Thanks for this review. A pleasent surprise. I was planning on getting this game for vita anyway (physical always). I will wait for the EU version. (hopeing it will be physical 2. Otherwise ill buy the US version)
I recently bought this game used from GameStop and I have come to the conclusion that even though I like RPG's and also tactical RPG's, this game is not for me at all. My biggest issues with it come from so much text, reading from events which is the meat of the game. The gameplay and battles are decent but sub par for me. Everyone among the first 9 characters you use except for one of them has a base move of 3 with summon(s) magic typically having a range or 2 or 3. This is mirror reflected by enemies. Honestly, I started just letting the auto-battle take over. The main character has that 90's anime teenage boy voice that is grating and gets on my nerves. Hasaha is alright, Kyle too... The customization or rather the level up and skill points system is fairly diverse with an alchemy style system to improve a character's weapons or summons. I took the level up / skill points system as the best part of the game, too bad the gameplay feels mediocre to me. I'm returning this game and exchanging it for something else like Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance, an actual great game to play. In my opinion, a much better game than Summon Night 6 would be *Cross Edge (PS3),* it shares many universe characters including *Morrigan, Etna, Marie, Prinny* and other games characters ending up in this other world together and the battle and synthesis system is far better and more enjoyable to play even with new game+ options if I recall. I'd recommend Cross Edge over Summon Night 6, and I'd recommend Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance far above Cross Edge. No offense to Summon Night 6 or if others feel I'm being too harsh with it, but it really doesn't feel good playing for me.
This has been one of my most anticipated games this year, and it looks like all I could have wanted and then some. I'm glad you reviewed it! Also, Summon Night 5 is available in English as a digital game for PSP
Yep! I've got a physical PSP copy sitting on my shelf! I was actually hoping to play through it first, but when I was asked to review SN6, I had to jump on it! :)
SuperDerek RPGs Awesome! XD Of course, I would be very interested in your take on that title, and possibly the Sword craft games as well, if you'd be interested in them :D
Hmm... really interesting. I never was a big SRPG fan, but i think the mix between visual novel and SRPG seems to do the trick for me. Just few months ago I've played Utawarerumono Mask of Deception/Truth and to my surprise I count them among the best games I've ever played now. Perhaps I'll give this one a chance as well. Never liked SRPGs because i always feel like spending more time in menues than actually in the story, but the VN/SRPG format is fantastic.
As someone who preordered the fancy collector's edition of this game (PS4 version) I'm glad to hear that it's worth playing from a source I trust. I've recently cut down on my TH-cam viewing in order to have more time to actually play games so I might be late to catch some of your videos (I watched the Koudelka review just before this one) but I haven't unsubbed and will definitely check back regularly.
I saw a guy on a Shadow Hearts community on PSN mention that you did a Koudelka review so that's mainly the reason I checked back but this was a great and unexpected bonus :) This is a great time for me to cut back on TH-cam. My backlog has literally been stacking up around me, my work finally slowed down and we just got our first day of snow. Got Mario Odyssey on the Switch with Xenoblade Chronicles 2 on the way and a whole lot of RPGs and other good stuff on the PS4. I'm proud to be one of your longest-watching viewers and will remain one unless you say something bad about Tokyo Mirage Sessions :P
@@eelboy9017 i was looking down the comments and saw someone mentioned the DS game. Maybe it was that one who brought it down? I enjoyed how you could do multiple play through since you pick what summon you want and they act differently so they all added something different to the story.
Seems a bit light on combat, and a bit heavy on visual novel style. For those who enjoy that, I'm sure they'll be in for a treat! The graphics are certainly no slouch. I love how newer Japanese style RPGs basically look like a real anime nowadays. Nice look at this, and it's awesome that Vic Ireland reached out!
Nice Review Derek! I'm actually picking this one up and was curious on the overall gameplay mechanics with this one! looks like a fun game! never did get to play the other games in the series but heard nothing but good about the games! Subbed as well! recognized you from Woods videos and your into the same games as me! cheers!
How long are the visual novel parts? Theres another Playstation series called Utawarerumono, theres hours of visual novel segments before a small fight. I want this game, but I dont want my PSV to die when I had watched 3hrs of VN, and only played 1 or 2 fights
What's interesting is that they actually have (some of) the voice actors from Lunar. As in, the original Lunar for the Saturn and the Playstation here.
I have played every single summon night game to date and I can confim there is not such a thing as a timeline or a Story betwen games kinda like final fantasy. This is the first time that I heard the voices of some of my favorite characters in english and is quite cringy the american actors have this very wierd delivery in their lines and some of the jokes were cut since they didn't make sence in english. I really preffer playing my jrpgs in japanese after all that is the whole reason why I learn japanese in the first place. With that been said I also think that is amazing that more summon night games are making their way to america and europe, this is a very fun and amazing series and maybe more people can join the fandom and make the game series grow. (I also though that about 7th dragon even though it wast not as popular as I hope) Anyway Super Derek, sir, dude, this is a very good video and you made justice to a very good entry in an amazing series. You can have my like and subscription!!
Yeah, they've got people from ancient history chumming around with baristas from the technological future, male heroes from past games meeting with their female counterparts from across dimensions, it is pretty rad! I'm pretty sure that the male/female counterpart thing is due to the fact that you can pick your character's sex at the beginning of some games. :)
Congrats on the first day-one review! Been anticipating this for a while, but the talk of strategy games and Gaijinworks / Working Designs reminds me I still have to play and beat Arc the Lad 2+3 from the ps1 set. Any consideration for tackling that trilogy for the show?
Well, I just bought it at PRGE this year with the intention of using them to satisfy my Tactical RPG cravings. Maybe I'll do Xenogears first, then the Arc The Lad Collection. :)
SuperDerek RPGs Xenogears is also fantastic! I've only played it once by borrowing it, though funnily enough finally got my own copy at PRGE this year. Definitely worth the play through
SuperDerek RPGs Yeah, I got to check it out on the last day and we did run into each other, though only very briefly cause I didn't know how much time I had to check out the place. The name's Matt, if that helps connect real me to online me.
@@SuperDerek Thanks. I just binged all of them! Awesome work! Do you know of any other games with Suikoden II army battle style gameplay as it's main stay for gameplay? I feel like Advance Wars is similar, but looking for others.
Hey man thanks for the review, im thinking of buying the vita version and not the ps4 version just because of it is on the go, is there any glitches/frame rate drop so far for the vita version?
On one hand, because this is a Tactical-RPG and its VN nature of storytelling, I want to play it on my Vita. But on the other hand, I also want to experience the graphical upgrades and smooth framerate on the PS4. Ahhh decisions... /O\
i loved the gba games, the one DS was lame and i always wanted to play the main entries... but not like this, crossovers are for fans, how many fans this games have?, few, i dont see the point, i guess is better than nothing, but if this series is shut down again because of "bad sales" then we have a problem... i hope they can localize the older entries to build up the fan base at least
It feels like he’s trying to say the game is bad without saying the game is bad. Anyone else think so? I’m trying to learn how to best review a game and I wanna see if I got this right.
The game was made with Japanese audiences in mind, who by in large don’t own or use PCs. Porting the game to PC for Western audiences would cost a lot more than just a localization. That’s my guess.
I'm sorry you feel that way. I was very cognizant of that possibility when making the review, which is why I stated clearly that the game was given to me for the review. With a channel that barely makes enough ad revenue to cover the interest I'm paying on equipment for the show, being handed a game with no strings attached from Gaijinworks was not only a humbling experience for this little TH-camr, but also a little bit of a relief. For what it's worth though, I did point out some of the game's rough points. The VO is very hit and miss, and it's hard to get excited about a crossover special having practically no context for it. But overall the game was fun, and got me interested in the Summon Night series. Also, the visual novel side of the game isn't really my jam, but on the bright side you can pretty much skip all of it.
SuperDerek RPGs Just to clarify, Im not dissing the quality of this video or your efforts. Its just when I hear sponsored or 'given' I get very skeptical but, this isn't your fault in anyway. I have heard of the bad voice acting in SN6 and I agree. Their intonations don't really fit the situation. Sounds awkward. But to each their own. Have fun picking up the franchise if u do so.
SuperDerek RPGs It's only a hunch due to them releasing the games with the correct number and releasing a game with character from a previous entries. Sorry if I got your hopes up. :-(
I understand, it's not really my cup-of-tea either. It's definitely one of those cases where you either love it or hate it. But for me to criticize the game for having it would be like criticizing a game for having turn-based combat, you know? Cheers. :)
Congrats on getting industry attention! Good luck moving forward!
Thanks! I honestly couldn't be happier that Gaijinworks was my first. :)
Woah two SuperDerek reviews within the span of a few days! I must be dreaming!
I'll just go ahead and get another pair ready in preparation

