In today's Clearing The Bases, I talk about an eBay seller listing some very misleading sports cards like a PSA 8 listed as PSA 10 because it should be, the Paul Skenes Topps debut patch auto with some Livvy Dunne added in, some massive vintage baseball card auctions, and more sports card, memorabilia, and collectibles news!

Update: that eBay seller has been removed!
That’s good news. Frankly as a seller on eBay, I just don’t understand why you would do that. eBay has a strong return policy. You’ll just get negative feedback AND you’ll be issuing full refunds
@@JunkWaxHero Those ppl just keep making new accounts and sell too good to be true items to suckers and dip out then start over.
Thanks Mike, I listen on Sunday mornings while I walk my dog in northern MN
@@danrossow2513 awesome!
“28 minutes…” You could have done 48 minutes and we would still be listening 👂 It’s amazing how you cover the hobby and bring to light so many interesting aspects of it! I would love to own that Jackie Robinson letter or those Tyson trunks 💰
@@iNeverHadMercy thank you! That means a lot
Hi Mike. Thank you for another "Clearing the Bases. Always enjoy watching this series. Have a great week.
Thanks Jim! I enjoy making it
Seen a 1973 Fleer box sell for 25k on whatnot and get ripped on screen. They were chasing Dr. J rookie. They didn't find one but did find 2 Wilt Chamberland. One had great centering all around.
Wow!
too bad they didn't find the Walt Timberland patch card.

I'm not a simp, I'm not a Pirates fan, and I can't stand Ken Golden. If I pull the Skenes I'm sending it to the Texas Snowman
Nice!
Recently I sold a couple of racing autos to a drivers grandmother via ebay. Didn't realize it until I was packaging them up, I contacted her and she said she was his "Gramma". He wasnt popular or really that good tbh, but he was a young local NASCAR driver. She said she's filling albums of his cards for his kids one day. She informed me he graduated from a local university and is now in law school. Interestingly one of the cards was a ttm auto I got on a sp parallel.
@@Jumbo_Jimbo_in_Limbo that’s really cool!
I'd take up Livvy Dunne's offer. I figure I could get her to break up with Skenes after she hears about my job as a mailman. We'd end up getting married and I'd live off her money, so that 2 million wouldn't really seem like much.
lol comment of the week
Honestly she would break up w him solely based off of your commenting skills 😂😂😂
Mike turning down cheap Olivia Dunne clicks should have been the headline.
I have standards, Dan 😂
If the cubs were doing something like the pirates with one of their stars, id be all over that deal.
Great episode. Yes you’re critical of Topps and PSA but you give them their praise when it’s deserved. Always a great job of being unbiased.
Thanks Steve
ps, 3 - 63 parallels is just absurd!
it's not usually deserved. .
@@BringingTheHeat-VBC lol if I like a card design?
@@PennySleeveSteve almost 600 dopey name releases of different cards per year. That's just Topps. There is also Panini, Donruss and Bowman. By the time you add them all up and all the "Out of's", you have a 3 million card checklist per year to collect them all. That's just BASEBALL. It's regodamndiculous but a good time to be selling the PennySavers if the cards don't end up at the landfill where they belong. Good luck!
I was a huge Andre The Giant fan as a kid yet I've never watched Princess of the Bride.
That’s your homework for today
and watch the father of the bride afterwards. If there is still time, Bridesmaids for the trifecta Princess of the bride boy..
Its in my top 50 of all time. Its still totally watchable too, not outdated or anything, no horrible special effects.
Thank you for the hobby update
I’m at the point where if buyers are willing to buy on whatnot, they reap what they sow!! How many scams must be exposed on that platform before people stop using it (Blake’s breaks should have cratered the company by itself, more and more scams since)
The interesting thing to me isn’t the scams, but how whatnot handles them. And it’s rare that we hear those stories. If I were whatnot and I felt like I was handling them well, I’d use that as PR.
Golden has the worst search engine of all time. The last "premier vintage auction" was easy enough to scan through so I bid. Normally, I don't even fight trying to find a few cards in their haystack of crap because of it. And never will.
Topps Update baseball hangers arrived in Walmart this week. Easy-peasy - grab a hanger, go get a price check. If you hear the alarm, keep the hanger. There's a better than 50/50 chance a $10+ card is inside. If you do not hear the alarm the chance of something $10+ being in the box is closer to 1%. Don't hear the alarm, just put it back. Usually works for blasters, too. If Topps is this sloppy with retail boxes and hangers, they can send whatever box they want to whomever they want and simply send boxes with alarms inside. Easy-peasy.
What do you mean the alarm?
@@JunkWaxHero When you scan the box at self checkout, if you only hear one beep and it is the price being scanned and entered, then the box does not contain an alarm (or has a dead alarm). And there is not much regarding contents. If you scan the box at self checkout and hear not only the beep for the price being registered, but you also hear a click-click-click and another beep, the box has an active alarm. And those with an active alarm have a 50/50 or better chance of a decent hit inside. Of the update hangers I've bought a few. I've pulled a Heavy Lumber and RC blue sparkle Jackson Merrill /999 RC, an on card RC auto of Drew Millas (not a big name but an on card RC auto). Every card was in a hanger that had an active alarm. Hangers without alarms - nothing.
@@joeschmoe2011 this is crazy
@@JunkWaxHero it's crazy enough to have the appearance of being a mistake. But it's not a mistake. Never miss a chance to get a great photo or video of your product being opened by a famous person. And make sure you sent them a box with an alarm inside.
Thanks for covering this!
Big LSU fan so I’d want to keep the card but would likely end up selling. The Livvy game would definitely appeal to my teenage daughters though!
I hate the idea of getting mad at a redemption not getting a 10. Its a nice card dude. Love it and enjoy it! If you just want to make money on it, sell the actual redemption!

