      What price would you pay for survival, not just of yourself but of your entire species?
      That is the question frostpunk asks of it's players. At low difficulty it is nothing but a passing query, but on higher difficulties you WILL be forced to chose.
      I do hope the frostpunk 2 goes much deeper in city detail and construction, but even more I hope the laws become more complex.

      To be exatingly fair, engineers at full tilt is more like running an imperial japanese labour camp. You'll have those convicts dying like flies, but unlike with the nazi death camps them dying is not the actual goal. It's just the cost of getting work done. The construction needs to progress on schedule, and you're fueling that progress with blood. You're not actively murderous towards the convict laborers, you're just completely fucking apathetic about their survival.

  • @TheGallantDrake
    @TheGallantDrake 2 ปีที่แล้ว +56

    It’s my opinion that the game has a deeper message in that you can actually ride the line and accomplish all your goals without going too far. However, this requires foreknowledge and I think that’s the point: the only way forward is through study and a determination to find the right way forward *before* it’s ever needed.

    You can build the generator without taking it too far,but its extremely difficult. Especially the engineer route,workers will be bickering constantly and keeping motivation up from falling completely will be an everyday struggle. Its way easier with the workers in both cases,be that not stepping over the line,be that a gulag cosplay.

    The thing with Frostpunk and its morality is that it never forces you to go to the extreme.
    The law options are given to you, but you can choose to ignore them and it is very much possible to progress without them.
    But as you play, the nature of your circumstances becomes more dire.
    People start dying and you might feel like you begin to lose control, you feel like its a spiral downward and every step of the way, the lines you are offered to step over become more and more alluring, more attractive.
    It perfectly provides the choice and dilema of "How far are you willing to go to survive" and "How much are you willing to sacrifice to keep your morality".
    It starts relatively small, as mentioned, with longer shift and rations, but it quickly devolves into a lot of worse stuff not mentioned in Brickys videos.
    For example: Children are mouths to feed, but they dont give anything back in the shortterm. Are you willing to pull space and resources to build a child care center for them, effectively taking manpower and resources away from other places that you desparately need... or, do you enact child labour laws so the children might operate mines where they can fit in spaces adults cant? But that isnt enough. How far are you willing to push the childrens suffering and death for survival?`
    Another example with food. Barely anything lives, or even grows in a frozen wasteland. Starvation can become normality and the dead can pile up.
    But... the dead are made of flesh and bone... They are edible.
    Will you still give them a proper burial to keep the deads dignity or do you decide its time to eat your dead relatives?
    Where. Do. You. Draw. The. Line.
    Its a peak example of art in videogame form.
    Highly recommend the playthrough.
    Especially the ending of the first game will test you to your limits.
    Death on an unprecedented scale, whole sections of your city collapse, you cant save everyone.
    The cold gets so severe that leaving their houses becomes impossible.
    Everyone fends for themselves under the great storm and the bodies on the street keep piling up and the city, humanity, is sure to end, unless you, the player become the devil to save them.
    Because the city MUST survive...

    the thing I like the most about Frostpunk is the choices you make throughout the game. even though you could go full extreme on every side. you can also choose not to do so if you don't feel the need. you are not forced to do it and it will actually give a different ending depending on it. even will say it in the epilogue.

    This game is just great. I personally enjoyed the 'hard choices' tbh. This game really has it's moment where you are forced to think "I know it's wrong, but we still have to do it".. and that little dilemma is what makes this game as great as it is in my opinion.
    I remember playing the base game for the first time. At the beginning I was trying to make all the 'good' choices, and during the last half of that playthrough I was some sort of a dictator, with little goon squards roaming the streets and attacking everyone who dared criticizing me openly in public. It's funny how fast this game turns you into a... monster... :D

    This expansion definitely adds some good flavor to the base game, and changes it up far more from what the other scenarios offer. It's shorter, but more varies, and I think it's only real problem is that some major events always happen at certain intervals so you basically know when to expect them on subsequent playthroughs. However, knowing they're coming doesn't always mean you'll be ready for them.
    I'd love to see you guys react to the Spiffing Brit's videos. He has plenty about all kinds of games - as he's all about breaking/exploiting them in interesting ways - but good starts would be his "Can you beat Skyrim with a Fork challenge" and "Can you beat Skyrim Worst Sword challenge" videos, or his Fallout 4 "Can you beat Fallout 4 worst gun challenge"

  • @jaidenthekid6051
    @jaidenthekid6051 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    An ideal game of Frostpunk is a morally bankrupt one. People are resources, nothing matters more than survival, yada yada. The game is exceedingly easy if you go too far from the outset. But the good endings are the ones in which you do the morally right thing, to put down the lawbook when you have all the necessary ones in place, to have humanity and still come out on top.
    The real hard mode of the game, the real challenge is being moral on the highest difficulty. And it's still possible, but how much you have to tow the line is up to your skill in management.
    And the real replayability is when you realize that the book of laws is sectioned off into rising categories, (You can tell by the changing art on the "cover of the book" in the law selection menu) and that staying within those categories means you get a different ending. If you side with the Engineers in The Last Autumn, how far do you go with them? Do you simply allow them more freedom to increase work safety, while still being at risk of strikes, do you take it a step further and become union-busters? Do you take the leap and make a penal colony? How far does the penal colony go, do you turn the worksite entirely into a labor death camp, or are they supplementary to actual workers? When you take the final law and enter the category of Subservience, there is no going back, you will get a bad ending. This is all in one single faction.

