if you made a meat tree you'd probably have to make circulatory, nervous, and immune systems in the plant closer to that of an animal. It'd also need extra mechanism to recycle or excise waste produced by growing the meat (which is just muscle tissue) I'd like to think it's grow it in pods which would be all weird and squirm because the nerves stimulate the muscles inside to prevent atrophy and help them grow. Also when you picked them they would probably like seize and freak out because of their parasympathetic nerves lol.

@@weston8400 The tree will cook its own bacon in the fruiting pods and, when fully cooked, will drop it down for easy harvest as the bacon strips are actually the seeds for new trees. There will be no seizing, freaking, or squirming (except if you tickle the tree under it's veiny limbs.)

The problem with replacing your eyes or ears with cybernetics is that you're in deep trouble if the people making the cybernetics aren't completely altruistic. Dune has Tleilaxu ayes and Paul Atreides muses "Who knows what bondage goes with metal eyes?"
Seems especially relevant now given the way big tech uses algorithms to shape the societal Overton window.

@Infini Ryu "It's a rather easy question" I can tell you never heard about the debate surrounding sickle cell anemia then. According to current research, the gene that gives people sickle cell anemia also gives a resistance to malaria. So no, it's not an easy question, especially since we're still very much at the stage where we're pushing buttons to figure out what they do and are far enough along to realize that "causing A also causes B as a side effect." Making a cure that ends up worse then the disease is not "silly religious superstition", it's a violation of basic medical ethics. And dismissing that makes you a total moron at best and a complete sociopath at worst.
Thank you for reminding me that I am dealing with technologists, not biologists. Most of you would flunk bio-ethics so hard, even letting you clean the toilets at your local doctor's office would be illegal.

Sarif was right about one thing. It's in our nature to want to rise above our limits. Think about it. We were cold, so we harnessed fire. We were weak, so we invented tools. Every time we met an obstacle, we used creativity and ingenuity to overcome it. The cycle is inevitable... but will the outcome always be good? I guess that will depend on how we approach it. These past few months, I was challenged many times, but more often than not, didn't I try to keep morality in mind, knowing that my actions didn't have to harm others? Time and time again, didn't I resist the urge to abuse power and resources simply to achieve my goals more swiftly? In the past, we've had to compensate for weaknesses, finding quick solutions that only benefit a few. But what if we never need to feel weak or morally conflicted again? What if the path Sarif wants us to take enables us to hold on to higher values with more stability? One thing is obvious. For the first time in history, we have a chance to steal fire from the gods. To turn away from it now - to stop pursing a future in which technology and biology combine, leading to the promise of a Singularity - would mean to deny the very essence of who we are. No doubt the road to get there will be bumpy, hurting some people along the way. But won't achieving the dream be worth it? We can become the gods we've always been striving to be. We might as well get good at it.

I want to live *way* longer than humans do (preferably a couple hundred years or more) just to witness/experience/use future technology we're almost definitely not gonna have in my lifetime. Yet I feel like I'm gonna reach "death by old age" before the technology to extend our lifespans by much longer even exists... and that makes me sad...

Finally someone addressed the problem of gene interactions down the line with the weightlifter bitter example. Most people tend to think as genes as instructions that can be added and removed at will to get a singular result. But the reality is that the genome is highly interactive, interconected and complex system, where even a small alteration may lead to large unintended consequences down the line.
When people think about messing with genetics, they should think of it more on the lines of how they think of making changes in the timeline in a time travel scenario with chaotic interactions being the real danger.

One thing I think I've noticed about human brains specifically is they are extremely adaptable. I believe that if a human was born with extra limbs (like arms or fingers) which are in an operational state, the brain teaches itself how to control them by applying random inputs and keeping track of how the limb moves as it does. It does this until it builds the reflexes required to carry out what the mind wants to do.

That bit at the beginning about making people as smart as the smartest person and as strong as the strongest person is the basis of two of my sci-fi characters. Both are the products of a now shut-down experiment.
The first is physically "perfect." His bones are tougher. His muscles are stronger. He's basically got a combination of disorders working together to make a captain-america-ish body for an otherwise normal person. The second character is his little sister. (They aren't actually related at all.) She's designed for perfect recall and speed intelligence. She has a combination of perfect recall and extremely speedy neurons.
I've also got characters with varying degrees of augmentation. The pilot for example has had his visual processing modified for a HUD and has a neuralink-style device that can control HUD like a monitor. Flying and EVA are both easier when you don't need to look away from what you're doing to see the instrument panels. The mechanic had a previous job as a "proxy." He was able to allow somebody else to "remote in" to some degree to either just ride along or even take the wheel for a set period of time. The copilot doesn't have any mechanical modifications, but she does have some gene tweaks for dealing with space better.

