Context, you need to watch the rest of the podcast. Atleast the part where he extensively goes into this.
And as someone who AGREES with Mike, its pretty danm easy to travel for the type of person he is talking about, young and untethered. This changes when you have families, people that depend on you, etc. If you are young and do not NEED to be in one place, go find one of the endless remote jobs out there and as long as you stick cheap travel, you'll be fine. You can live in Pakistan,India,Indonesia, Turkey, Bosnia, Egypt, (you get the point) on $1000 a month or less.
One way plane tickets to Europe/Middle East/North Africa can be found as low as $200 from a major US city. And from there you have low cost carriers, buses, trains, etc.
The one major thing Mike talks about that is a real, something that we have in certain countries that gives us a privilege to travel is our passport, passport privilege is real and unfortunate. But if you live in the 100ish countries that have decent to amazing passports, you can do this. It is all attainable in this day and age.

A few years ago a couple from America wanted to bike across the Middle East spreading love. Even the American government advised against it. They were taken hostage and murdered. Just like everyone told them they would be. Advice isn’t spreading fear most of the time it comes from real world experience. I love the fearlessandfar channel but this is itself bad advice.

I agree 100%... Traveling alone is a terrible idea. Even in groups, there are many places one should avoid while traveling. When I was a teen my father went to Peru and was kidnapped and held for ransom. He was in a group of about twenty people. About half of them managed to escape but unfortunately the other half did not.

As an American girl who traveled solo in the 80's and spent time in Lebanon and Jordan It was a tense time. A lot of people in the middle east were anti American. It's a bad idea to make yourself a target chosing to bike across the mid east.
I started in Greece. Worked and made friends along the way who were doing the same thing I was. And I made friends with tourists. You need to either be invited or know of an opportunity to teach English, work in a shop or restaurant. Absolutely don't have anything to do with drugs. Use your head and pay attention to your gut!

I have traveled the world and most of it is definitely unsafe to travel alone. There are many countries where you instantly become a target for predators whether you be male or female. Having formerly been involved in a life of crime (never hurt anyone though) I am all too aware of how predators operate. I never travel alone and even in groups I must be super aware at all times. There are certain places you should and shouldn't be as a tourist. Even in the city I currently reside in in Southern California, it is definitely not safe for tourists... it isn't even safe for locals.

Ive heard lots of stories of my fathers generation (hes 62) traveling around (especially in the US) without money, camping out at night and making money by working odd jobs from town to town...
Id be curious to know if you could do rhat nowadays. I feel like it would be harder to make money as people are much more skeptical and may not trust you.
Although as someone whos lived in bad cities, but also grew up in a small town youd definitely want to stick to small towns and places where people are generally more friendly.
Id be curious to see how it would work outside of the U.S. as well.

I once met my dad in Spain, he was there for months and I was there for a week on vacation from work and it was the first time I've travelled alone and it was so much easier than travelling with a friend, gf, wife, kids or family member.... Ate when I wanted, didn't have to be responsible for anyone or anyone else's bags, tickets, passports etc it was so different.... Since then I've got friends and family in US and Canada, in Amsterdam, Spain and Europe and I've done it alone 10 plus times and it's my favourite way to travel, just responsible for myself.

People acting like only rich people can travel have never _needed_ to travel for an important reason, even us poor people can find ways to get where we need and/or want to go... and although I've limited myself to the US and Mexico, mainly because of my fears, I've traveled and lived all over the US, from West coast to East coast, from Mexico up to Pennsylvania and have been relatively broke and what would definitely be labeled as "in poverty" most of my life. You really _don't_ need money if you're willing to be uncomfortable, and you need even less in a lot of countries in the world. Also as U.S. citizens like me or Canadians like him many of us have a lot of freedom others on this planet don't have to legally travel all over the world, we should appreciate that as a very lucky gift that not everyone is as fortunate to have.

I did it in the 80's and 90's as a single young female. Made amazing friendships and found a variety of employment options. Stayed in regal accomodations and places with dirt floors.
In Cyprus I sat in a cafe taking a break as employment seeking wasn't going well. I thought I'd have to go back to Greece but some people came to talk to me and wrote a note on a piece of paper and sent me to a gift store that hires English speakers. A Cypriot lady gave me a job and a tiny apartment above the store but she told me:. No thump thump, no boom boom or good bye! I took that to mean be quiet and don't bring any boys upstairs. No problem, great summer! Memories to last a lifetime!
When the tourist season is ending in one place its beginning somewhere else. Trust the process, you'll meet friends that know other people, you might get invited to stay with people in another country and work there.
    I highly recommend it!
