and transhumanism is the belief in the use of technology to transcend normal human limits.
    For me, someone with a pacemaker is both a transhuman and a cyborg. their heart stopped working correctly and instead of just accepting that they upgraded themselves with technology, surpassing normal human limits in the process.

    • @isaacarthurSFIA
      @isaacarthurSFIA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I don't dispute that one can argue a pacemaker makes someone a cyborg, I think I used it as an example, but rather that we [people as a whole] don't view them as that, so we can't really have a definition of the term that includes that. In fact I'd rather imagine we'll keep moving the goalposts for what the public views as a cyborg to exclude more implants as they develop.

    Another awesome episode! The following concepts you described:
    - lungs that can filter out toxins to get better oxygen in order to breathe easily in low pressure without long adaptation periods or needing a drug like Diamox to help with altitude sickness
    - using a filter that can extract oxygen from water
    - your throat being sealed up to protect yourself from the vacuum of space and start scrubbing carbon dioxide so you can use it as oxygen
    - alterations that let you eat a rock and process it into everything you need without the need for food supplies and plants as the middlemen
    - the bands near major arteries that could clamp down as tourniquets if you suffered an injury that causes massive blood loss
    - the idea of losing your head but waiting for it to get reattached while your body has nano machines to maintain it's function
    - picking up and remembering what you read without a bookmark
    - modifications to let you walk around without an EVA suit on an airless moon
    - swim around in ultra liquid nitrogen while looking and feeling human
    One word: FASCINATING! :)

      If we are able to use meta materials in the design of any of these types of situations, it could be insane. Imagine being able to have a negative refraction ratio, to where you could see any wavelength you want In the accuracy you want to, meaning the landour effect doesn’t occur and you can ignore red or blue shifting.

    Great episode, as usual. Every time that I thought, "wait he's missing something important!" the very next thing you said covered it.
    Tired of the drudgery of workaday severed heads? Suffer no more!
    (Might be better to armor the arteries and spine so that decapitation is almost impossible, except where the force would gel the brain anyway. Of course, that's where the quick-eject head launcher comes in handy. It could be automated, to escape trauma before it occurs.) (Imagine a crowded street full of so-equipped people about to get blowed up by a terrorist IED: in the first milliseconds of the explosion, all their heads would pop off, rocket upward and parachute to safety. The future is hilarious.)

    There are two classes of cyborg. The mechanical derived cyborg (here on out called mechborgs in this paragraph), and nanobot derived cyborg (also called nanoborg for this paragraph). The mechborg already exists, for people with disabilities and the tech keep growing. Now, getting a robot arm (that shoots rockets or lasers) because it looks cool is probably not a wise choice. You're wearing a heavy metal object (that could be possibly physically poisoning) that you'd have a hard time lifting and doing anything cool with. Why? Because the rest of your body is still human, to bring any force to your "rocketto punch!!!" you need the whole body working in tandem. The only way to circumvent this is too pretty much be: A. a robot. B. A transhuman (also a robot, but an N.I). C. Genetically engineered behemoth (possibly redundant at this point). D. A cyborg so rioded up on metal parts they might as well be transhuman. This is why when I see a cyborg in media that has robot arms and legs, that guy would just have dangeling arms and running like a flopping fish at super speed, I face palm. Because his torso can't deliver the need Force, basic physics. Sharks have their muscles connected both to their cartilaginous bones, and skin allowing them incredible springing force. A Nanoborg comes in two flavours. Soft Nanoborg, and Hard Nanoborg. The soft Nanoborg just has nanobots acting as small cells. To fight diseases (really scary to think about if someone hacked that, but those are the risks with new technologies), fix aging, and to aid as replacement cells. Dude or dudette would like a normal human. Now a Hard Nanoborg takes this to a wholly different level able to replace all his or her cells (if that means anything anymore) with nanobots, They may still stay cosmetically a human. This isn't me disagreeing, this is just my mind swimming with ideas and giving my two cents.

