Yeah, off course it's heavy. Quorthon (guitar, vocals, main songwriter) is one of the best songwriters ever in metal, not like some this today's overrated people in music. And on most of the albums he was alone, so he played every instrument, guitars, drums, bass, because it was hard to find bandmates so he decided to do everything by himself and he also recorded, mixed, produce everything with his father. So he was just normal guy from Sweden who loved music and didn't want any fame or something like that, he just wanted to be a musician since he was a little boy. I mean he with other bands pioneered two metal genres (black metal and viking metal), there isn't to many people who can say that.

@@outis439-A First album had, for second and third albums I'm not sure. Many people to this very day are not sure if he was the only guy on some albums or he wasn't? Quorthon was a mysterious guy and he didn't give too much information about himself and the band, he just wasn't interested in fame, popularity or in selling many albums as possible, he just wanted to make music and he fuckin did, created two metal genres! He started to give some information about the band in middle 90's towards his death in 2004. If you are interested, you can check some radio interviews on youtube, where he talks about himself and the band.

I think you’re trying to say that most Black Metal is more focused on treble and less on bass which plays a factor on how “heavy” a song would sound.

    • @pietrayday9915
      @pietrayday9915 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

I'd go as far as suggesting that the "heaviness" of heavy metal is a matter of the contrasts, including those contrasts between the lower-end and the treble... to me, the trebly black metal and the more bass-heavy down-tuned brutal death-metal, as well as the non-stop high-speed metal and the plodding pace of funeral/ambient/shoegaze metal alike lose out on much of the contrast that would lend it a heavier sound.
For this song, you've got those ethereal acoustic strings and keyboards contrasting with those beautiful, booming drums and the buzzing guitars, while the mid-paced tempo provides enough room for the faster bits (especially in the other songs on the album), and the slower, more atmospheric parts to open up some contrast, and gives those wonderful, broad riffs room to breathe and travel. Even Quorthon's voice also has a lot of great texture to it, lending it a little more variety than usual for the more monotonous shrieked vocals of black metal (or the low bass belch of brutal death vocals!) alone have.

    Conspiracy of peace
    Only the sound
    Of the cold northern breeze
    Twinsun sink fading
    Behind the black lake
    Asleep is the mountains
    Yet the night is awake
    Strange is the night
    Now black stars rise
    And many moons circle
    Through silent the night
    Along the black mountainside scattered
By the campfires awaiting the dawn
Two times a hundred men in battles
Tried by the steel in the arrow, axe and the sword
By battle worn hunger torn awaitening
For the sun to break through the cold haze
And for the banners of Ebal to appear
On the hill in the sun's first warm rays
The elder among the men looked deep into
The fire and spoke loud with pride
Tomorrow is a fine day to die
Now the morning advance from far east
Now the sun breaks through dust clouds and haze
Now a forest of spears appears on the hill
And steel shines bright in the sun's first rays

This is song is not about Jihad, it's about Oskoreia. Oskoreia typically involve a ghostly or supernatural group of hunters passing in wild pursuit. The hunters may be either elves or fairies or the dead, and the leader of the hunt is often a named figure associated with Oden. Seeing the Oskoreia was thought to presage some catastrophe such as war or plague, or at best the death of the one who witnessed it. People encountering the Hunt might also be abducted to the underworld or the fairy kingdom. In some instances, it was also believed that people's spirits could be pulled away during their sleep to join the cavalcade.

Bathory were a very important band. As a reminder, you two should listen to your reaction to One Rode to Asa Bay again, just to see in what ways their sound changed significantly. This also sounds a lot heavier than most black metal because this came out in 1988, and Bathroy was part of the first-wave of black metal, which was still heavily rooted in thrash metal. The second-wave of black metal that originated in Norway in the early 90s took heavy influence from Bathory and several other bands and evolved the sound to more of what you're familiar with when you think of black metal of today. Of all of the so-called first-wave black metal bands, I would still say that Bathory was the most important and still sounds the closest to modern black metal.

Have I proven my point yet? This was a young kid changing the extreme music scene all by his lonesome. At this point he had musicians to play for him. And not just his father's studio to record in. So the quality of the music got better with each release. This is the second of two album. that gave birth to black metal. Not the party metal Venom made. And there were no muslims on the Scandinavian battlefields. So please don't shit on the viking culture by calling it jihad. And when vikings died in battle. It was believed that half of them were picked by Frøya. The goddess of love To hang out in her halls. And guard her in the eternal war of good and evil that all religions seem to believe in. Before Odin got the rest to have in his halls. There is a lot about the Norse religion that was abolished by christians. And only survived through poems. So everyone thinks that vikings went to Odin's halls to just wage war. And Sori didn't quite like it. That is one more thing that proves that this is black metal. The first black metal bands didn't go for heavy. They went for disturbing. It wasn't until Enslaved found their own style, (heavily inspired by this album) heavy came back into the genre.

Jihad has one meaning and it's to spread Islam by the sword. Jihad is not "having a debate" or an "augment". It's doing everything in your ability to destroy everyone who is not a muslim.
On the other hand, dying as a fighter in Norse cultures is competently different. The way these kingdoms functioned and acted wasn't too different from other European countries at the time. "Vikings" aka the raiders, were a tiny part of Norse societies. They were mainly the fit young men with no families, who could row the best. Other than that, these northern kingdoms traded and explored and did everything like others. They went out of conquests in England, but people still speculate for the reasons to this day. It doesn't mean that they waged war on Christianity itself. And then, lots of cultures went on lots of conquests for lots of reasons.

Finally Paranoid Android got this request done! Think he requested both songs cause the first track bleeds into the second song. Personally the intro is a little to long for me but it does set up the mood and a kick ass surprise when the metal blasts in

Long story short, this song is the connection between the Black Metal Bathory and the Viking Metal Bathory!
I suggest you from the viking era,Twilight of the gods (the complete 14 minutes version "Prologue-Twilight of the Gods-Epilogue")

My introduction to Carcass came from their 'Peel Sessions' EP, which was about as unearthly, weird, eroded, alien, and decayed as anything Carcass in particular - and grindcore in general - had ever done before or since; the 'Peel Sessions' recording sounded like it was performed in another universe and broadcast from the other side using the most primitive and makeshift of experimental equipment so it could be recorded for scientific study by human scientists....

The lyrics and the artwork is based on the Northern European tradition of the Wild Hunt or Furious Host. Odin with the Valkyries ride in the nightsky to take along with them in Valhalla the souls of the dead people that fell in the battlefield. In the other European countries, the tradition is around other local deities (Hecate, Wudan, the Faerie Lady, Perchta etc)

And I know butch nuns, a hippie Catholic priest who played Dylan in Catholic school, a Goth ex-nun, two pastors of LGBT-affirming churches, and a Christian sensei who taught me Jackie Chan moves to nu-metal! And I'm an Atheist, with mostly Wiccan, Atheist, and Buddhist friends!

Bathory was one very talented guy, who played every instrument himself, and produced this classic himself. Tomas Forsberg (stage name Quorthorn) sadly died in 2004 due to heart failure. They stopped touring back in 1985 as he couldn't be bothered arranging gigs.
    Very influential guy.

    The Heart of Odinism:
We do not bend our knee in supplication to the Gods & Goddesses.
Nor do we beg them to do for us; Rather, we ask them to empower us to do for ourselves.
We neither need, nor ask for our Gods forgiveness, we were not born into sin.
We were born to be the best that we can be.
