- Sunday was another record-setting day for rainfall in Des Plaines. Additional 0.11 inches rainfall on Tuesday set new record of 8.30 inches for the month of May.
The Des Plaines River at Algonquin Road was measured at approximately 20.1 ft. as of 8 a.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service, or what is considered “major” flood stage.
Approximately 3.1 inches on rain fell on Sunday, which set a new record for May 17, the weather service said. Sunday’s total was on top of 4-1/4 inches that fell over a two-day period last week, also a new record.

This looks about right! I can't imagine living near the river, floods every year without fail. Great job putting this together so quickly 👏👏👏
Thank you very much! It took majority of my day:) Rain was holding me off.
Luckily due to quarantine, I am doing my classes online. My college, seen a couple vids before the end, is completely swamped. No way in no way out. It sucks but you learn to live with it
@@bluejay3125 Yes. Oakton College is completely inaccessible. Surrounded by water. Buildings look ok though.
What? Living next to a river isn't the problem, it's the city daming up the river further up which causes a huge collection of rain water that inevitably leads to floods.
Everyone saying it’s heartbreaking lol if you live in Des Plaines you’re probably used to seeing some sort of flooding any time it rains in this town
True. It is every year. But this May is the wettest in history though.
PrimoMedia - Chris Biela this is only the fifth largest flood though in Des Plaines. The one in 2017 (I think it was that year) was way worse. And there was one in the early 2000s too. Very bad even along the Chicago River branches to the suburbs east of us.
In Lemont IL where I live, it is known as the Des Plaines River valley region. The town is along the hill where as the river is far down the hill. A train bridge goes over the river and anytime it rains, that water goes from being 8 feet below the train bridge to about a foot and a half. That river is incredibly vulnerable to flooding. My area of the river was preserved being known as pristine wetlands with endangered species so no residential areas get flooded. I don’t know what they were thinking to populate the north stretch of the Des Plaines River given how frequently the water levels fluctuate.
same I live in des plaines
Very well done video. Definitely shows the unforgiving power of water.... I live on the very west tip of DP, and didn't realize it was this bad in other parts of town. Very sad.
Thank you very much. Downtown DP and neighborhoods around river are always hit the most but I have seen some flooding in Mount Prospect, Arlinghton Hights as well.
Thank you for sharing this footage. It's heartbreaking to see my town like this. Our basement flooded for the first time in 7 years this past Sunday night. Really enjoyed our 7 year break! Hopefully we aren't back to getting flooded every time there's a major rainstorm event.
Oh. Sorry to hear that. I will keep my fingers crossed. Thank you for watching and best of luck.
Amazing footage. I have no idea in hell why people would live or own any property there, this is like a yearly thing.
Well. I'm sure they have reasons. It is annually so kind of expected, I think. Thanks
Great video! This seems to be a regular occurrence around the Des Plains River. I'm surprised people still live around there knowing this happens.
Thanks. I keep wandering for years how they do it.
Well, as a des plaines resident, I literally had no idea a flood ever even happened....
That's a lot of water! What a disaster. Well captured Chris!
Thanks Ben. Like do not have enough problems. Right? It is heartbreaking.
@@chrisbiela Yes it is. Take care and stay safe!
Thanks. We try to hang in there.
Good work. I've been on the east side of Thatcher & Lake. Didn't know it was THIS bad on your side
Thanks. There is more street closures but I can't fly in those restricted areas. It is bad almost every year. May in particular.
potter and dempster
@@mykmmc why cant you fly? what do you mean restricted?
Great production
Thank you very much
Great footage. Im in des plaines but luckily not close to the river.
Thank you very much.
Great Drone Footage Chris. I grew up in Des Plaines and it would always flood like this.
It is almost every year. I have seen it twice a year in 2016. Thanks.
Yes. I lived off of Mt Prospect Rd and 83. One year I walked in waist high water to work. They built that wall but not enough has been done to stop that river. It’s a shame. I live in Aurora near Naperville now. Same issue with the du page river. 🤦♀️🤦♀️
@@maaste6557 Thanks for your comment. Really appreciate it.