Thanks for the weekly video
I would totally take the Skeenes deal if I was super lucky to pull it and was a Pirates fan. If the Cubs had this I would make that deal. I have season tickets and to erase that bill and the agonizing over if something I truly enjoy is worth the annual price increase would be an incredible feeling. Plus the fun of the extras - amazing and would be worth more to me than $ for my favorite team.
Been off X just joined BlueSky this weekend. Was happy to see people like you and Paul Lesko on there.
There is nothing wrong with an 8.5. Every time someone handles a card to sign on-card condition can change. Crazy.
WOW love that Jackie report. Very, very cool.

I pull that Skenes, I'm selling it for the cash. A bird in the hand.
As for the Tyson shorts, those would be classified as "player worn" until you can prove he fought in them.
But “game” worn because they’re on the cover of the game
Thanks for comments on Bluesky. I wasn’t going to switch bc I didn’t think it would take off. But I’m thinking it will be what Twitter used to be

Thanks Ken. I think my family Monday movie night is going to need to watch Princess Bride soon. Top 10 on my list of all time movies.
Great update. I setup an account this week on Bluesky but it definitely needs to get a bit closer to Twitter/X. I am on X too but the scam followers I keep getting is just a pain. I finally switched to protected posts to stop them. I am hoping Bluesky gets a lot better because X has gotten awful with all these scam accounts.
BTW, huge respect for not using Olivia Dunne to drive clicks. Also appreciate you not click baiting your posts with silly thumbnails (like Geoff Wilson does). Those drive me crazy, enough that I stopped watching. Appreciate your channel Mike.
@@Butkusman thanks. I agree about clickbait. It was tempting to use her but it’s not for me.
As for Twitter, I agree. The constant ads, the junk followers and spam messages and everything else have made it pretty difficult to use. It’s a shame. Bluesky isn’t quite ready for primetime but maybe it’ll get there.
Expecting a 10 every time negates the entire grading industry. People should be careful what they wish for.
Exactly
@@JunkWaxHero @royals417 - concerning that JRod - it's an *on card* auto. It was sent to JRod and signed and sent back ... the on card auto should supersede any concern about condition, sheesh!
One person's opinion as I'm 60 so I have one, Evil Bay eBay is getting to be a joke and is tough to want to sell anything. Not only do they get 14% after selling an item, starting soon, everyone from what I understand will be issued a 1099 from their sales for a colander year. I can see if someone owns an actual business, like a store, and has a business license to where that is their living and lively hood issued a 1099 but individuals just selling old stuff, to which taxes have been paid on that already that's really cheesy. That's like selling junk at a yard sale and expecting the IRS to get some of that too.
@@corymcewen5943 yeah but there’s a minimum number of transactions and dollars sold, as I recall. Like 400 sales?
23:15 yikes, Clearing the Bases got dark real quick 😅 People are getting crazier by the day.

