The story for the mother series is what drew me to it, I stayed for the humor and gameplay. Love the mother series
This is arguably my favorite MOTHER game. If you play, it I recommend the Tomato translation on NES. It's Tomato's but adapted to NES and it feels better.

Yeah, but the 25th anniversary edition (which isn't that good, don't play lol) revised the Tomato translation for NES. Someone isolated the script and got rid of the other changes. It just feels more natural to me
For anyone who wants to just play the game, then I highly recommend getting the english patched GBA version of Mother 1+2. It's the translation that's really closest to the original Japanese version (like no censors) & has the easy ring that lowers the encounter rate with also boosting the amount of EXP gained for less grinding.

I have just beaten it up, like 2 hours ago. I played respectively, Mother 2, Mother 3 and Mother, within 2 months (covid time). Btw, had no idea about pressing start button to reset random encounters! Had a rough time with tihs one honestly but I can tell why Mother 3 on GBA is so good, although Mother's (NES) flaws (don't get me wrong, it has indeed MANY good things this game) , it also leaded the way to a masterpiece game. But still, I encourage every one to play 3 of them, it's really satisfactory to beat them all.
This is one of my favorite games. I've played it enough times and got past the limitations, and I found it to be incredibly fun. I prefer playing the NES version (since I'm not too fond of the GBA translation, props to Tomato for doing a slick job though!), but once the M1+2 Translation is fully completed I'll give both games on the cart another run.
Mt. Itoi's still a pain, though. No two ways about that.
Earthbound "Zero" (name given to the prototype) and the Virtual Console versions are actually identical, both speeds up everything. This was changed only in the GBA version
The game's very charming but it's very difficult to play today. Only play if you dont mind being grind into paste 😅
Earthbound is pretty much the same concept but improved significantly
the randomness of your stat boosts during level up was also strange. I remembering cheesing it with an emulator and continuing to reload. Sometimes you get 14hp, sometimes you get 1hp.
Difficult to play today? It's nothing compared to Phantasy Star II.
@@Walczyk The sequel was the same with the semi-random stat boosts. So were some other J-RPGs, ones that I can think of off the top of my head are Phantasy Star II and Metal Max 2.

I LOVED Earthbound but Earthbound Beginnings was harder to get into and I never finished it. I still bought it hoping sales of the game would get Mother 3 over here but alas. Beginnings still has a very cool vibe for its time and great music tho.
The Mother 3 fan translation is very good
That's the only reason I bought it, I never played it though. Eventually caved and added the Mother 3 fan translation to my modded 3DS
Play the Mother 1+2 Fan Translation and use the Easy Ring, it's way better than the EB0.

I have beaten this game with the easy patch, but I used a map for most of the complicated dungeons as well as the speed up button on the emulator. I would definitely recommend playing it this way with help from the internet. Greatest nes story there is
I feel like Mother & Mother 2 are like Evil Dead & Evil Dead 2, in that the sequel is basically a better remake of the original.
I never understood this. Evil Dead 2 is clearly a continuation and sequel of Evil Dead. It rehashes the first one within the first 10 Minutes and picks up exactly at where we left the first movie.
Yeah the summary of the first film was reshot and dumped down (for licensing reasons) (you don't see the the friends and so on.)
But it doesn't contradict the first movie.
Same goes for Army of Darkness. Here a reshots as well. So if you watch all in order there are some minor incontinuetys, but overall it's one Trilogy and one Story.
Even Raimi said so. And you can see it clearly in Ash VS. Evil Dead, where are some hints to Evil Dead 1 and even one character reappears.
And I think it's so obvious, but everyone talks about Evil Dead 2 as a Remake. Or Soft Reboot.
But I get what you mean, about Mother 1 and 2.
I played Zero a few years ago and enjoyed it a lot, but I wouldn't have if I hadn't used a walkthrough that I found online. I could tell that it would have been confusing and infuriating without it.
This game's my favorite out of the series...
I don't know what that says about me. I guess I like grindy games.
Mother 3 made me cry and all, but Mother 2 kinda rubbed me the wrong way. It was too easy compared to Mother 1, recycled most of the first game's OST, and lacked a run button. Also, while it did add an extra 4 slots for storage, equipping items was changed so it still stays in the bag while equipped! So you *still* only have 12 slots like Mother 1 if you've got a full set of equipment on!
I did appreciate the new creatures and monsters that were introduced though like Mr. Saturn, Master Belch, and Porky.
I'd say my favorites go like this from least to most:
3. Mother 2
2. Mother 3
1. Mother 1
It'd be nice to see Mother 1 get an official remake at least, since it needs a new coat of paint the most.
Nice video, I remember playing the prototype of this game on a PSP NES Emulator back in 2009, Also, my favorite song from the Mother series, Pollyanna (I believe in you), is originally from this game.

