I've never seen a video moment like the one eight minutes in where he shows the progression of a simple Moog sequence into a swirling wash of sound...and I'm like "Yep, that's exactly how Tycho sounds." A rare peak into the technique of a producer. Thank you.
Bro, let's theorize! It looks like a teensy 4 microcontroller mounted on a custom stack fab enclosure. The key layout is a satisfying ortholinear. I have no idea what kind of keycaps those are, but I imagine they are low profile switches due to how shallow the keypress depth is. I imagine it's hand soldered because of how close they keys are.
@@Alkatross Thanks! Great detail here to get started. I would seriously pay money for this unit, along with the reaper actions/scripts/etc. for each function. Been looking for something like this for ages, but it seems like the Reaper market just isn't big enough for the big hardware players to make something like this.
Same, I miss the tunes of the early days but also glad he has settled into his own signature style. I prefer the tape days of his but he has a cool hybrid set up.
This is like a dream studio. I think most musicians have exactly his idea, everything should be easily accessible, turn on and just play. Also I like that he wasn't like "oh I only use hardware cause i'm cool", very honest with his use of VST's. Real musician vibe, it's really amazing to see how much he knows about this stuff and how passionate he is ofc
I used to work with Scott around 98 at an electronics store called the good guys!, on Sunrise Blvd outside Sacramento. He was a student at Sac state at the time. He was in personal electronics/computers and sold computers, cameras and Walkmans etc. He seems pretty much the same in this video except for the gray hair.
Admittedly I haven't kept up on Tycho's music but his first couple of albums are some of the most gorgeous electronic-based music I've ever heard. I love how honest he is about getting 75% of his sound "in-the-box" despite having all that amazing hardware.
I could listen to Scott all day! What a fantastic resource this video was. Tycho is my biggest influence and his earlier work makes me quite nostalgic, but above all his music just sounds so good!
Scott’s taste is immaculate. Dive is still in heavy rotation; his tone on that album is the essence of the “warm analog” sound! An inspiration to me for sure.
The way Scott's brain works is so incredible and I feel like it manifests itself physically into the ergonomics of the space overall which is so cool to see. Heck, even down to how comfortably dressed he is in his creation space. It's all about ease and getting from A to B with as little resistance as possible. Huge respect for him! Incredible video, great edit, wonderful sound!! PS, who's got a line on the slippers? Those things look COMFY.

I'd love to hear a conversation/collab with him and Tony Anderson, my two favorite reverb enthusiasts =). Also, thank you Reverb for making this awesome video!
Getting the chance to see this studio up close, it just became apparent how much Scott has thought through each part of his process. Truly incredible, and it offers a lot of tips for all of us in setting up our own spaces.

Tycho and Bonobo for me have always been such a unique and beautiful flavor of music that my ear taste buds cant get enough of! Definitely going to be researching some of this stuff and seeing if I want to try it out or not, keep making these videos please!
Totally inspirational. I saw Tycho live at the Greek Theater with Jaga Jazzist several years ago and have been a big fan ever since. Along with Boards of Canada and Casino vs Japan--the attention to the sculpting of the sounds Scott uses is so creative, warm and transporting. These artists continue to be a huge inspiration for my own work of the last 6 years as a solo artist. Electronic music is the new classical music of the modern age and it was a thrill to see behind this wizard's curtain.
I was one of a handful who won a private Q&A video call tour of his studio and it was absolutely fascinating. I'm not a music expert, just a music lover. My career is in tech, so seeing it from the technology aspect was particularly intriguing. The entire experience though felt incredibly surreal. I'd never had the opportunity to talk to a favorite artist like that before. Thank you Scott!!

Pleasantly surprised by how "tame" his setup is, and that he didn't at any point turn the camera to an enormous wall of modular equipment and start talking about how it's the only way for him to get his signature sound. He knows what gear he likes and prefers to have physical access to, and is happy to let everything else exist in plugin-land. Truly inspirational to someone like myself, with neither the time nor money to invest into tons of esoteric hardware chasing the sounds I want.
Love Scott's music since way back. I like to tinker with gear, but yeah instrument wise I have a similar setup, but in terms of outboard gear, omg what a setup! Its obviously working for him, but for me I wouldn't be able to get my head around all this gear, its like too much for my brain!

I love that pedal board w/ the RND direct box and the patch bay right there integrated into his stand. I don't understand why someone doesn't mass-market some setup like this.
Great overview, nicely explained, wish you had a better shot of the custom Reaper macro keyboard, it would have been interesting to see what macros/commands were important enough to turn to hardware to him. Interesting custom speaker/monitor control there also he made no mention of.
I truly love what Scott does, and seeing the gear in action now I know why! I'm a big fan of the matriarch+bigsky+deco, this is my goto for synths (or a prophet in the strymons, just another world, you don't know how a synth sounds until you try that), but adding the analog heat and the oto bam, now this is something else...so yeah, those two, probably next on the list... I love how pragmatic and effective Scott's layout and gear is, the right thing at the right place I guess
Keith asked Liam to make some dance remixes and he used the Moog Prodigy on it and named the mixtape Prodigy remix or something. Keith liked the name and said they should play gigs and use the name.
