Love the episode! It was great having Ben as a guest. I could tell he was feeling the tension of that negation 😂 Amazing collection! Robert was super cool.
Love the show! Unlike your previous partner who has no problem offering 50% for people’s family heirloom collections and bragging about it. You offering 70% as a flipper is completely fair! I’ve learned so much from this series that has been so helpful as I search and negotiate my personal Chasing Cardboard adventures 👍❤️
How do you negotiate for your time? Most of the collections you buy need to be sorted, organized, deciding what will be graded and what will be listed raw, where to sell them, the weight time between sending and receiving the graded cards, then listing or meet someone to sell the cards to. If you have a partner, who gets which cards or what percentage of the sales? Your also taking the risk of tying up your money in the meantime. It's not surprise collections get so big. It's easy to buy and hard to sell, especially the longer you wait. You both do an excellent job working these deals.
It's one thing to charge a flat commission % if you're selling someone else's cards, but when you're paying cash for the whole collection and assuming all the risk I don't see how you could have paid any more than 70%. I feel like you were more than fair. Love the channel and love the business aspect of it.
Great series of videos from Abilene. I pass through there alot this time of year during deer season. I will have to stop at that shop in Abilene next time. Guns and cards under the same roof.......IT CANT GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT!!!! Ben did a great job!! Its good to see the collector point of view on these deals from him and the buisness side of the deal from you. Yall make a great team!
This is the best collection I've seen on Chasing Cardboard...easy decision to buy but I'd be tempted to put too much in PC!!! I wound wind up living in an outbuilding at Moynihan's cleaning up after the animals for room and board.
Great collector! Love how he said “I don’t want this to be my God.” God and Family. This collector rocks and you all are awesome. Who walks into your house and is able to bless you with tens of thousands of dollars for your family. Awesome episode as always. Give US MORE content!!!
First time here. Great watch. If the cards shown are indicative of what else was in that collection, $80,000 was absolutely an undervalue. $58,750 was a steal. Nice.
@@CHASINGCARDBOARDAre the sellers aware by selling to you that they automatically forfeit 30% of the market value of their collections before negotiations start. I guess the sellers need money quick are lazy or both. Their loss your gain. 🥂
Great episode highlighting some awesome cards. Great negotiation. And you hung out with Ben for a whole day. Now I know where some of the ones I bid on came from.
I have a room dedicated to Don Mattingly I have over 100,000 baseball cards of just him super collector love your show can't wait for new episodes keep up the great work
We need a follow up on this video. Did you and Ben come to an agreement on the cards he wanted? How does that affect the margins for the rest of the collection?
I understand it takes time to process, grade, or sale cards. However , i do believe they made out great and i would have stood firm at 65,000 but I'm on the outside looking in .
I would have EASILY paid $60k for all of that. From what I could see... a lot of big names, not too much junk. I'm sure many of those raw cards will be sent in to PSA, which... if evalualuated properly... will increase their value. The grind of selling on eBay can be a pain, so I'll often send hundreds of cards at a time to a consignment service I use. They do all the work... pictures, listing & shipping... and I still clear 85%-89% depending on the selling price.
If I had one complaint about the show it would be I want more shots of the cards. Good shots, single shots, so we can see it. Hearing about it is fine, but quick half shots as you shuffle through isn't enough. We want to see the cards.
I would sell your guy what he wants. Then take the bulk of it to a strong card show… Dallas and not pay eBay fees. Maybe it would balance out fee’s to travel expenses. But that’s a strong collection that would move fast…
I love that dominique wilkins at 11:35 he was my fav player growing up. Mainly cuz everyone elses was Jordan and i just wanted to collect someone different
Question about PSA up charges. Does PSA establish value on eBay comps alone? What if an item is valuable but basically has no comps, does PSA still guesstimate values?
New subscriber, I have to say this was very fun to watch. Im new at collecting cards. Definitely will be watching more of your content. Thank you for sharing. By the way, whoever is editing your videos, great job. 👏🫡
These comments make me laugh. How do you know this was worth 100k? Were you in the room with them? Did you just calculate all of the values? They have multiple people in the room, both the buyer and seller agreed on values. Why is it you think you have some additional insight they don't have?
love this channel; all time fav! but I just wish the titles of the videos weren't so telling on the negotiations.....jus takes away from the excitement.no pro but on marketing/advertising but I do feel like there should be less details in the titles
Enjoyed the episode as usual. Would like to see more about how Ty calculates the retail value. The show and the comments have focused on what percent of retail is fair or smart. But the estimated retail value is way more important to what the deal price ended up being. Whether he pays 68% or 71% isn’t that big a deal. But the $20k difference between $80k and $100k is huge no matter what the percentage is.
Thanks for watching! Retail value is calculated by last comps sold. But for comps that are much older, you have to factor in the “why are people not buying this card anymore?” Take Wander Franco as an example. Would you pay a comp value for a card of his if the last sold comp was a year old?
I wasn’t asking about what goes into estimating retail value of a particular card, rather how you estimate retail value for a collection as a whole in just a few hours. It seems from most episodes that you don’t lay eyes on every card. And even if you did, it would seem a monumental amount of work to look up each one. So there has to be a significant level of extrapolation from the cards you do see and look up to the estimated retail value of the entire collection. I’m just curious about your process for that as most episodes don’t go into detail about it, but it seems to be the key to the offers you make. Also, you’re having in depth conversations with the sellers about how they collect, etc. I’d have a difficult time carrying on the conversation and calculating value simultaneously, with confidence that I was making a good estimate of value.
I understand margins/profits but the market has changed this past year. Ppl are paying 90%. Cards like these will sell extremely quick and not at a discount. Also. That wax is prob worth a lot more then 3-4k
Thumbs up 448 I’m a numbers that is a great number really enjoying your content. Chipping away at you inventory when I can purchase some nuggets when I can.
Ty I been watching you since episode 1 and love this video as I have the others as this guy had plenty of liquid now ??? When buying say on eBay would you say when it comes to buying for investment purposes to try and stay at 70% of current market sales sold prices and what price percentage would be fair to start offers at for investing anyways thanks for your time support in the hobby and your great content
i buyout large collections all the time and pay around 33 percent on average... if you arent setup like these guys and know how to breakdown and sell a collection quickly you will lose big time buying anywhere near 70 percent... unless its straight up easily sellable $500 plus cards.. remember 90 percent of cards are going down in price the minute you buy them..
Thanks for your input but I was asking about a more reasonable starting offer like 55% to 60% of current market value for first offers then go up from there and stay within the 70 to 75% margin for investment purposes but again I appreciate your reply
I have always enjoyed your videos. This deal seemed way offline in my opinion. The value was well well over 80k. You gave him 73% of your 80k evaluation however this lot was well over 80k. My guess is you are already aware of this. My opinion is you probably paid him around 50% of the value of his cards. This will be a very profitable purchase for you. He agreed to the price however this time I feel like the seller got a very bad deal. Of course, he gets more selling it on Ebay but that takes tons of time and man hours, and it has fees as well. He must have wanted to be featured in a video because I cannot imagine why he would sell that collection for 58k. I understand you have fuel and other cost however this was a cherry lot that was damn near liquid. Doing this for over 30 years I cannot figure this deal out. Something seems off to me. I enjoy your videos. You are down to earth. I just feel like the used car salesman was getting a bad deal.
You are overthinking this one... the value was definitely not over $80k. Much of this was priced out before coming... we paid a VERY HEALTHY price and in hindsight would have stuck to our guns on 55k.