  • @DxAxxxTyriel
    @DxAxxxTyriel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I've played Frostpunk, finished all the scenarios. The Last Autumn was great, but in all the scenarios I never had to go to the extremes. There was never a reason for me to ever go too far into Law/Religion or Labour/Engineers. Just take the good stuff and you can manage the rest. But I feel this shouldn't have been the case. I feel that these paths that you go down in the laws, they need to become a bigger thorn in your side like the Londoners. Like literally a faction in your city that you have to deal with, and they FORCE you to advance the laws towards the extremes on their paths, because they have more influence than you in your city. In my playthroughs where it asked me "we should sign this extreme" I just saw "Let's do that now" and then I didn't sign anything and closed the law screen. So I was never forced to become too much of a monster. The refugees was probably the hardest for me.

    • @magni5648
      @magni5648 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I kinda disagree. The real lesson to be learned from the morality system is that authoritarianism is ultimately a crutch for incompetent leadership/societies, not something necessary or desireable. If you made it mandatory to push down the law trees even for a perfect playthrough, that lesson would be perverted into the exact opposite.
      Not going too far and still making it out in good shape is the real challenge of the game, and that challenge needs to be surmountable to the player for it all to work.

    I love RPG. I love playing a game that allows you to customize your character and play as you in a different world full of wonders and magic.
    But most of the time, when I find myself face to face with choices, I tend to hesitate.
    When I found myself forced to make a hard choice, I just couldn't.
    I know it's just a game. I know it doesn't really matter. But not for me.
    Every character is alive. The world they live in exist.
    Shin Megami Tensei is a beloved game series for me, but each time I played them, I just can't finish it...
    Frostpunk looks like an amazing game. But it's probably not for me. Such moral dilemma is so exciting to see, but to experience it would probably leave a Mark on my already fragile heart...

  • @notoffensivenpc8400

    i've played the main scenario three times. twice as order and once as faith. the first time around i reached to the point of a propaganda center, a prison and spies but refused to go into new order. the second time around i signed a handful of laws that would be considered extreme by few but i personally found them to be not too bad.
    in the third run where i ran faith i managed to get an achievment where i didn't sign any extreme or inhumane laws. the most extreme one was just building a massive temple which although was a boost to hope, was still a waste of resources. for a good part of the game i even refused to establish the "faith keepers", thinking they would be zealatous assholes.
    it is definitely possible in a few scenarios to be fair, but it can be difficult if you don't have a grasp of what happens at what time.

    Depending on your difficulty level. If you plan VERY CAREFULLY you can avoid the worst radical laws with decent time and morals.
    During high-difficulty playthroughs, YOU WON'T HAVE A BLOODY CHOICE. It gets so demanding that you'll want to get the Red TERROR and SERVITUDE as fast as possible just to barely make it past the finish line. With numerous casualties of course.
    It's a vibe check man... all these other games online are so cute when they say "How do I justify this philosophical debate"
    And then FROSTPUNK grabs you by the collar and says, " DO YOU WANT TO WIN OR FEEL GOOD AND LOSE?
    This game isn't asking you for your viewpoint and opinions. It is a question of how many times are you going to watch yourself FAIL before you break? And Can you come up with a special plan to win?

    The big difference for my first and second playthrough was being able to prepare. When you go in blind, you are making decisions in the moment that they are most valuable. You will have no idea what the consequences are and you will struggle. The second playthrough, you know what is important to focus on now and what can wait until later, as well as knowing how much to prepare for certain events in the game.

    You can most definetly finish every single scenario on Extreme and Survivor mode difficulties (the hardest ones) without going too far. But the game is really unforgiving.
    The thing is, these laws represent pretty greatly how being extremist just turns your on logic against itself. They start pretty great and "fair" to everyone in a sense, but the game slowly whittles down you to extremism.
    I.e: You side with the engineers to increase the safety of the workplace but as you lose your hand you start getting convicts so you don't need to provide them with a safe workplace.
    This shows how, as people's ideals get towards extremism, they just get nonsensical and lose their way from its original porpouse and morals.

The hardest difficulty I’ve beaten the game on without going to extremes is Medium, and even then that was with a few previous failed runs and one successful run on easy behind me.
