Jazakallah khair. this course is an excellent idea, before I had been self studying but did wish for some sort of online course esp for girls as some of the main institutes in madina or makkah are difficult to get info/enroll. Love how organized and flexible this course is, may Allah reward the developers and teachers abundantly as it is helping alot of us more than you will know.

    Lecture 1:
    What is tafsir?
Tafsir in arabic means to explain, to make clear, to uncover
According to the specialties it means to clarify the saying of allah swt or its a knowledge that the book of allah would be understood through by clarifying the meaning to take from rules or wisdom from what's being said in the quran
    Difference between tafsir and ta'wil
Tafsir-to make clear on what was reported by the Quran itself or by the prophet pbuh or by the sahaba -> this is riwayah, while dirayah means your own understanding based on the Arabic language.
Ta’wil- means interpreting religious texts in a deeper way, rather than just taking their literal meaning.
Surat Al ^Imran, Ayah 7 means, “No one knows the true meaning of these verses except Allah and the people who are firmly rooted in the knowledge of the Religion.” Ibn ^Abbas, for whom the Prophet made a supplication, said, “I am among those who are firmly rooted in the knowledge of the religion.” The hadith related by al-Bukhariyy, Ibn Majah, and al-Hafidh Ibn al-Jawziyy relays that the Prophet supplicated to Allah for Ibn ^Abbas by saying, “O Allah, teach him the knowledge of the hadith and the ta’wil of the Book” (i.e. the true meanings of the Qur’anic verses)."
Book: the word Tafseer is taken from the root word fasr which means making clear. In summerized terminology, it means the science through which the book of Allah is understood.
Ilm at-tafseer is based on -
    1. Quran
    2. Sunnah
    3. Sahaba
    4. Arabic language
    5. Al-bayan
    6. Usul-al-fiqh
    7. Qiraa'at
    8. Asbab an-nuzul
    9. An-nasikh wal-mansukh

Shaykh looks very dedicated. Masha Allah. That's the kind of teachers we want. Jajhahu Allah Khaira.

This lecture covers from ‘Definition of ilm at-tafsir’ on page 11, until the end of page 12.
    2:27
We can't possibly understand the meanings of the Quran correctly without understanding the context it was revealed in
    2:42
Book: the word Tafseer is taken from the root word fasr which means making clear. In summerized terminology, it means the science through which the book of Allah is understood.
    2:47
Book: another name for Tafseer is Ta'weel - reviewing/revising. أول - يأول - تئويل

Important example: اسفر الصبح meaning the dawn has become brighter, implying that is has become clear.
    6:14
According to Mufassireen RA, بيان كلام الله
    7:25
Tafseer and Ta'weel both give similar meanings, especially in the older and ancient traditions of Islam
    7:38
Ta'weel can give the complete opposite meaning, i.e. the person's own whims and desires. That's a big difference between Tafseer and Ta'weel.
    8:24
Tafseer can be through روايه which means it comes through solid "narrations" like the narrations of the Quran itself, or Prophet SAW or companions, etc. Whereas Tafseer that happens through one's own derivation is called درايه
    9:55
Ibn Abbas RA is called the Habr al-Ummah or the "Scholar of the Ummah". He is also called Turjuman al-Quran, i.e. the Interpreter of the Quran.

E.g. in Surat Al Fatiha: one recitation says Maaliki yaumudin and an other maliki yaumudin. The Hafs qira'a has a long alif which makes an active participle meaning owner, while the Warsh qira'a is a nominal noun meaning king. And both meaning are correct Masha Allah, so you can see how the different qira'at enrich the understanding

      Fassara = to uncover/expose
In Tafsir we uncover actual intended meanings of Allah's words just like the way morning exposes what was hidden with the darkness of night