    I can seriously imagine one of the main devices casually implanted will be an universal interface. The reality of such a device would be that you could control a vehicle as if it was your own body, with the vehicle's very powerful sensors completely replacing your senses. You may see almost all control panels being replaced with such an interface, as direct control is arguably an exceptionally high bandwidth method of manipulation, that could just be universal. Just some food for thought. :)

    • @prakadox
      @prakadox 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      You don't get a leg up in status from having access to those powers, but having those powers is quite awesome on its own. The internet and broadband gives me access to a lot of great information like Isaac's awesome videos. Do I care that I'm in a set of 3 billion or so who have that power/access. Hell No! I want the rest of the 7 billion also to get it. You still have to be able to use it well - How many use the internet to read up on khan academy? But the few who are motivated enough to go for it, well I guess that's the real superpower nowadays.
      BTW. Real serious. Especially for medical matters, its great to have large samples. Rare diseases can have specialists that may not be possible in a small world. Many iterations can make crazy sounding ideas like sky diving into pretty decent enjoyable activities.

    Love the video, but shall just comment upon one little thing. To put cameras on each person may provide benefits to security, much as a panopticon is ostensible quite fine in this regard. But they must be avoided.
    Governments and corporations already gain so much information and control over the lives of people. To provide such a powerful tool to whoever is above regulation is to sign away even more of the liberties we hold dear.

      Anon
      Worst case scenario: personal integrated recording devices become wildly popular among some crowds allowing them to record and share things they see on a whim and the technology becomes affordable then an authoritarian government mandates everyone must have them installed at a certain age and the government has access to all the data. The thought of an oppressive regime literally being in your head is terrifying.

    • @ouroboros7031
      @ouroboros7031 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      That ship has sailed. Governments of most nations can easily afford to buy everyone a personal camera.
      Yet no government seems keen to do anything of the sort.
      P.S. If anything, actual real world authoritarian governments are having the most trouble with this tech, as they can no longer oppress anyone without everyone else knowing.

      Some of my point is that it doesn't take authoritarianism at all, just that those who form and regulate the bodycams could then access it easily. So when the NSA or DHS decides you're too uppity, they spy on you to better plan the raid or find the obscure tax law you broke.

    I would like to get a cybernetic implant to stabilize my emotional states ( I have Bipolar Disorder). The research says that the primary problem is not so much excessive activity of the Amygdala and Limbic system but a failure of the Ventral Lateral Prefrontal Cortex to dampen and stabilize emotional surges.

    I don't really see the problem with defining a cyborg. Not every definition has to be entirely binary, especially when it comes to concepts like life or morality.
    Here's mine:
    "A Homo Cyberneticus (usually called a cyborg in casual speech, but that word may also apply to animals) is a human being with both cybernetic and biological elements within their bodies."
    Sub-definitions:
    "Human: an animal born or created mostly from the DNA of a Homo Sapiens."
    "Cybernetics: *electronics* permanently attached to a living body that are not purposefully harmful or meaningless for the host."
    And yes, by my definition some people already are cyborgs. So what? They're not very sophisticated ones, but it's not like "cyborg" is a derogatory term, so why avoid the word?

    • @darthguilder1923
      @darthguilder1923 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree with you, and this is a very good definition

    • @milkhbox
      @milkhbox 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Elavion Dremorill I like your definition, though, I think your definition of what is cyborg is should include non-electronics to some extent. A rough example, Cody's magnetic finger. It gave him a extra ability that we as humans may never evolve naturally. it was a semi-permanent, granted. (He later removed it after a few years) I still feel my point I valid, though. Again, not disputing you, I just think your definition should be a bit more inclusive. Let me know what you think.

    • @bozo5632
      @bozo5632 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Maybe: Any physical objects with functions that are integrated into the bodily system.
      "Into" is important, to distinguish from prosthetics and tools. (Holding a knife or wearing sunglasses doesn't make me a cyborg.)
      "Functions" cuz that old splinter that never came out doesn't make me a cyborg.
      "Integrated" cuz you have to be able to use it. Seems obvious, but - someone else's toaster bolted to your ass doesn't make you a cyborg.

    • @classarank7youtubeherokeyb63
      @classarank7youtubeherokeyb63 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think a reasonable addition to "cybernetic" would be that it should match or exceed its natural counterpart in most areas of interest. Giving me a cyber-arm should generally be an improvement to my quality of life, even if a small one. A cybernetic heart will not give out on me sooner than my current one (or an average one) and does not hinder my physical abilities or open me up to other health risks. This definition hits a bit of a snag where maintenance is concerned (say I'm smarter than einstein and could break dozens of athletic records without even trying, but would cease to function within weeks if I was seperated from a cybernetic society). Still, I'm not aware of any prosthetics of any kind that can truly match their organic counterparts.

