3:00 there's a bridge going across the St-Lawrence in Québec City that is too low for large cruise ships to pass, so basically any medium-sized cruise ships to flag cargo ships can go all the way to Montréal, which is why the Montreal Old Port was so important historically, but from there it gets harder for any big boat to continue towards the Great Lakes..
So in short Montreal is kind of the overall stopping point for anything big.

Hi Mark, so beautiful , wide and a quiet river I love sloshing of waves and the calm atmosphere there, amazing . I cannot understand there are not bilingual signs( French and also in English). And Quebec City is really dissimilar to another cities in Canada I could see. It looks like central european cities with many old houses, streets and sights. Thank you for this nice video. Take care. I'm glad you are enjoying the province of Québec :D
Also in Montréal 2/3 of the population are bilingual. 14% speak French solely. "Baignade interdite" means No bathing allowed 😂
"Arrêt" means stop. It is kind of weird since in France their stop signs just say stop. It's because the Quebecers are dedicated to not using english that much in their French compared to France.

  • @mrblack9237
    @mrblack9237 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I would just point out that the whole Separation Movement is very generational. People 60 years old+ here have been living in a very different Political Climate, they experienced the economic disparity between the french speaking population (including the Irish because of Catholicism) and the english-speaking minority (think West-Island in Montreal) which dominated the Higher Ranks of the Industries & manufactures of Montreal.
You have to keep in mind that back then Montreal had been the Economic Capital of Canada up until 1950-60, and that the french speaking population represented 1/4 of Canada's population. There was also no access to University in french, so these generations that voted in the Referendums were the ones that lived the
"Quiet Revolution" (from around 1960) ; removing the influence of the Church in politics and schools, creating the Education System we have now including francophone Universities, creating Hydro-Québec by buying a multitude of English-Owned Hydroelectric Companies, and so much more.
So I can understand their point of view,
But just by looking at the political results of Federal Elections you can see the changes with time.
Its the ying and yang basically, there had to be something done, then came a lot of changes, and now it is settling down.
Sadly a lot of people in Canada think that we hate them, but it was always just about our situation and our own culture.
I find it amazing that you came to that conclusion on your own and it tells a lot about your open-mindedness 👍
(Sorry for spelling, english is my second language 😉)

There are 2 panels written in French, first one of the top "BAIGNADE INTERDITE" "BATH PROHIBITED", on the left side the sign, destined for people who cannot read the French, represents a man swimming but bared by a red line which means forbidden. Hi Mark! This episode of your trip is the most surprising for me. Of course, I've heard about the province of Canada speaking France. But almost half of Quebec people want to leave Canada, it's really unexpected news. I agree with you that a nation can choose own ways. But it's a highly controversial issue. That to do with another half, don't want the independence? It's too complicated! See you in the next episode.

Hi Mark! In this episode, I can feel a paradox between traditional geopolitics and the issue of self-determination. As a typical Canadian, you would not really appreciate the separation from Canada as a fact-the seaports are often vital important to a country from the viewpoint of geopolitics; but as a modern person who receives high education, you would may be somewhat sympathy for some versions of national self-determination. As you know, empowerment and self rule have been with a sense of moral priority in the current world.
I think you would feel much pressure in dealing with the situation if you were the Prime Minister. Do you remember the tears of Queen Elizabeth II when she heard Scotland voted to still stay in British?

Part of the population of Catalonia also wants that, although as far as I know, the reasons are different, I hope that doesn't happen in my country. Imagine how small Spain is compared to Canada and both Basques and Catalans someday separate from Spain,
    we would almost disappear...ha,ha,ha

I've met a few people from Quebec who moved to Alberta for work and needed to learn English. To be honest, I'm not sure to what extent French culture is disappearing, but I think people in Quebec are concerned about that.
