- This video is a little bit of everything. The Broken Queen releases today, and I talk about recent adventures in nature, how I plan to market the book, the stupid reason I got de-monetized (hopefully not for very long), how my goals are going, and a longer answer for "does TH-cam/Booktube sell books?" And also cat peep-meows.

@@lidiyafoxgloveauthor I forgot to say thank you for being so honest about your finances. There is of course a difference between Germany and USA, if I’d make 3000 € it would be way more I would need in a month, it still gives me a realistic idea what an indie author might be able to earn.
I don’t know if it’s a cultural difference, but only recently and with most creators being from the USA, have I also started to talk openly about expenses and income with friends and family and this kind of open financial talk is still new but very reassuring and refreshing.
Everybody needs money to survive and we should stop demonising talking about and saying “I need money” as if it’s greedy wanting to live and not only survive.
@@sophiemichel8045 3000 USD is admittedly very low here as well and would be very difficult in most of the cities. I don't know very many people who live on 3000 a month as the primary or only household income (nor would I try it myself without a lot of savings).
But either way I am a big believer in being transparent about money in general.

I must say I was one of those purchases of Doll girl meets dead guy I needed the rest of the story, so I bought it that day along with uh the sorcerer's concubine and pre-ordered the broken queen which I can't wait to read. I'm now invested in this world lol. I also love your content even though I am not trying to be an author I am just a huge fan of stories. Also the kitties are adorable with great names 💜

I love the variety of cat voices! I used to call Oskar my little dinosaur because he had this little conversational squawk that just felt like a baby dinosaur vibe (not that I've been around a lot of baby dinosaurs). Most of our cats have had lower voices so the little squeaks and trills of Reinhard and Coppelia are cracking me up. Goat voices sounds sooo cute

Marketing: Research bloggers and booktubers who cover books in your genre, offer an author interview. You can also give talks at local schools.
That's not a bad idea but the reality is that most bloggers and booktubers with any sort of audience are so swamped that they don't even reply to messages. I *could* put out a call and see if any of them are watching and wouldn't mind participating in this experiment...but it probably won't be very realistic to a beginning author's experience. I emailed about 30-40 bloggers/influencers when Doll Girl came out and I heard back from...ZERO.
The book has sexy scenes, so no schools!

Ahmen, I absolutely understand your need for balance. I am also struggling with juggling marketing, soical media, writing...can´t imagine also having a youtube and patreon. I am actually on the autistic spectrum, so maybe that´s why. I too would rather have more time to read and play video games or just writing, getting lost in a fictional world.

I have my very first children's book that I authored and illustrated myself (I have illustrated some for others) coming out next month. I am also a busy mom and have so much going on in my day to day life that I know I haven't been able to push it out like I should. It was something i loved making, and my hope is that i can just continue to add books to my author page over time and if I just stick with it it will eventually take off a little. I mean, just a small side income would be wonderful and make it feel like pursuing this passion isn't something completely selfish. I keep thinking I should come back to TH-cam and make videos about this aspect of my life but time is so tight and it seems like i have to use what i can get for the actual art and writing! It's so hard to get time for social media promotion and connection.
Anyway...I'm loving your channel. I like to listen to you as I paint, your voice is soothing and I always feel like I'm learning something interesting even if it doesnt apply directly to me! Congratulations on the release!
It actually hasn't been that bad...my video views are usually around 50% of my subscriber count, which I think is actually pretty good! But it could get worse, so I appreciate the encouragement, because either way TH-cam definitely has its ups and downs...

"It often feels more like a burden than a gift" tell me about it! Art really is the most fulfilling thing in my life, but man, making a living out of it feels grueling sometimes!
For now I at least plan to read it on the TH-cam channel like I'm doing with Doll Girl, but it will have to wait until it's out of KU. Kickstarter might be a future option with audio books, but I don't think I have the audience yet? Especially because this is quite a long book.

I bought Doll Girl Meets Dead Guy from Smashwords following your cozy storytime video. I love spooky-cute quirky fantasy so I know this is my cup of tea. I also borrowed The Broken Queen from KU, its premise isn't up my alley the way Doll Girl's is but I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
The Broken Queen is a bit of an outlier anyway, it's sort of there to establish what the old world of kings, dragon, and old magic was like. There is a lot more quirkiness from here on out! Thank you for buying Doll Girl!

The video seemed pretty solid until I noticed you had a Lieutenant Quatro figure behind you. That elevated the whole thing just a little bit for me. A good watch.
I have a smaller Char Aznable (and the rest of the original Gundam cast) up there as well, though off screen. I try not to go too crazy with the figures but the shelves do look so nice with a few!
Congratulations. I already got it and am about a quarter through ;) It's great, you have every reason to be very proud. In Europe you can use your passport a few years over the validity for some stuff. Cutting everything off is really weird, because you don't change who you are from one day to the next...
I thought so! I was flabbergasted that they couldn't do the passport in Tennessee...it's federal? And the temporary ID is good enough to get on a domestic flight. Plus I have my last expired ID, my Maryland expired ID, my voter ID card, my social security number, my birth certificate... This was all so stupid. If they'd put it through in Tennessee I might have it by now.

I call it the Hidden Lands. The official name for it was, for ages, Arestin, but then I learned that Arestin is a dental medication sooo I just went with the Hidden Lands.
Pharmacy in general really sells the whole medical sorcery thing with the magic-sounding product names haha 😅
1000 dollars in sales from 74 books is not 1000 dollars in profit right? What is the dollar amount in clean profit per book for your case if you dont mind me asking? I wanna self publish, but i dont know what is the sweet spot is in regards of pricing. Thank you in advance for all the knowlegde share Lidiya❤❤❤
That IS about the profit, for the most part. I haven't been doing much paid advertising and all the covers & publication expenses were paid for long ago. What little paid ads I have been doing were easily covered by my wide sales, which I didn't mention because their reporting isn't as easy to get...but it's probably a pretty close equivalent.
(I should also note, this is not really 74 books. It includes books I unpublished, and earlier editions of ones I changed in some way.)

I have done rewrites on occasion, usually not just from poor performance but because my writing evolved and I had a fresh idea as to how I could revamp the story. I don't collaborate, it just doesn't suit my working style at all.