    • @JulianDanzerHAL9001
      @JulianDanzerHAL9001 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well, the only real problem is that "cybernetics" already has a different definition and I know many people who work in cybernetics but have nothing to do with electronics attached to a living body - then words with 2 or more different meanings exist, it's not too big a problem

    I think, even when Cyborgs sound cool, they are very impractical when it comes to altering your full body for strength, age and so on. The only things in which cybernetic implants become helpful, are our eyes, ears and other perception organs. And maybe cybernetic communication (kinda like telepathy). For everything else like strength, endurance etc. genetic engineering is far more effective and the way to go. Can't understand why people are so much against it. Genetic engineering can make your lost teeth and limbs regrow, heal cancer and much more.
    Now, if you want your body to become completely robotic like in Ghost in the Shell - then cyborgization might be good. But it's very elaborate and expensive to maintain.

    • @prakadox
      @prakadox 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Genetic engineering is no good for oldies like us whose genetic destiny was set a long time ago. You would have to do something like a full flush of your bone marrow cells or some such procedure which is almost as high impact as going for a full nano suite in your body.

    • @isaacarthurSFIA
      @isaacarthurSFIA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I could and would make the argument that you'd probably see both, folks who are genetically engineered and cyborgs, most folks who are okay with one are with the other too and you can argue that GE is a type of cyborging.

    • @jopiart
      @jopiart 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @johnathanmartin1504 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @Prakash Chandrashekar That was true before the advent of CRISPR. If that is combined with nanomachines, you can genetically engineer adults, which is awesome. If you don't want to have nanomachines in your body you can have them injected into you for a month, have them make the genetic changes you want through CRISPR, then have your body flush them out.

    17:30 it's interesting that you bring it up. I work as a 911 dispatcher. From what I understand, we're working on tech that takes control of your smartphone's camera when you call 911 and streams it to me (which has definite advantages over relying on an on the fly narrative from an emotionally compromised participant). Given how intermittent and unreliable upgrades are in this field, I don't expect it during my career. At least I hope not, there's a reason I'm not a cop or EMT, I don't need the nightmare fuel visuals. But it is coming.
    On reflection, I think the gradual process of our becoming cyborgs is going to revolve around greater interaction between smart phone/convenience based comms and biology.
    further edit around 28:00 there's a serious psychological danger with memory augmentation. What effect will it have on you to be able to remember, with crystal clarity, how you felt during your first break up, or during the death of a loved one? I imagine we'll have to expand the DSM by a few volumes to cope with the effects of tech advances.

    • @enviromental2565

      Absolutely. There are happenings in everyone's life, mine included, that we would like to forget altogether. However, some people live with deep psychological trauma from past experiences could benefit greatly. On that note I will call it a day.

      That's an excellent example I had not thought to use.
      I'm a very big proponent of 'infinite wealth'.
      The idea is that everything that can be automated, should be.
      Imagine what we could do with 100% unemployment rate, money-less economy and 'infinite wealth'.
      We could build a country-sized space ship and we would do it just for fun.
      I organized kids when I was a kid. We always had some sort of 'project'.
      We made a complex 'fort' made up of tall grass tied together to form interconnecting tunnels, we made a huge system of rain catching aquaducts out of a hillside (the idea was inspired by marble run), etc.
      We always did something and no one got paid. We did it for fun.

      There are three needs people have:
      Recognition:
      I got rich because I wanted to be respected and that wasn't happening when I was poor.
      Lack of scarcity:
      I've done some insane things and I still do some insane things on the stock market just to push scarcity away that much more.
      I'd probably be more productive if I was an engineer or something-- (god only knows how many hours I spent in Auto-Cad or From The Depths)--
      but the income from a normal job is PATHETIC and fights against inflation and taxes, instead of gaming it.
      Wealth is an exponentially growing industry, not a fixed sum.
      Any physical task you can do, a robot can do better, without sleep or emotional fulfillment.
      Fun:
      If I had unlimited money, I'd hire people to make a video game.
      The time and effort invested would very likely exceed any income it could ever generate.
      My only motivation would be 'because I wanted to'.
      Capitalism is not the end game. It is a stepping stone to something greater.