Despite the flaws, I still really really loved this game. Still probably third place to Mother 2 and 3. But that’s a sign of how strong the series is, because the Mother series is a masterpiece, IMO.
I'm playing this game and I'm really loving it. All the limitations didn't really bother me too much. I just play it for an hour or so at a time. It didn't feel too grindy to me but I also play old school RuneScape so that might have something to do with it lol. Anyway I imagine this game was amazing when it came out. It has a magical feeling to it. Imagine discovering all the secrets for yourself without the internet. The would've took forever and you still probably wouldn't get it all. If you do decide to play it, play it blind and only look stuff up if you've been absolutely stuck for some time.
I am an total EarthBound nut. And I really, really tried and wanted to like Mother 1. But the grinding is truly borderline insane and made me uncounsciously forget about it. Even bought me a nice repro that I eventually sold. Playing it as far as I could get really made a appreciate even more the awesomeness that is Earthbound on the SNES.
For a lot of RPGs you just have to embrace the grind. I remember one time my girlfriend was playing FFXIII and I went and took a nap. I crashed out hard and woke up four and a half hours later. Come downstairs and she is literally in the exact same area farming for some item. I knew she was a keeper then haha. Not everyone has the patience for deep grinding. I think of it as a meditative act almost. It's all in your mindset
the Mother 25th anniversary Rom hack so far is the way to go. It gets the Dragon Quest 1 & 2 SFC treatment. Im 3/4 through playing on Twitch, and should continue after this weekend!

Mother is only a game I’d recommend if you really like the other games in the series. It sadly has a crazy amount of grinding, which was common for a lot of NES RPGs. But I would never say it’s bad. It just didn’t age very well.
I really liked the it. Perhaps there were too many occasions where I felt like I had to return to Magicant (to heal and make room for items), and getting back to where you were can be a very long process, especially if you don't remember the exact way. Knowing what the items and different versions of the PSI attacks do is also a learning process, but there's a charm to things not being explained. As for the grinding, I thought it was within the appropriate range. I made myself a few levels too powerful because I was expecting the end to be way harder, but oh well.
This makes me appreciate where Mother 3 on GBA came from. Thanks for the vid

I’m glad I tried it out for a while on Wii U, but the sequel on SNES is definitely way better. I wish Itoi would do another game-doesn’t have to be a Mother game, but the man is so talented he should give it a try.
I loved every Mother game, but Earthbound is hands down the best.

Also btw, the party members in Earthbound also started in Level 1
But every character is given ample time to level up before or just after joining the party. You don't need to grind in EB. In EBB, if you want your party members to be at a serviceable level, you need to go mess around in Magicant and grind for a few hours.
If you liked Mother 1, there's a remake project to put Mother 1 in Earthbound's engine. So a snes remake basically.
There's a group out there that has made hard copies of this the way it 'would've been' had it actually came out for the NES. There was a limited number of copies made and I don't know if they'll make another batch at anytime.