Gotu Games physical ftw
Congrats on the day 1 review man. I've been interested in giving this game a shot and after watching your review, I'll definitely pick it up 👍.
Good review, sold it for me. Subbed to your channel.
Thanks ThisisStil, hope you have a good time with it! :)
Excellent review SuperDerek, thanks! Smashin' Ben here, and a fellow gamer tuber. I'll be adding this one to my JRPG collection after your video.
Wish more devs would send you review copy like that. You're always fair and its obvious how much you know about your favorite gaming genre ! 🐱

So pumped for this game I started with the summon night gba stories I’m suprised how different the series are.

go vita, its made for this type of game, as was the psp, plus you get to support the vita which it desperately needs.
It is worth to play and good with the story line?
Hey derek how about a blue dragon review .. that box looks pretty nice there lol

Your game collection is missing the Summon Night 5 Gaijinworks released in 2015.
Nope, I've got a physical copy on my shelf, along with the soundtrack. I plan to give it a shot before too long! :)
I thought this game would never come out. Seems like Working Designs infamousy of delaying a game until the apocalypse is still in effect
It can be frustrating waiting for localizations, but the wait is usually worth it. :)

Yeah, from what I understand. PS4 version runs sliiightly faster, and at a higher resolution, but otherwise they're exactly the same.
Huh, would have never heard of this series if not for this review. Seems like an interesting concept, but not a game for me I think.
This should come to switch, only Nintendo gamers know how to respect jrpgs
This will be one of the first games I get when I buy a PS4 Pro. 😍
I preferred the old hack and slash SNs. ;-;
wtf is that ? it's not summon nigth anymore, the 3 first game were so different... now its just a low budget Fire Emblem
Swordcraft is more better
Would love this on the switch
Me too! Also, I'd love to own a switch for that matter. :)
i am surprised that someone is reviewing summon night game.
I'll probably review Summon Night 5 before long, I'm honestly surprised we didn't get earlier entries besides Swordcraft Story.
i wish i could play Summon Night 1 ,2 and 3 in english translation. it seems like the earlier entries hav more text..
I want summon night 3 and 4 English
is this game dual audio ? (EN and JP voices)
If it's not, then I can save some money, 'cause I ain't buying a dubbed-only game.
Xenogears!
Trust me, it's coming, but maybe not until December or so. Sorry for the wait! :)