Princess Bride Mask? Think I'd rather have a Bruce Lee "Kato" mask from the Green Hornet.
I've got some (actually a lot) Adam Dunn and Sean Casey cards all numbered to their jersey number but I have no idea if they, a family member, or friend would be interested.
I was at a local card show a while ago, couple of years ago actually. There was a guy selling cards "pregraded" by him of course, all 10s, of course. Selling them for already graded PSA 10s prices. He "guaranteed" that if you sent them in to PSA, they would come back 10s. And if that wasn't bad enough, there was people buying them. I did talk 1 lady out of it. I told her to "Not be stupid" and use her noodle. But the amount of scumbags doing this is what is wrong with the hobby.
Also, I have started buying PSA/SCG 9s going back to a earlier vid of yours. It's amazing how many early 80s 9s you can get for under 30 bucks. Like, getting a 9 from that era is still super tough, but yet, no one seems to care. I'm eyeing a 83 OPeeChee Gwynn RC in a 9 for 40 bucks right now. It's hard to get the Topps version in a 7 or a 8 for that price, let alone a O Pee Chee in a 9.
That’s an awesome strategy!
Speaking of Maine autos, I’d still love to see you get Stephen Kings auto on that shining piece.
@@commentingcollector mmmm that would be nice. He’s a tough one. He lives 2 hours away from me. But he was just in my town’s movie theater last week. He’s notoriously hermit-like.

Great stuff as always, Mike! Good luck to your Celtics on Tuesday, pretty big regular season/Cup game against my Cavs. Hope it’s a doozy!
You got it! The Cavs are tough!
Interesting you mentioned Bluesky. I hadn’t really heard of it picking up any traction until earlier this week from friends. Now I’ve been slowly seeing more and more about it and just made a personal account. You mentioning making an account on there got me thinking about making a hobby account on there too. It could be fun sharing cards I have and interacting with others collections. If you make one be sure to share it and I’d give it a follow.
I’m on there! I’ll talk about it in my newsletter tomorrow.
The Pittsburgh Pirates organization giving a ''lucky'' fan 30 years of free tickets, it seems like a glutton for punishment. Considering they've pretty much been rebuilding for, the last 30 years, and haven't won a World Series in 45 years. Selling the team would be a much better reward.
Great point. “I’ll give the card over if you sell the team to someone who wants to win.”
No way I would do anything other than sell a card like the Skenes card with an auction house unless I'm a fan of the team and financially set for life. If those two boxes are checked then I would consider the tickets and other things. Not necessarily saying that card would set me up for life, but you would have to believe that it's gonna give you an extremely nice foundation. Or you can just go watch a game? lol
Agreed
I would negotiate with Goldin to do a straight sale, or to list it with them with no fees on me. OR I'd negotiate with the Pirates for a crap ton of Skenes stuff for my collection.