I have a repro of this with a patch, not the easy patch, but one that changes, balances things out. But not enough to keep it being tough. My first playthrough was kinda nice as result ^-^
I find the easy patch too easy. It lowers the encounter rate and just doubles the xp and money earned. I think it swings the balance to far in the other direction. I recommend downloading the Earthbound Zero 25th anniversary patch which changes a bunch of things to make it ideal for playing today. It lowers the encounter rate, but only gives you slightly more xp. It also makes some of the dungeons and the overworld easier to navigate. The most noticeable change is that almost all of the sprites have been redrawn. It's also the only way to play the NES version of the game with the translation by Tomato.

It was based on a movie of the same name, and Capcom tried to remake it but since the name is owned by some other company, it became Resident Evil.

Even as an EarthBound fan, I tell people to play the latter two games first because EB Beginnings is something of an acquired taste. But yes, the story is nothing short of fantastic!
It kind of reminds me of the yellow pokemon for GB. With the way your new characters start at one and eventually evolve hopefully into something useful . Even the layout kind of looks like it.
Pokemon games prior to the 3DS are grid-based and in Mother games you can move diagonally.

I love this game and I love the four NES Dragon Quest games. I just find their old school quirkiness endearing.
I really like FFi, majorly because of nostalgic reasons, and how many times I beat it when I was young (and after played FFVI.. go figure). But I don't know if I can play them anymore.
Its definitely from another era and yeah, the inventory issue is a big one... Honestly though, I don't mind that many random encounters. I have finished Breath of Fire 1&2 and frankly, every step was encounter in certain areas. I'd still recommend this game somewhat.
I warp to Magicant constantly it was very useful
I just actually beat ebz last month. I liked it but it took forever to beat, so much grinding . The random battles are off the charts
Okay, the Lvl1 new party members happens in EarthBound also. Had to f@$!ing grind for Paula to get to just a few levels below Ness cuz Ness was also still leveling up.
I prefer this over Earthbound. It's hard to explain, but I think everything in Earthbound is a little "amplified" in this. For example, this game is weirder, and the humor is even better (like finding Loid inside a trash can, and later finding his father also in a trash can) The brutal difficulty and limitations of the time makes this game much less accessible, but those who endure through will find one of the most strange and unique games ever made.
I prefer this one over Mother 2 as well.
It rubs me the wrong way when people dumb it down to, 'Mother 2 is just a remake of this title.' Mother 2 was just too easy, and recycled a lot of Mother 1's OST.
I'm just impressed with how good this game is for the NES.

I always liked the eerie atmosphere this game has over Earthbound and Mother 3 more. The most common battle theme, the plot and some of the enemy designs really helped with that. I think this game makes Gyigue more interesting than the tired "he's pure evil with no form" interpretation people seem to have based on playing only Earthbound. What makes Mother antagonists interesting is that when it comes down to it even if they're presented as bad from the start they always end up becoming victims of their circunstances too.

I’d play Earthbound Mother 2 (the one with Ness) it’s awesome! Once you beat that, try Mother 3 (with Lucas). I may have to play the rom/emulator and the English translation first however.

