It actually pushes beyond the limits of the Famicom haha. MegaTen 2 had its own soundchip on the cart, which allowed for the more layered and grungey feel of the OST. I don't know what possessed Atlus to do that at the time, but holy shit did it turn out great.
Namco, the ones who published Megami I and II originally, were the ones who made the sound chip. They could afford to do so since they were on good terms with the Famicom’s manufacturer, Nintendo. Unlike the American NES, the Japanese Famicom had the ability to customize the soundchip.
