People btwn then & now had made all kinds of compromises about family culture, moved away from their extended families, and their children have largely grown up in a hollow consumerist monoculture, and largely we get swallowed up in hedonism, anxiety, overwork, and depression (oftentimes inherited from our parents).
2018 is not better than 1950 just because it's the current year.
I highly doubt Varg was referring to the devil in this song. His lyrics are typically either metaphysical, pagan, or philosophical in nature

Early Burzum has some of the most terrifying, tormented, emotional vocals and some of the most beautiful melodies amidst the magnificent tremelo riffs. Great reaction Vin and Sori! I also recommend Burzum "Ea Lord of the Deep" or "Det Somen Gang Var".

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being proud of your people and culture. It is not racist to want to preserve your people, history, identity, culture etc. If people do not wish to race mix then so be it. It is absolutely fine. It's just difficult in today's world. Ideally, it would have been better if everyone remained in their own part of the world with their own people. At least in my opinion. But the call to explore the unknown was far too strong for man to resist I suppose and so here we are.

That song, and alot of Burzum's music makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Its very rhythmic and brooding, but bubbling with life and mystery. Its important to understand that none of his music is racist, or at least I cant find a single lyric that would pass as racism. And even the anti-Christian sentiment is barely found in the music, its almost non-existant. "Lost Wisdom" is maybe the only example of calling out Christianity directly - as the song is about the Christian invasion of Pagan culture and how Christianity burned many Pagan writings and killed many Pagan priests in order to establish itself in Europe. Which is a historical truth mind you. Many of the songs focus on knowledge and about being, and even outside of the music Varg himself is very against the grain of what you would expect. He's proud of his heritage but labeled a racist. He follows his own path, so he is labeled an extremist. Burzum and Varg are both just very misunderstood. And it wouldn't surprise me if you were expecting the song to be without melody and overtly racist like others would want you to believe.

This song is about person who is almost to kill himself, but then instead decides to rise and march proudly through life, until he "one day" goes to "hell" which is Elysium. Elysium is old european pagan "heaven" and theres places named after it in France and Paris. Christians burned the idea of Elysium and made it to look like hell.
Shame that Vin especially didnt understand the meaning of song and Varg. He speaks about this person in the song wanting to go to christian hell, underworld. This isnt the case as person in the song is enlightened and goes to his real pagan paradise..one day.

I mean look at the time for this video, 28 minute video for a 5 minute song. Can you imagine how long it would be had it been Det Som...? Jesus Tod is excellent but I dont feel like it shows off every emotion of Burzum quite as well as Key to the Gate. Jesus Tod is like raw anger without any stopping, literally blast beat and tremolo the whole way thru, its a angry song. At least with Key to the Gate they get to see more than 1 aspect of Burzum's music.

Love your reaction! :) To add up to the meaning behind the lyrics, Varg, the man behind burzum grew up in norway. One of the last European countries to convert to christianity (and through bloodshed alas) so varg has some spite towards what chriistianity did to his pagan homeland. Where pagan nature rites became sacraments for the devil, where healers became hexxing witches and so forth.
Varg writes this song in the perspective of the pagan, who lost everything to chritianity and is now ostracised for his old beliefs. "I will open the gates to Hell one day" in this context sees "Hell" as the old ways that have been almost burnt out by christianity. He will relit that flame which has lead him and and "awaken" others like him who have forgotten.
And another line which can be interpretated is "though I seek thy hell, you close the gates before me. Your life is right and so I must follow you to your paradise" is although he wants to continue to worship his gods, no one will let him because of the authoritarian church that will force him to believe in this foreign religion he is faced with.

I think this song (and Lost wisdom) define black metal better than any other. There is so much to it, it is hard to even begin to start explaining it. This song has always spoken to me, 15 years after I still love it.
It's a magical moment when Burzum is one of the first artists an unborn child hears.

Enjoying someone's art doesn't necessarily mean you support their personal beliefs, but instead, can separate the art from the artist. Just to clarify, Varg recorded all of his Burzum material on his own. He played and recorded all of the instruments himself.
You need to check some of his later songs like "Jeg Faller" or "Glemselens Elv", the lyrics there are pretty understandable and his vocal style is totally different. The music itself is also really beautiful and hypnotizing.
I love those deep riffs that always accompany a Burzum track. It’s like hiding gold at the bottom of an abyss...

It’s been a year or so since I dusted off a Burzum album. Yet the past 24 hours it’s all I have been listening to. Low and behold, what do I see when I open TH-cam tonight?
Side note, Varg has explained in interviews that his music and all the church burnings that happened in this era weren’t about Satan or Satanism. It was certainly anti-Christianity, but that’s because Christians destroyed the Nordic culture and they wanted to reclaim it. An enlightening documentary I highly recommend is called Until The Light Takes Us.

Watch his interviews if possible, great Christmas material, very true in his beliefs and an intellectual. Lots can be learnt from him even if you don't believe much of what he says. He's not necessarily a BAD guy. He just loves his family and heritage, he may not admit it (ever) but he's genuinely worried that his heritage will cease to exist one day due to Christian/Catholic beliefs becoming more and more widespread.
He's not racist, he's separatist. Yeah, very thin line I know, but there is a line. He's never said one race is better than another in every way. He has, however, made mention of how white people are better suited for certain climates and how black people are better suited for others.
I won't defend anything he's done, but you gotta try and see it from his perspective.

Yeah, not the best thing, but he could've kept going and killing people but he didn't. Just killing one person out of reasonable fear for your life doesn't make you a terrible person, buuuuuut on the.other hand he could be lying and it was an act of anger, and he used the opportunity to get of easier than he would of had he been tried for premeditated murder. It almost looked like Sori had an epiphany after listening to the song! The melody goes many places and the vocals are quite emotional - that’s why it is one of my favorite BM songs.
