I’ve had 2 Honda Civics both EX models, a 97 (my 1st car) and a 2k (my 2nd) both I modified it. 2nd car had more suspension mods on it, and a GT wing and fiberglass front lip. Both in major accidents.
I know the plight of what I hated about my Honda - but remember Honda owners hating on Honda ( you’re not hating , you’re stating )
      And now I have a 04’ Nissan 350Z that I’ve have for 17yrs.
Get a car that has what you want. If it’s a Honda Honda or something else. Do what you love. And a real car guy doesn’t hate on another person’s car that they are fixing up. Just stating the obvious.
But seriously the D16 Series SOHC is an easy engine to build and modify. And as a Honda guy at heart 💜 Save the D-Series engine. If I ever get another Honda again it would be an older Hatch. And I would put in D16Y8 engine ( of the EX model ) in an 89 or 90 hatch as a work vehicle for my cleaning business. 👍🏼

For number 1, the first thing people should do is get an alarm AND a club. I have both for my 96 civic. Next, make a project to hide your alarm. Most installers just put it underneath the dashboard and call it a day. I hid mine in a different location and ran alarm wire with my factory wire so its really hard to tell what wire is alarm wire. I also added a killswitch that activates with my alarm.

I owned a 6th gen accord sedan (98-02) and one day found myself hitting a tree at about 25 - 30 mph. That was a wild ride, but I'll say this those two air bags went off like a shotgun blast. They worked like they were supposed to keeping me from smashing my face on the steering wheel. What sold on Honda safety was how the car transferred the impact around me and to the rear of the car. The front windshield even small crack in it, didnt break, but the rear window shattered. I wasn't hurt just a bit dazed for a moment. Car crashes are not fun lol do avoid them if possible. Be safe.

Cops recovered it within a week but ever since I installed an alarm and use a steering wheel lock. Might have to consider putting a “boot” on my wheel in the future too lol.
I haven’t tried it yet but I hear for some of these cars you can pull out the relay that powers the fuel pump so even if they hot wire it they won’t be able to get it going and you can put it back in when you’re ready to drive the car.

100% agree with every reason you described. I've had a few friends crash their Honda's and guy wearing seat belt is doing ok but guy without seat belt still isn't the best/"back to normal" and that wreck was almost 2 yrs ago. I've had alot of break ins, mainly radios, change and some parts in trunk stolen. Had a first gen CRV that started with filed down key and could pull key out while running..... I've owned all different kind of Honda's from slammed civics, preludes, accords and integras to a lifted CRV but my current 92 eg sedan with B16a2 swap is probably rowdiest of em all. Slammed with complete front and rear suspension swap from 94 integra. Steering is soooooo much lighter, bigger brakes/hubs and rear disk brakes. Went with sedan bc I got 2 kiddos and they love riding in "Panda". My kids named it that bc it's white with 5% tint all around with brow on windshield plus 5% blacked out 1 piece headlights.

There is nothing wrong with keeping it stock. If I go to a show and I see one car that looks like trash despite having $100k spent on it and super clean stock 1993 Camry, I'm checking out that Camry. Do the things to your car that will actually make it better.
Also, these are _absolutely_ money pits. If you want a super clean 90s Honda, expect to spend $15k all in to have a car that's worth (at best) $8k. What matters is that you got that extra $7k of value out of the experience. If you bought at new car that was $35k and sold it for $28k in 5 years, you probably wouldn't be mad. In fact, it's probably a miracle if it's even worth that much. You're probably sitting on closer to $17k. It's okay if you lose money on these things because by doing the work, you'll have gained something else along the way. That, and the memories you have tied up in the car.
We are stewards of these machines, and it can only be our hope that we can pass them along to the next person in better shape than that in which we found them.

