Thanks for this video. My dad downloaded the original Quake Done Quick on his work computer back when I was a kid, when all my friends/family and I were all playing a lot of Quake. It was the first time we'd ever heard of speedrunning and the most mind blowing thing we'd ever seen. It will always be one of my favourite moments in the history of gaming ❤️
QDQ was a lot of people's intro to speedrunning. The guys who did the original were way beyond talented and … I'm so floored by the current play I'm just speechless. I was never even remotely approaching "good" at the game casually. To speedrun it? Yikes. It managed to instill a love of speedrunning in me that continues to this day, but I'm not going to ever be more than a spectator.
I tried so hard to get on the QdQ team back in the day. Every time I submitted a run it was immediately demolished by one of the better players. I wish I had the dedication to get better at speedrunning. At least they gave me a "participation" award and put me in the credits for Scourge done Slick, lol. Quake speedrunning has and will always be incredibly satisfying to watch. Thanks for your detailed breakdowns. Your channel is awesome.
there's a special place in my heart for qdq because when i was in high school, with 28.8k internet, no cable, and no way to stream videos, they were something i could watch while eating snacks when i got home from school. they blew my mind every time i watched them, and it felt so cozy, like watching an older sibling play games
Great video! The movement from these runners is just beautiful. Hard to keep up with QDQ projects when a lot of us that watched the first releases when they came out are in our 40s now. =)
It's so neat to hear from one of the original Quake Done Quick runners. This was a part of my childhood, I've never forgotten the amazement of those speed runs and I used to watch them over and over. I love your explanations of some of the subtlety of what we are witnessing on your channel. Thank you for doing your videos, and your runs are still remembered :)
I suspect that the more recent QDQ videos are underrated simply because they are so hard for a newcomer to follow. So I massively appreciate these videos that replay the runs in slow motion and explan what is happening.
In my world, speed running started with Quake (QuakeDoneQuick). I played console fighting games and some side scrollers but min/maxing games never made sense to me until I played Quake and saw the speed running that came out of that.
I always love seeing the E4M3 optimisations. I spent months in this map back in the day teaching myself to bunny hop and rocket boost, and I remember watching your demo back in 2006 and revisiting the map to try and copy some of your movements. A speedrunner I will never be, but it's always mindblowing to see these talented and dedicated people shaving little bits of time off!
Thanks mate, for helping me appreciate the depth of that beautiful series of demos. You even answered a question I didn't know: that they carry over stats from levels.
I'was q3a player, i just played the 1st version like a noob, one time to have a look on the origine of what i liked so much to play. I just watched few of your video, and it's a real plaisure to discover this 1st game i missed, and see how far players push the limit still. Even 20years later. Your video are very well made, the narration is damn good. It's a good video to discover & enjoy a game never played. Great job dude, you seem to be the Wirtual of quake ! (without music :p)
I remember getting one QDQ or another in video format on a magazine cover disk, and that would have been reasonably near to the original game's release. Amazing to hear people kept chipping away at and renewing the project.
I used to love watching Quake Done Quick/Quicker/Quickest, and completely missed that video dropping in 2020! Happy to find it via you now, and love hearing your insights as always, makes me appreciate the skill displayed even more than I otherwise would have, as someone who has never tried speedrunning Quake myself.
There are Q1 maps that I still take longer than this entire run to bumble my way through and I've been into it since I got the demo as soon as it was available.
I wonder where those legends are now. Do they still speedrun? Do they know they've created something timeless, and important not only for Quake, but speedrunning as a whole?
I appreciate the amount of work and dedication. Thx for making it accessible for me. But now I wanna know more, hear some live commentary of the runners or something 😀
Very cool commentary, and the breaking down and illustrating those things eg the narrow window things are super cool. I remember once encountering the lightning bug on END at the conclusion of a NH all of quake personal best attempt. I think I panicked and alerted a vore which moved off its spawner. I had a moan and Stubby listened and ending up winning a Nolan for it later :)
I wonder what the monsters think. "Im a badass dude with a grenade launcher in one hand and a chainsaw in the other, nothing will get past me!" Ten seconds later 30 of his friends are dead, his enemy has gone through the portal and then he gets a bunch of nails to the face in the intermission.
While quite a different kind of achievement, I would enjoy a video covering Jukspa's Tool Assisted Speedrun of Quake and whether, perhaps, there is some potential for a new and improved TAS.
Hardware evolved as well. These new records are not being played on Pentium 233mhz computers with standard 2 button ball mouse with a 14inch crt monitor.
I should watch Quake demos slowed down. I like watching Doom as well but I can see what is going on much easier at full speed. With Quake it's much harder!
And to think they recently discovered an exploit with thunderbolt that allows them to kill some enemies out of bounds or out of reach, literally saving aprox 23 seconds on final boss, so i wonder if anyone will try to use that bug on an actual run, considerig how incredibly difficult it is to use, but also, the benefits it brings, at least on specific levels. Edit: and few minutes later they actually used such bug on this run. Cool!
Oh wow … just watching this after all this time! A couple of times I had DREAMS set it E1M4 and E1M8 … fix bug, must fix bug. Why bug not there? Bug was there … bug is back, must fix bug … 😵💫😵💫😵💫 Never did find the cause for E1M8. Adding some magic value padding to a few key structures to detect corruption ultimately made the corruption no longer happen without fixing it. Some weird structure alignment issue? Probably, but … Intel architecture doesn't have data alignment. Unless it does? Huh-I now have an idea where … huh. I now know why, not that anybody cares.
I don't really get this. Surely the quickest "quake done quick" is just going to be the aggregation of all the current level records stitched together. Some of the level runs in this video might be great, but unless they are the world record for that level, there is going to be something out there even greater.
Individual level records all start with just the shotgun and limited ammo. In QDQ projects the levels are stitched together and stats (weapons, armour, health, etc) are carried over from the previous level, opening up a huge amount of possibilities. Many of these QDQ runs (especially on later levels) are 30+ seconds faster than the single-level records!