@@maaste6557 the wall works, exept for when the tide rises higher than the entire wall. The tide isn't supposed to be this high there, but it is thanks to dumbasses downstream that decided to build a fucking dam.
I used to live there and it would always flood 😮 but this year it did not flood
Great job, good footage...
Thank you very much.
Why is this river always flooding?
Good question.
Wow. Those are some great shots. I really need to get a drone one of these days.
You should! Thanks
@@chrisbiela what drone / hardware would you recommend for a first time drone person?
@@CastleBomb44 Hmm. Hard question. Depends what are you aiming for. Video, pictures, just remote flying? There is a long list of drones but I prefer DJI Mavic 2 Pro.
How do those creepy campground buildings survive being flooded ever year, for the 35 years I’ve been alive.
I guess they are more solid then they look.
They are built with real wood... not cheap garbage.
@@YHVHYeshua I'm sure they reinforced over the years.
Those campgrounds are creepy as hell! Lol
This is my hometown bro, sadly it’s not the first time. Stay strong DP ✊🏾✊🏾 we’re stronger together
Thanks man
I graduated from this school I’m officially a middle schooler memories bruh❤️
I hope some good ones. Thanks.
Everytime I think or see this river I instantly remember John Wayne Gacy 😕
Interesting. Thanks
Damn, I used to work by there, I can’t believe it got all the way to that McDonald’s.
Also, I have a friend who works at the Wheels company which backs up to the river, they’re fux’d.
I'm sorry to hear that. Thanks for watching.
The drone video shows the magnitude, quite close to the record flood a few years back. It's a bit hard to know where exactly the drone was flying over. I would like to see continuous footage, i.e. flying along River Rd., and showing intersections. However, appreciate the work.
Thank you. I did not recorded the areas where the flood did not occur. I do have more footage but to long of the clip would be boring to watch.
There were three cars completely submerged under the train viaduct on Golf Rd. I watched as a BMW, a Nissan, and Lexus emerged as the water was pumped out. Fancy cars completely destroyed by unthinking drivers. The day before I other parts of town, I saw cars plowing through water...not knowing if it was deep or not. One lady, refusing to go back and around...actually got out of her car with an umbrella and went tapping along trying to figure out the water depths. She wound up plowing through the water also. Crazy.
Wow. I didn't go that far to check it out because of high voltage lines close to the viaduct. Can't risk my drone but I believe there were more cars out there since I spot one not that far away. Some people are crazy and paid a high price for their actions. Thanks for the info.
Gosh! I stepped out in the water two days in a row. Did not see any power lines either day. The thought did not even occur to me!
Thank you for this video, I live near all this and I know all these places. I was hoping to see how bad the water levels are at the Carmelite Monistary at the north east corner of River Rd and Central. That is where the cloistered sisters live, the back of their property backs up to the river. So scarry for them.
I was filming out there. Didn't make the shots into the clip but they are ok. Back of the building is flooded but inside looks dry. Thank you for watching.
I was going to ask why there weren't any shots of the infamous Big Bend Drive, but then I remembered that 90% of its homes were torn down so I probably wouldn't have recognized it from above even if it were in here (was it?)
There is a few houses on Big Bend dr. I included 1 shot from that particular area at 2:36.
great work, amazing sites. loved the lower thirds at the opening scene
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you
I was looking for a house in des plaines and I found a beautiful home but could not move in and had to cancel because of this
Sorry to hear that.
Does it do this every time it rains? Or was it just this time? If you live in des plaines plz answer
In 20 years I have seen it 3 times.
Excellent video. Is there any way you could add a timeline of where the footage was obtained? I grew up in Des Plaines, obviously recognized the Lee Street - River Road intersection. Curious where the other locations were. One of my high school friends lived in a home on Sherwood Road that had a couple of major flood events. If you look at the map it's obvious why!
Thank you. Everything was recorded yesterday. Tuesday 5.19.2020. I started in downtown DP area right after rain stopped. Around 11 am. Some shots are south of Dempster. I couldn't go past Algonquin because of Ohare restrictions. Then North school area, Rand rd& Des Plaines River road intersection, Golf road, Central (Oakton college). Both sides of road closure and Bend Lake area.