    If society as a whole had been developed under less corporate profit based drive, I would have been intrigued in the idea of some form of symbiosis between man and machine. Seeing how cars, smart phones, and laptops or just in general have degenerated in regards to the manufacturing process involved within this technological revolution. That has chosen mass production of sub par products, on an intentional mannerism so as to precipitate the rise of replacement parts, updates, ease of breakage, so as to beat that cash cow to its last dollar, from the consumer. I could not nor would not want any form of replacement for limbs, or integration of eyes, ears, lungs etc. With the sole exception of natural injuries or lose of limbs from war.

I was inspired by your videos to create 3D maps of local exoplanets and map out potential paths for colony arcships and laser highways. Do you think you could do an episode on real, known exoplanets? Topic might include which ones are good candidates for exploration, what life might be like for colonists on them (like how it would be different for colonists on one vs. another) and what interactions between colonists might be like as they slowly become more connected with each other akin to what it was like for primitive human tribes which rediscovered each others existence long after their ancestors parted ways here on Earth. I'd be happy to contribute any materials if you need them.

    +Isaac Arthur ,One of the things that I thought of when you mentioned the psychological effects was the negative effects not related to gaining a massive ego. If a person loses a limb due to traumatic injury, it could trigger conditions such as depression and PTSD after getting a replacement. Let's say this happens and you get a cybernetic arm that is superior everyday. While it would be an overall improvement, it could also be a daily reminder of the particular traumatic incident that resulted in this replacement. Now, imagine is a large portion of your body gets replaced like that, and it can lead to existential crises such as wondering if you are even human. I come from a military background, so I'm imagining a troop on a wrong side of an IED, RPG, or a mortar and having a PTSD attack in the mornings when they wake up and see their cybernetic limbs.

    Founder of cybernetics is: Ştefan Odobleja 13 October 1902 - 4 September 1978) was a Romanian scientist, one of the precursors of cybernetics. His major work, Psychologie consonantiste, first published in 1938 and 1939, in Paris, had established many of the major themes of cybernetics regarding cybernetics and systems thinking nine years before Norbert Wiener.

    for the calculating 8 digit numbers quickly, there is actually a method for learning to do that called the Trachtenberg speed system of mathematics. so far i have i have only learned the multiplication side of things tho even that makes a difference. it has also been pretty easy to learn so far.

    20:20 "As someone with a neurological condition that makes my hands shake." Finally, someone else. The most annoying part is people asking my why my hands are shaking. That is to say the same people over and over as though I've never explained it to them before, and no doubt will continue to have to do so.

    11:50 - You're basically talking about seasteading there. Basically setting up floating islands or barges in international waters to avoid government regulation and taxation.

    Human sensory input is already naturally throttled down, so with even more stimulation there would also have to be thought put into how to buffer that sense as to not be so distracting one couldn't put their thoughts together. Also interesting to note that is a new sense were to be detected by the brain, like a cochlear implant, the brain is the one that determines how to translate the data into useful information over time. There has already been some early work done with people who have lost their eye sight but have live optical nerves and small light sensing electronics.
    Recently found this series I find it very refreshing to hear more in depth analysis on these topics. Thanks for you work.

      Yes it's rather surprising too how adaptive the brain is at rewiring itself, I tend to suspect that neural lace is going to be quite hard in most respects but turn out to integrate surprisingly easily in some others.

    One handy augment is a device that quadruples the energy and nutrition output from food. or even uses other sources as a alternative(you mentioned rocks). Eg no need for food meaning a no hunger, 4 times better means 4 times less food needed. Yea it's kind of a sobering though to some day never need to eat or drink, but at the same time never feel hungry or thirsty. And considering food is 25% of my budget and will only become a larger expense I can see myself more than willing to do such a thing to my body. Freeing up that money for more important things like getting out of the rut and get one with my life!

    Respirocytes are my favourite cyborg upgrade idea. Drastically increasing the blood's oxygen capacity with disease immune machines could overnight make people many times healthier, and make their muscles much more resistant to fatigue without replacing them.
    Given it's a blood replacement the procedure wouldn't need to be as invasive either, just a drip with maybe a pint of the stuff draining a regular pint from you, and boom, a body that takes ten minutes of sprinting to tire