Thanks! Yep I'll never forget the first time I saw QDQ either :)

I have one of the original Quake Done Quick saved on my server. Been there for maybe 15 or more years....
So glad the history's being preserved.

Cool video, 100% runs are so complex; so easy to miss some of the insane shots or off screen kills you highlighted.
A well planned and well executed 100% demo is so satisfying to watch.
As a viewer, for me, it would be nice to always have the runner's name, time, and year somewhere on their footage
Thanks mate, for helping me appreciate the depth of that beautiful series of demos. You even answered a question I didn't know: that they carry over stats from levels.
Wow, this was very insightful. Great video showing how criminally underrated this segmented run is!
Awesome vid ~

Incredible to see how far the community has come.
I had not heard about that project. Going to search for it right now! Thanks for yet another amazing and video and insightful comments.
Love your narration style and enjoyment of the sport. Thanks!
The Quakest, Speedest, Runnest, Everest Donnest Of All Speedruns Ever.
I could watch videos like this all day

Man, 22:13 they should edit it so all the players are there.

Amazing video and showcase of skill from these players! I really enjoyed the way you broke things down and explained the nuances of the run :)

Well done!
I prefer any percent runs. Any way man you are doing a great job by making this videos. Hope to see a new one soon.

Get those people to work of flying cars right now
Thanks for all your videos! Can’t wait to see more. How about details on every secret level run? Or maybe expansion Speedruns?
Expansion runs are definitely something I want to cover. So many great demos!
Great video!
Watching and having no idea what's going on.
Ah yes well done
Thanks Connor, I would had liked if you listed time saved per demo on the introduciton of each map
Good idea. Next time!

Amazing.

What a nice guy.
When you play quake to time an egg.

Yep this was the first project to utilise the LG bug in a big way!
Thanks for the video.
Great GG, Thanks
It would be tempting to alter the entities for the intermission cams.
So good
Nice videos!
One thing I didn't understand: if the demos are recorded separately, how does health, ammo, etc gets carried over?
There are tools available to set the beginning stats (qdqstats, demtool) for each map. See the guides at speeddemosarchive.com/quake/ for more info :)
I was like number 666. Yaaaaay. :) Great video as usual.
I'd like to see that video on the LG bug to understand how that works.
love these videos.. if you have time for it.. make the slow-mo video's with host_framerate.... then you really see the details :)
I see it happened a couple of times, but ALL THE TIME please.. :)
If I render the slow-motion parts myself I use HFR. In this case though I just used the pre-made QDQ source video

So cool :0

6:04 -- he didn't even *GRAB* the Mega Health wtf... :/
"Quickest" more like "quick-ish"

Is there a complete 100% nightmare single run record? No saves. Just a straight playthrough?
There is, and it's incredible! th-cam.com/video/tJpCemX1VFI/w-d-xo.html
As a gamer I feel so much inferior compared to these guys. Also 3/4 into the video and I am gonna puke from the motion sickness.
Just for my understanding:
These are being done in God mode so the player wouldn't die?
No cheats at all! A big part of the run is planning out the routes carefully to maximise the boosts with the available health :)
@@quakespeedrunsexplained figured that out along the way. Most impressive.
Wouldn't mind a run where it has unnecessary tricks. Quake done Cool, or whatever.

Disappointed you don't show the entire runs :|
