Depending on the trains speed, it can take time to stop the train. It doesn't help that people cross them when activated and some car drivers smash through the barriers on level crossings

People simply don't know that a train needs several hundred meters to stop. An express train even needs around 1 to 2 kilometers. That's not comparable to a car or truck. If one of them gets hit, there's nothing left to do. People are careless or just plain stupid, trying to cross the tracks when the light is red and the barrier is closed. Their own lives don't seem to be worth anything. The train driver is the one who suffers most.

Meanwhile the driver has an experience he will never forget, will have thrown the emergency brake in in most of the cases. Likely caused major delays, probably got relieved at the next possible location because he no longer felt fit to drive so the train may have had to terminate its service.

The hidden mistake almost got me at a road crossing. A long HGV was stopped on a red light at a pedestrian crossing. Rather than wait for the green man, I decided to cross. The long HGV had hidden from my view a fast travelling car in the second lane that came so close to clipping me I felt the rush of wind behind me.

There are already security guards that are supposed to protect people in these situations. Unfortunately, they are often negligent. Public transport is an unprofitable institution, which is aimed at moving around people who can't afford a car. Government physically can't guard every inch of highly dangerous areas. That's why all safety rules and protocols are issued. If certain people can't and don't want to comply with these rules, it's their fault they lose their lives. It's harsh, but it's true. It's simple natural selection. Safety rules are taught to everybody since childhood. You don't comply - you deal with the consequences.
