Ahhhh, Ingrid, what a tragedy! But full marks to Liz McColgan.
You can't lay it more on the line than running from the front flat out. ( Something I would have liked to see Bedford do in the international majors) Only a few ever had the balls - McColgan, Radcliffe, Zatopek, Foster, Herb Elliott, Budd, Prefontaine, Rudisha........ Win or lose one never forgets those great athletes who had HEART!
Bedford did go for it in Munich...60 sec first lap and stayed at the front over a large part of the race. He also took it on in CWG at Christchurch in 1974. I would also add Yvonne Murray to your list of brave athletes who had plenty of heart. Yvonne took the race by the scruff of the neck here at Seoul in 1988 from 550m out, only being beaten by two Eastern Bloc athletes, the winner being banned for use of PEDs in 1993! Certainly a Gold Medal performance by Yvonne.

The top three would have been tested. However, any positive results would probably have been binned, especially after the men's 100m outcome and the adverse publicity!!
If this had been a clean Olympics, GB would have had three gold medalists in the women's middle distance events: Liz here; Yvonne in the 3,000m and Chrissie Cahil in the 1,500m.

No African athletes were entered!
Ethiopia didn't participate. Kenya brought 4 women, none for this distance.
Please note that this final was run in 1988. There were no African runners in the 1987 WC final of women's 10,000 metres, either. However, since the 1991 WC 10,000 metres final for women, there have ALWAYS been also African female runners in this distance run's finals.
Came to see Liz since her daughter Eilish did one better and got gold at the same event. Edit...2022 Commonwealth Games. The russian was most likely doped to the gills. Doping was really, really, common by the east block at that time. I just looked at a pic of olga and her face screams of dope. It is very likely that Liz was robbed of gold. Wiki says that Yelena is ukrainian but this was before the wall came down so she is russian.