As a huge fan of Earthbound, I bought a copy of Earthbound Zero from Timewalk Games a number of years ago (anyone remember Timewalk? That could be an episode for you, Drunk). Because I had a hard copy, I couldn't apply the Easy Patch, so I really had to earn finishing this one.
It does get better, but the beginning stage felt like playing an inferior copy of Earthbound. VERY similar setting and story beats for the first bit, triggering all sorts of deja vu.
It was worth playing, but I probably wouldn't ever play it again - I'll just play Earthbound.
I love this game.
I basically just beat earthbound beginnings just for the gamer credit and ended up getting hooked to the series. It’s honestly one of my favorite series of all time
I love games with good storytelling. It becomes a lot more memorable and honestly I think I could really enjoy the Mother series. The only problem is, I hate the battle system. After dying on my first encounter in Earthbound after reaching the streets, I didn't wanna touch the game again. I always play with cheat codes in RPGs because I don't wanna spend 150 hours playing the game and progress through the story slowly. I constantly want to know what will happen next in my path. This is especially because battles always get repetitive at some point. These RPGs do a bad job at keeping the battle system fun and refreshing in my opinion.
I enjoyed earthbound a lot! Mother is a cool looking game but after trekking through Breath of fire 1 I'm moving towards games like secret of mana and Final fantasy!
Got some protips for you all as well as vince94. When you start up the game grab as many Orange Juices from your siblings for health before any outside battles. When you get to outside battles, just like Pokémon on red blue and yellow your mom is there to heal you. Lastly, save when you have accomplished battles on the phone at your house to have progression. Next thing you know, you will be ahead of the game!
To new, aspiring EarthBound/Mother fans: start with EarthBound. If you like it, then go back and give EarthBound Beginnings a whirl. Both of these games aren't everyone's cup of tea, but regardless of if you like Beginnings (or even EarthBound) then play Mother 3. From what I can tell, even the people who had an agonizing time with the first two love Mother 3 to pieces. Just trust me on this one.
I think it is, but only if you can find a working ROM. I've had several translated ROMs that will stop working as you're going on stage to try and impress the gang leader character.
Had a Nes in the UK< so never saw this. I think the easy patch sounds for me.
it's always amazing to me when games that are technically considered "cult classics"... like, Ness is easily one of the most recognizable characters of all time now!
Not really. If you put Ness in front of your average person they wouldn't know who he was or where from.

Played it with the easy ring and a few checks online about the melodies( I really didn't know how to get to Laura) absolutely had a blast. Fun dialog and gags, Interesting places and goofy aah enemies. I remember there was a female robot and her ability was literally grinning at my party to boost her offence. Also you can go to jail for underage drinking xd
Earthbound made everything better and yet kept the painfully small inventory. Come Itoi, just give me my bag of holding.
I found the game a charming grind. An acquired taste, but I’d hardly regard it as the raging dumpster fire that so many others do. I will say though, that the encounter rate isn’t as bad as a lot of people say...most of the time. There’s a good chance that you can run into enemies every three steps, but there’s an equal chance that you won’t run into enemies for a solid two minutes.
Interesting that there is very little graphical difference between Mother 1 & 2 despite they are both on different generations of consoles.

Only worth playing for fans of Mother 2 (Earthbound) to see the origins of the first game, including the 8-bit version of the music. But it might be better with a patch (I've only played the original EB Zero).
Great example of a game that is better with a hack to make it less grind heavy and emulated for save states. Admittingly, I would really not like playing this on original hardware, but it is a ton of fun on my phone.

I really enjoyed this game. It is hard and the inventory is a pain, but I really think this game is a gem. It is cutesy and funny until the end where it is just creepy and terrifying. Mother 2 was better, but Mother is one of the best games on the NES in my opinion.
I love old rpg's, but I could not bring myself to play through the original Final Fantasy. It was just so clunky and it didn't age that well. Mother is also clunky, but to me it is just a more enjoyable experience and it aged a little bit better.
No lets just pray we get mother 3 soon. I would love the trilogy on the switch. That would be awesome!
Definitely agree. FF is a broken mess, even for an NES game. Only the 3rd game is good. Mother (and the DQ series) are both far superior in every way. It's not nearly as frustrating, to be honest.
The original Mother is rough, Mother 25th Anniversary Edition is highly recommended. More balanced and reworked to fit the original character models better.
Fun fact:
The only party member you have to get is Lloyd, which means you can beat the game with him and no other members. I never played this game but that is a serious oversight, and apparently he is not very usefull from what I have heard.
You really have to go out of your way to only have Lloyd join Ninten.
He's pretty useful in the early game at least if you give him a boomerang right away.
Late game Lloyd pretty much sums up to stocking up on Super Bombs for one shotting all enemies on screen.
