Mais je dois te recommander fortement d'aller visiter le Bas-St-Laurent et la Gaspésie. C'est juste fabuleux! Le Québec et le Canada sont né en bordure du fleuve St-Laurent et c'est en voyageant dans ces régions qu'on en saisi toute la majestuosité de cette aventure des francophones en terre d'Amérique! The reason why this church looks different is because it is a Protestant church. The Eastern Townships were historically settled by British loyalists who fled the US after their revolution, and they built up their churches in the Anglican style, not the Catholic style. This is also why many cities, towns and villages in the region have English sounding names (e.g. Granby, Sherbooke, Shefford, Compton, Stanstead, Orford etc.) There is even a small English-language university (Bishop's University) in the Sherbooke area.
Also, as time passes some churches go bancrupt and the buildings end up being sold, not sure if that's the case here though. Usually, the graveyard has to continue to allow public access.
Today, the population's composition has shifted. The descendants of loyalists are a small fraction of the region's population. Protestant churches are often converted into studios, private homes or community centers. In fact, there is a church converted into a home on rue Shefford.
@@Justin-df9ev I disagree. Most Anglos moved out of the Eastern Township like they also mostly moved out of Montreal. You cannot be assimilated if you refuse to learn the language of the majority.

My dad is from Quebec and my dad's whole family still lives there. I was born in Ontario. When I have gone to Quebec (I'm not huge on city life) I didn't leave Montreal with the same feeling as I did with Quebec city. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed parts of Montréal, but Quebec city was almost magical for me. My family all live in Sherbrook Quebec, but they were all born and raised in the small village of lac frontiere.
This was a great episode Dan. I really enjoyed every minute of it and seeing the Eastern Townships. Looks like your mom also enjoyed it. The music you put to it was great. Awesome that you visited Knowlton. I stayed in Knowlton when visiting the Historical Society there doing genealogy from New Hampshire. Interesting mixture of French and English and a diner there made me think of one at home.

It used to be in Montérégie, but now it is in Estrie/Cantons-de-l'est/Eastern Townships (You can find this information on the french wikipedia pages). Therefore, you kind of did and did not visit Montérégie. Culturally, Granby is much closer to Estrie/Cantons-de-l'est/Eastern Townships than Montérégie. As others have pointed out, there are many great places to visit in Montérégie. (Sorry if this seems like a sharp reply, I just wanted to point this out)

You need to come for a proper fall colors, sunflowers, pumpkin patch and apple picking adventure on the south shore! I'm in Mont-Saint-Hilaire, just 30 minutes out from Jacques-Cartier bridge, I don't mind driving you around the Richelieu Valley, lots of history and many cute scenic places to visit!

My mom grew up in Knowlton and both my grandfather and uncle continue to live there. My grandfather is the president of the Brome county museum and was quite an active member of the Knowlton golf club. It's interesting seeing Knowlton and Bromont being portrayed on TH-cam since they are a second home to me.
those church are more Loyalist church... anglican if you wish... they're beautiful! Cantons de l'Est in English is Eastern township... many American during the war moved there and there's also a lot of Scottish descendant... as far as I know! So a lot of English influence there even if it's French. What he says about the area is true, it was the Champlain sea way back when... but it's true for all of the Montérégie (the South-Shore and more) of Montréal... I'm in the South-West of Québec, near the border of Ontario... and it was the Champlain Sea as well... it made for a rich soil for farming and gardening...

I could suggest Acadie in the Maritimes, mostly NB and NS, but if you do not understand French, you will not be able to catch the subtle (or not so subtle) differences between Acadian and Quebec French. Nevertheless, the history of the Acadians is distinct and compelling. We have close cousins in Louisiana and when I travelled there, I felt as if I was home!

You need to visit Mont Tremblanc , St Agathe des Monts , Val David and Morin Heights , all have a vibrant bi lingual population , you haven't seen Quebec till you've been in the Laurentides mountains

It's the United Church as you probably guess yourself! It's common (at least to my knowledge) that the lodging quarters are attached to the church for the United Church I know! I might be wrong, I'm Catholic! 🙂

Eastern townships is well known for agriculture because of its micro climate : wine , cheese , apple , all vegetables and fruits . Ski area and spa . Look for Hovey Manor on Massawipi lake . One of the best manor in the world and cuisine . The Abbaye St Benoit has won the best blue cheese in the world .... You also have lavender fields like in France . There are quite better food than poutine ... Quebec chefs are very creative and well known for their healthy cuisine , using regional products . Next time , visite a vineyards ( Dunham area ) and climb Owl's head mountain for a view on lake Champlain .... I don't think your tour guide has some knowledge of that area ... sorry for his English level which I consider very basic .

you really need to visit the Charlevoix or/and Gaspésie region before winter. You will not believe these landscapes exists in the East.

Try visiting other cities on the south shore. Saint-bruno, st-hubert, longueuil, marieville, chambly, carignan, brossard, etc.

I grew up in Illinois. My 3X Great Grandfather came here from Quebec. I'm directly descended from some of the original settlers of Quebec.

Yes, at least it was once upon a time! Its majorly Québecois now, but still has a decent amount of anglophones. Lovely region, I love it here :)