Yet, I couldn't stop watching the next video, and the next. And the next. I like your down to earth attitude, and I think the reason the Civic is much more popular with your audience over the sweet Evo, is because it's a dream available to most people - it's within reach for most of us to spend $1,500 on a car and take it from there. My preventative measures for theft on a 90s Honda below.. And this worked on my 98' Integra for a few years before I sold it. Parked out in SoCal and even in Portland where, IMO- theft is worse than SoCal. Integra had some goodies as well, OEM ITR lip, Racing Hart 3pc wheels, on coilovers, etc.
    - Instead of a steering wheel club, use the AutoLock Pro. Our steering wheels can be cut pretty easily. The AutoLock Pro locks onto your clutch pedal, and not many thieves want to spend their time down there in the pedal box. Of course, if you want to go the extra mile, you can use both lol.
    - 2-Way Pager as you mentioned. I had my alarm LED installed near the coin pocket by where your left knee sits, it flashes and lets you see the AutoLock installed down there. Also, take time to actually tuck the alarm brain deep into the dash. I also relocated the alarm horn at the firewall, below the intake manifold. Many installers just put it out in the open, essentially allowing the thieves to get access to your car, pop the hood and cut the horn. To go along with this, spend extra and get a back-up battery, extra sensors for hood/trunk/doors.
    - Kill switch as you mentioned again. If you choose to install one, make it look as clean and sleek as possible. Kill switch is only as good as the install, so spend some time to make it look like wiring came from factory.
    - Do the hood cable relocation. Our hood cable runs right under the driver side fender well. Thieves can easily pull it to open your hood and disable your alarm before entering. This is a free mod, and very easy to do. Just relocate it into the engine bay.
    - And to compound onto it, if you don't mind spending extra money, invest in LoJack. Not really a theft deterrent, but damn does it come in handy if your car gets stolen.

There are seat belts lol or am I the only one to use them... And if you hit an animal or a person and it gets inside of your car, what is a chance of them hitting right into your teeth. Why not a nose? why not a cheek or a chin a neck... Seriously is that a common thing?

Always been a Prelude guy. I got a 95SE as a 2nd car prior to college in 2001. Man....I loved that car. Few things happened, bippity boppity boop, I find myself in the Navy in 2005. I'm from TN. I get stationed in CA. Cool...well, I wanna bring out my Prelude to have, y'know...a car. Have it shipped, get to enjoy it for a couple weeks. Stay over at a friends house one night. Woke up the next morning...minus a car. Police useless. Eventually found it 3-4 days later. A farmer found it ditched in his fields. Got it going again...Not even close to as nice as it was before, but it was wheels. Eventually sold the car in NM in 2008, and the guy was still driving it around there in 2015. Car had quite the life. In 2018, I had the opportunity to purchase a 94 Prelude Si One owner. Had alot of miles, but had been treated well mechanically. THe paint/trim however was ROUGH. Found a place to get a decent cheap paint job. Refinished what I could of the rubber trim. Replaced all the bushings, new tires, etc. And I still drive it today alongside my 2017 Camaro SS, and 2018 Titan. Just can't beat a Honda..There's just something about them. But unfortunately, yes. As soon as you mentioned THEFT First. I had to chime in lol....Cheers!

And this was 04, so it was only ten years old at the time. The “trick” is patience, using panel pry tools and pushing clips back when the panels won’t give and just starting over. People yank and tug versus actually undoing the clips.

To be fair though, like myself, I imagine most people's Honda is the A to B car. I door dash in mine, and when you put 30k+ miles a year on a car, the paint is the bottom of your list.
And in my defense I bought it beat up and rattle-canned. Previous owner(s) chopped the muffler too. Straight pipe was pretty cheap, and kept the exhaust gas out of the cabin.
As a matter of fact, it's actually a bonus. A beat up, loud and ugly pos is the last thing someone would want to steal.

I agreed completely with everything you said, my 08 honda civic si got broken into once with nothing stolen but everything inside the glove box was thrown out like it was a prank. I also agreed with the build quality as well, my headliner has already fallen off at one corner, I've broken so many plastic interior pieces and clips. These 8th gen civic are famous with their cheap speakers that gets shot after a while, the interior quality are just not that well but like you said Honda is more about the engine. I much rather to have a reliable car than driving a lawn mower with fancy leather seats, although I must argue a lawn mower would probably have better safety rating than my civic. I was in a accident almost a year ago that resulted in my civic being smashed in on the lower front driver side, my bumper, headlight, driver fender and part of the body frame along with the headlight housing frame was smashed in but yet my air bag did not deploy either. However I am quite grateful at that since nothing major was damaged mechanically, so I still drive the civic to this day with a new bumper and fender to hide the smashed frame. I know it does not look pretty now but I simply don't have the money as a college student, I don't have any interest making it faster either. So I only spent my money and time on maintenance, handing and cosmetic. I wish one day I will have the money to repair the damage from my accident and make this car last as long as possible as my daily!

