  • On the evening of the 22/07/2021 a pair of German Air Force Panavia Tornado aircraft were transiting the Atlantic headed for Germany, they were supported by a USAF KC135 as tanker support. During the course of the crossing one of the Tornados experienced an in flight emergency with an engine failure (callsign - Retro21 reg - 46+24). The crew declared an emergency and made a mayday call to air traffic control (Squawk7700) the decision was then made to divert to Prestwick. The emergency aircraft and another Tornado(46+52) then peeled away from the tanker for an emergency landing. As a matter of course the airport fire service deployed and an HM coastguard helicopter were made ready for incoming emergency aircraft. The 2 aircraft then made an approach, and the emergency aircraft landed safely and was escorted on to stand with airport fire service in attendance. The accompanying aircraft then flew onwards to its home base in German, whilst the support tanker landed at RAF Mildenhall as planned. As of the 23rd July the aircraft remains on the ground at Prestwick.
Nicknamed the Tonka here in the UK the Tornado is an extremely capable combat/strike aircraft and was once a familiar sight in UK skies but on the 1st of April 2019 Royal Air Force Tornado aircraft were officially retired, so as a result this was very much a welcomed sight despite the emergency conditions in which the aircraft encountered. The Tornado remains in service with German, Italian and Saudi Arabian air forces.

What a great catch mate. So pleased you were able to film this and share it with all of us.
We had the Luftwaffe TORNADOs doing low-level training over here about 4 years ago, they were great to see. Excellent footage. Liked 😊

Thanks for watching - appreciated. Despite the engine failure and emergency it was good to see a Tornado again sadly missed from UK skies

@@robbrownplanespotting It will probably be gone over here soon.
I dont know the exact plans, but my father checks the engines (gladly not the one exact one from the video) and always tells me the rumors about the closing of the Tornado era.
I just love this plane, its not that agile but has its own unique character I think.
      Greetings from Jagel, Germany :)

@@lunte97 Tornado is fondly remembered here in the UK for all its faults it has as you say its own unique character, which will be missed when they are gone for good. Thanks again and best wishes from Scotland

Nice catch Rob, I'd seen him on ADSB and saw he'd squawked 7700. I had thought the tanker was just coincidentally in the vicinity and was heading to help so thanks for the explanation to clear that up :) And yes, the Tornado is a proper awesome aircraft and we were foolish to retire them in favour of the EF.

Tonka Mudmover more than capable of operating on one RB199 engine, you can see from vid that the LH TR bucket wasn't deployed, nice shots though.

Deffo more than capable of flying on one engine, this one did drop the centre ferrying tanks to cut down on the weight too. Thanks for watching. :-)