@@chrisbiela great footage - just curious how far south you were able to go. did you stop at O"Hare apt or did you also fly farther south?
@@dianecooper3931 I can't go past Algonquin Rd & River Rd . This would be 5 mile radius to the Ohare Airport. My drone will not fly in this restricted area.
Great camera work. As for destruction....that is heart breaking.
Thank you for compliments and... it is heartbreaking for sure
so so sorry for everyone there.
Thank you for your kind words.
Chris what’s soundtrack, fantastic sound
Thanks. This artist name is Borrex.
Awesome. I’ll follow.
Awesome, thank you!
What school do you guys go to in des plains
North
Were you able to get authorization to fly in Des Plaines through LAANC?
Yes. Limited altitude 200 ft.
Thats so crazy!!
Yes. It is.
Not sure if it was Elk Blvd or Rand Rd near the DP River I drove through one year, many, many years ago after a bad flood. Almost all the houses had For Sale signs planted in front of them. I feel bad for the people who keep buying there, not knowing about the flood risks.
I think they are informed. They are also required to buy flood insurance every year. It is expensive though. I feel sorry for the owners every year.
Looks a bit damp.
Yes, it does. Thanks for watching.
Lol😂😂😂
Complete Devastation. This makes my eyes hurt. BAK
That is gone now but it was heartbreaking. Thanks for watching
Where in dis planes is this footage taken?
Downtown Des Plaines, Golf rd, Central rd. All by the Des Plaines River.
🙏😔 I hope everybody’s OK
I'm sure they are now. Thanks
Heartbreaking 😣
It really is. Annually.
PrimoMedia - Chris Biela I just moved here 😭
@@warapachanga358 Not all areas are flooded. I live here as well.
Truly heartbreaking. And despite there never being a good time to say it, municipalities should regulate development in flood-proned areas. Too often realestate folks and developers sell stuff to buyers who simply do not know how to get the information they need that would prevent them from ever building in these areas at all. Sure 'buyer beware' is important as a concept, but lack of transparency and deceit by developers and even elected or appointed officials is unconscionable.
True. Where is big money involved there is no transparency. On the other hand all home buyers are not impulse buyers. If you buy a house usually you do some research. Unless it is super cheap, but then you know something comes with it. This is not a first time it happened so I feel sorry for those folks who are stuck with their property and not being able to sell.
If you're REQUIRED flood insurance, it's too close.
@@amberlea4506 It is but they still live there. I do not know how though.
my old school
Oh. Yeah. My kids as well.
I seen this before happen a lot wen i lived in Des plaines ILLINOIS
Yes. I have seen it a few times already but they did some mayor improvements to regulate Des Plaines River in last few years.
My dog loves the flooding
I'm sure it does.
bubba g the Mount Prospect (adjacent town) says do not get into the water...it’s not safe. That goes for pets also. Sewage and road way pollutants in that water. Ask a veterinarian before you have huge bills and a sick dog.
@@occipitalneuralgia2339 Good point. I do not own a pet so it did not cross my mind.
Awesome edit dude...
Yep awesome... there people die and that is awesome
Glad you liked it. Thanks

Is there another one in the US? I didn't know.
79 we used rafts down dee road
You still can. Thanks
My little big hometown :( :(
Mine too.
Mavic 2 Pro?
Yes.
OMG!
Thanks for watching
How much do you think climate change is the culprit for the floodings?
I do not think it has to much to do with flooding around Des Plaines river but for sure we get more rainfall lately which would suggest it is related to climate change.
OCC 😯
Oh well.
Now people will learn and should move on from this crappy city
Thanks

Thanks
Now all we need is hornet tornadoes and the Doomsday prophecy will be complete.
Ah?
:) Will not be that bad. Thanks for watching

Yes
@@raginipatel5154 Hard to put myself in those people's shoes.
They shouldn't live where nature rules. It will get harder every year that passes.
True. But it is to late now. FEMA already bought a lot of houses from that area. Would be much more people affected. Thanks
