    Many thanks. I needed to replace the left windshield bracket (the one that moves up and down the bar). The part was reasonably priced but labour costs to fit would have been horrendous. I was able to do the job myself thanks to this video. Thanks again. Mike

    Thanks for the video! I didn't think the bent bar was repairable till I saw this. New kit is over $200! Two things to add to this: The speedometer is held in place by a single C clip with a little overhang on it that lets you pull it off with needle nose pliers. Remove it then you can pull the speedometer off and it makes removing the GPS bar bolts easier. Also I was able to preload the spring by half a turn. I positioned the height of the bar and attached the spring box in at an angle. It took some bending of the plastic cover on the spring but it did work. I released the preload after I noticed that it started to push up one side of the bar higher than the other. If it its starts to drop while riding I will add the preload back in. Thanks again for the video!

      Ricardo S - glad you found it useful. I might also go back in and put that half turn preload in. It didn’t seem possible to put less than a full turn when I tried it. The adjustment on mine works fine when not riding, but once I get to about 20 mph, and if the windshield is at the lowest position, the adjustment knob won’t turn, and I’m not about to over do it and break off the knob. As I recall, it would adjust fine when riding before dropping the bike and bending that cross arm. Anyway, sounds like a good reason to shoot a follow up video now! Thanks again for your comments!

    This video was immensely helpful in me replacing a broken windscreen support bracket on my 2015 1200GSA (I have the big Touratech windscreen, which is already heavy, and I think my friend may have snapped the bracket popping wheelies on my bike!). So glad you shot the video, thank you. That spring mechanism is a bit of a pain, but it worked out in the end. I paid $35 for the replacement bracket, and paid myself nothing to install it. I can only imagine how much the dealer would have charged for this job! (-; Thumbs up!

    When replacing the coil spring did you just slide it back on or did have to somehow preload it?

    • @zooskifilms
      @zooskifilms  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @michaelvadney5803

      @@zooskifilms I got it back together. I found that if you just slide it back on that when you rotate in one direction you can hear the spring just rotate in place which does nothing. I had to carefully separate the spring box and then preload the spring by spinning it and the backing plate just about one turn. It can only be preloaded in one direction so that helps. The spring provides assistance in one direction. You preload it and bolt the inner portion first and finally snap the outer cover on to finish it. I needed to look at the parts diagram in order to see how the spring box snaps are engaged so I could take it apart without breaking it.

    Thanx for the quick answer.
    The problem I have (and i think other BMWr1200gslc) is that there's a lot of backlash/tolerance of the adjustment system.
    If I ride on a bumpy road I see the windscreen and cross arm jumping up and down. So I was wondered if there was possibel to put the tension of the spring higher... Sorry for my writing but I'm from Belgian (Dutch speaking).

    • @zooskifilms
      @zooskifilms  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Speedi Mouse - it's a good question. Not sure I have an answer, but would seem to me that you would need to apply about a 90 degree maximum rotation on the spring to create more tension. To me any more than this would make the movement of the mechanism too firm and not easily adjustable. You would have to open up the spring tensioner assembly, something I did not do. I will have sometime within the next week to open it up and see if it could be done. Does the tension seem softer to you now after riding for some time or has it always been that loose?

    • @klusmoustafa
      @klusmoustafa 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I push the crossarm up and down there's a backlass/tolerance of 1cm (0.39inch), I don't know if that's normal.
      I've bought the BMW with a bigger windshield and don't have any experience with the original windshield but to place the shield they didn't had to dismantle the adjusment-system. So maybe the backlass is normal and maybe with the bigger windshield it is more visible on bumpy/off- roads.

    Fingers crossed you still read comments on old videos.
    At 7.40 in the video how do you removes that end "case" with the spring in?
    I've given mine a good pull but it won't release.
    Any ideas?
    All bolts are out.
    Thank you

    • @zooskifilms
      @zooskifilms  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daren G - if both bolts are out, and it’s the opposite side of the hand crank, it should slide out. I would try rotating the hand crank to rotate the arm to a point where that spring has less tension on it. I’m wondering if too much tension would make it more difficult to remove. Let us know how it turns out. Best of luck!

    • @darengarraway
      @darengarraway 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the quick reply!
      Yeah it was under tension. I'd tried top, bottom and then minor adjustments to the knob. Lower position and slight twisting of the cross bar and it popped off.
      Thanks again.

    Hi there,
    is it possible to explain how you've mounted the side with the spring on? Did you have to tension the spring before replacing?
    thx for the video.

    • @zooskifilms
      @zooskifilms  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Speedi Mouse - no pre tensioning was necessary. I believe you have to be at the highest position (may have been lowest position - I can't recall exactly, you will know once you try to re-assemble) to line up the slot from the tension spring to the arm slot.

  • @andrelclucato
    @andrelclucato 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, buddy, let me ask you:
    How you had adjusted the spring pressure while remounted the left side of mechanism?
    I see my windscreen with low resistance at wind, and the windscreen frequently goes at the minimum position.
    i'd like to put some pressure in that spring to reinforce this resistance.

    • @zooskifilms
      @zooskifilms  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried putting a pre-load on the spring but could not rotate it one turn (as I recall it would need a full turn in order to mate with the bracket arm) so I assumed the existing tension was enough in its resting position. I noticed my windscreen position also changes with how fast I'm going, so I find myself adjusting it periodically based on conditions.
