Nov 11, 2024 Mixed Species Flying Fox Cam: Variable Bats Mating

Lubee Bat Conservancy currently has a breeding program with the Variable Bats. This video shows a male and female Variable Bat mating. Another male Variable Bat appears in the video too. Lubee will remove the male Variables in February 2025 and begin ultrasounds with the female Variables to determine pregnancies, with pups expected in Spring 2025. Thank you to Lubee Bat Conservancy and explore.org for allowing us to witness this process, and to the Cam Op for focussing on this event today, which is a little chaotic to watch. The male supports both himself and the female during mating while hanging upside down, so its a good thing that these bats have that rachet type locking of the tendons in their feet to firmly grip to the roof of the pen.