Just look at how many times those systems have changed in the past 30 years, and think about the impact on technology if we forced a single, standardized interface.
Now think about the prospects of getting an 'update' to that, either an implant or a biotech organ, every couple of years. Remember, this is embedded in or directly connected to your brain. Neither of those options seem encouraging.

Hell the BCI hardware could outright be grown, reconfigured, & maintained by micromachines. so no surgery needed, though that would be a longer-term tech.

the section just after 13:11 where he talks about connecting the brain to computers and stuff, reminds me of the anime shows "Ghost in the Shell" and to a lesser extent "accel world". the former explores a future world where cybernetic brain/machine interface is common and the social consequences. the latter has devices called neural linkers that serve as personal computer pugged in to the the Brian via back of the neck, and used to play VR games.

New organ transplant technology would be a great improvement over the current options. Especially for children intestinal transplants.

The key to organ printing for transplant lies in space. Zero G allows the small blood vessels and other interior structures to be built without them collapsing or sticking together while they are constructed.
Good news is this is already being worked on. I have seen a 3D printed heart valve that actually functioned when a low voltage pulse was applied.
We are getting there. Just have to hold this body together a little longer. hehehe

When it comes to displays with tings on people seem to forget that the are of vision for humans is limited by the brain's processing power and eye structure... If you can find a way around that maybe it woud be possible to increase the 'visual area' for adding the displays. Then if they can find how that intergrates with teh rest of the mind and the processing is handle by the augmentation, maybe people would not need to take thier eys off of whatever they are doing, as they are already "look at the displays', the difference would be like you stopped to concentrate on a sound, in this case a an augmentation display. Rather than augmented reality overlay.
I have serious concerns about a brain linking to devices by non physical means as that may leave them vulnerable to remote threats. 'Close circuit', so to speak, sounds like a better choice. It a;lso leaves them vulnerable to subscription model manipulation (which includes the provider being at fault) or overrides. Something to think on.

This is an awesome technological potential on the verge of being tapped into here but it is as moraly empty as any other technology. Not only does it not mean anything without some sort of ideology, it is also completely impotent. We are happy to let consumerism define our current use of technology but even with our current level of technology, it is not at all obvious just how powerful it is until someone decides to go to war with it, you would see the same thing here. There is absolutely the risk that you end up with something like the Borg here if you have intensely competing nation states, only the generous part of our nature combined with mutual fear has stopped us destroying ourseves already, but the risk becomes exponentially greater when you incorporate virtual reality propaganda into lived experience - th potential for extremely powerful propaganda is very great.
If you have a pre-programmed reaction of extreme disgust and hate when you see a competing group or alien species that makes you want to collectively exterminate them - you might have a very powerful evolutionary advantage, but you also create an unbelievably hostile group of people. Imagine you have propaganda functions behind your eyes that make anyone who refuses to pray with you look extremely aggressive and dangerous and disgusting - you might look to destroy such a people out of self-defence and think of yourself as an honourable crusader for good. If ISIS or a group like them got a hold of this it's probably what they would do.
Another example would be the 'scots whae hae' bit in the 'forever war,' book - Imagine soldiers that could be instantly cued to extreme levels of agression and fearlessness with a voice command, very useful but morally questionable.
Once you go down the neuralink path (which comes with a lot of extra-ordinary advantages, as outlined in this video) you have to ask yourself what it means to be a person and a human and what sort of society you want, because 'god' is completely out of the picture at that point, we would finally have hammered in the last nail on that particular coffin.

Ahjahahahah! Damn, most episodes have some line that is sooo quotable...
This video, it was "And now you have a bunch of musclebound lunatics with perfect teeth wandering the earth.".
My all-time favorite might still be: "We know aliens will be tough, because you don't claw your way to the top of the billion-year-deep corpse pile of Darwinian evolution by being wimps." Wonderful.