@@Dufex_of_Life haha yes!
0:41 Do you have a Cooper Flagg auto yet? He’s a Mainer I believe
I wish! It’s high on my list.
Have you had anyone get cards back from Topps from your experiment? I am still waiting on my end from the letters my kids and I sent for the free cards (no purchase necessary)
Nope!
People need to consider the tax consequences. Take the money. Seriously, MLB and most sports are a constant source of social media posts about which player just signed a Max contract. That's a status symbol. The card market is about exclusive contracts that went to the highest bidder. That's what sports is. But when a professional baseball team gets involved, what is the one thing they will not offer? Money. They are so much about money and try to play this thing about how the common folks don't understand this. Offering such BS for something that could bring so much cash is an insult. Every player wants the absolute most money. Every team wants the highest bidder for tv or sports cards. Everything about sports is getting the absolute most money possible. Then there is the PR which talks about everything to the people EXCEPT except cash. It's a no-fly zone. It's mocking the public.
I’d definitely be going after as much cash as I could get if I pulled a big card
Maine’s GOAT------ Cooper Flagg!!!!
@@TheBargainBoxer yep. Need one of his autographs
I live in Pittsburgh and love the Pirates and would not take this deal. I would most definitely auction the card off.
The Pirates has the ability to have a good team. We have a solid starting rotation. Some decent bats. We need a few big name free agents and ultimately new ownership. We have a horrific owner who has no business owning the team. Until he goes, we will be stuck in mediocrity or less.
Well said, Jon. Ownership is crucial.
Lol considering that last one was 1990 not 1989 just showed how little the seller knew
so how many of the babe ruth 8.5s are you gonna pick up? 😂
All of them!
Settle down with any comparisons with 90s Pedro Martinez. He was the most dominant pitcher ever for a good 5 years.
100% agree
Not particularly a fan of Ken Goldin, nor Goldin - as I've mentioned in the past - but I can't fault his tenacity. Often, he comes across as very desperate; but he raises some very valid points in his post regarding the Pirates' offer. I wouldn't take up the offer from the Pirates, and for what I'd be leaving on the table, I'd want a little more from Livvie Dunn, than to merely 'sit with' her! 😆
Regarding the Klay Thompson Captain hats "selling for $160+"... the person that made the post doesn't show one completed listing. He's fallen into the same hysteria as the news stations, when ticket resellers list their tickets for super-inflated prices, and they declare: "Rolling Stones tickets are SELLING for over $1M on Ebay!!!" (shows image of some bloke that has LISTED, but not sold, their ticket for that price).
Another great CtB, Mike. Hope you and your family had a great weekend. 👍
A couple of the hat listings I showed were auctions though and were above $160
@@JunkWaxHero: I did notice that; but in my experience, Ebay auctions have a tendency to have buyers that either don't pay up, or who change their minds (and don't pay up). This might have changed, as I haven't done an auction in over 10 years.
With this said, if you can sell a bag of air to [insert sport star]'s last match, then there's just about no limit to what a person will buy, and how much they'll pay. 😄
Congratulations on 25 straight weeks on your newsletter.
That one guy who thinks he knows what grade his cards are should start his own grading company. 🤣😆🤪 I’m sure someone will buy something he has for sale.
I like the attention the hobby is getting with all these bounties. It would be creepy for me as a 54 year old man to hang out with Livvy Dunne.
Good stuff Mike.
I hope someone takes that bounty just so we can see the video of the dude at the game with her 😂
Conspiracy nuts going crazy over that Topps Dana White opening, when that's literally a Topps Box from 2009... Are people really crazy enough to think that Topps had a box laying around for 15 years with a Jon Jones auto hit in it, that they told Fanatics about during the transition, so that Dana white could open it on a streaming platform in 2024. I mean where does it end with these people (and you for pushing it with no knowledge of the situation)
Good info!
Whatnot a scam? Shocker!! Hope they get their money back.
Whats the point of doing that to a low value psa 10 card anyways. Thats hilarious. Anyone that falls for that scam. Deserves to be scammed 😂
Olivia Dunne is a hot date, no doubt, but I'll take the millions, pass on the date. "Creepy middle-age guy" ... I resemble that remark! And so do you. 🤣
Absolutely! I’d feel like such a creeper!
I'd call her good from far and far from good knowing I had no chance.🤣 Probably play "guess her age" by looking at her elbows and then guess 5 years older. Then move on. chicks hate it. Certainly wouldn't goo goo ga ga over her. Even dope does that.