Fellow Idahoan and Civic owner, I had a few thoughts while watching this video I contemplated making. Why not?
I bought my 92 Civic for $600. It's ugly as hell, but is fun to drive. One of the previous owners rattle canned the car flat black. It was once red. They didn't do any prep work. Didn't mask off the glass or anything. The black is coming off and it just looks bad. I'd love to make this thing look nice again. But I'm focused on getting things fixed mechanically first. My biggest issue in owning the car is theft. I've had stuff stolen out of it before. The doors don't unlock from the outside. For the life of me I can't get it figured out. Until then, keeping the car ugly looking is a bit of a deterrent. I don't blast my stereo loud when I get within at least a half mile of my destination to draw attention to the car. One day I'd like to get this all fixed. And after watching your videos on detailing the car, I think I'll be spending some time getting the interior cleaned out. It drives me nuts how dirty it is.
And yes, it is a money pit. Things like to fail or break all at once.

Cool thing about Preludes is they had immobilizers (at least the 5th gen does) so they are much harder to steal than most of the other 90s Hondas whose names aren't NSX. I bought my Prelude off a guy last year for 2700 bucks. It has a ton of miles on it, but no major issues aside from some balljoints and boots. But it must have baked in the California sun for 25 years because _all_ of the interior plastics are _super_ brittle. I once pressed my hazard lights to thank a Charger who let me change lanes, and the button broke off and into the dash. It only needs the radio bezel and center vent replaced, but those run $200 and $100 respectively on eBay, and there are way more important things it needs right now. But it still makes the interior look junky. Oh, and the clear coat is absolutely destroyed. One of these days, I'm going to try my hand at repainting it. I think I'll do spray paint in the original red and _a lot_ of wet sanding. Good news is that since it was a California car, it's got no rust.

That was my favorite car growing up in the Dominican Republic. I could have gotten one but went with a 17 sti and built it up. 700 hp currently. I appreciate these cars when I see them on the road. I just thought it would be harder to make them fast

Top tip for anti-theft, buy a removable aftermarket steering wheel, when you park it just take it with you, yes it sucks to carry it around but hey at least it's guaranteed your car will still be there

I haven't been very strategic. 1000 just on the soundsystem so far. 300 on brakes weren't broken just didnt have enough stopping power. I've only had the car 3 months...

At least we still talked about 90’s Honda, so many other brands is forgotten.

A Club saved my 1992 Prelude from being stolen. It actually stalled the guy so much that the cops caught him trying to steal it.

Its hilarious the fact you bring up the driver side door panel, on my 95 eg hatch i have a huge problem with my driver side window and i constantly have to take my door panel off, and put it back on. Haven't broken a clip in my 20-30times taking it off and putting it on

Very detailed. It's totally different owning a 90s honda here in the Philippines. 90s hondas here are very expensive and we dont have a junkyard to scout cheap parts.

I feel him on the "I drive a 1990 something (insert car)" it's not just civics that get that rep, the 90's vw's get that too. Because yes I tell people I drive a 97 golf, and I get the same response he does until they see it.

Hello to take door panels off without breaking the clips get a pryer tool I have a 6 inch pryer, then look up where the clips locations are and then very gently pry it apart I slid a bit of rubber tubing over the main body of my pryer so it doesn't scratch the exo in the door

This video was very usefull. Im planning to buy myself an EK hatch...and the first thing i wanted was change the steering wheel...but since you brought the story about that being unsafe i think im going to keep it as it is
But the aftermarket ones are so good looking!

I just had dropped a boat load into my 99 and not even on fancy stuff haha. New drums, hubs, calipers, rotors, starter, coolant temp sensor, hoses, intake (had a really old fucked up one), tail lights (old ones were waterlogged), headers, cat, and exhaust because whoever owned it before didn't have factory hookups and all his welds were failing!

GSR owner here, number 4 is spot on. you have no idea how often i see an accord or ex civic with wings and shitty body kits, exhaust, and wheels. i can't wait to restore my shitbox and be the 1% of the honda club

5th Gen Accord owner here. I have broken my inside door handle 3 times. Oh, and I've replaced 5 climate control knobs over the past 6 months. Also stock suspension and ball joints has never been sketchier. Death rattle is definitely real lmaooo
