    I just got one of these and it now has an on/off switch where the power plugs in. Also, instead of having to use the Allen wrench to adjust the laser, wing nuts are used to tighten and loosen the laser head.

    Is an air assist the same as the exhaust?

    • @Neo7CNC
      @Neo7CNC  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is not. Tha air assist is blowing air from around the nozzle. This helps minimize over burn and also helps the laser cut better by pushing the smoke out of the way of the beam. Thanks for your question.

    • @Neo7CNC
      @Neo7CNC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! One thing that I do for small parts is to make an outline job that I run before the final piece. I'll have a backer or waste board fastened down and also make sure the machine can't move. You run the outline job fist to outline the target area, then place the real target piece, set focus and then run the real parts. Hope this helps!

      Try to use a vector file or .svg. That reduces the times three folds. I'm still a newbie but thats one thing I found out when I was doing my experiments. I used a text file from photoshop as a standard image and saved another file as an svg from photoshop. The same text had different times. SVG definitely cut faster than the raster file. Since this machine took so many passes to complete some simple tasks, and did a sub-par job on etching the stainless, can a more powerful laser be retrofitted to it, or maybe it can be tweaked to perform better? Maybe a 10 watt laser would do better.

    • @Neo7CNC
      @Neo7CNC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ken. These machines aren't powerful enough to actually etch the stainless. They really only cause a color change by annealing the metal. You can't tell any difference when you feel a marked or unmarked section of the material. A fiber type laser is much better suited for actual material removal in many metals. Thanks for your comments and questions.

    • @Neo7CNC
      @Neo7CNC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You want the surface to be as flat as possible to the laser. Any deviation with bring the laser beam out of focus and that will cause your image quality to suffer.

      I've only tested the Atomstack so I can't speak to the others. I will tell you that this type of desktop laser will not truly engrave metal. It only anneals certain types of metal (stainless in my case) to cause a color change. You'd need to look at a fiber laser or similar for true metal engraving.

      Hi Russell. I've tried stainless with two different LED based desktop lasers now and the result were the same. These types of machines can only anneal the stainless (put heat into it) which causes a color change. @Neo7CNC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not strong enough to actually engrave the metals. With the painted aluminum card I showed, the laser is selectively removing the paint to create the image. On the stainless steel, it's annealing the metal to change its color to create the image. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

    Hi Dave
    Loved your video on this product and was looking for a cutter to create windows for my bespoke Lighthouse models.
    Questions:
    1. Can this laser cutter/engraver do a mixture of cut-out and engraving depth? For example, I want to make a four-pane window, and on the outside of the panes, I have a rabbit recess. Is this possible?
    2. Can google Sketchup be used for the design software?

    • @Neo7CNC
      @Neo7CNC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the kind words. 1. Are you wanting to engrave/cut acrylic for the windows? If so, I believe it should be able to etch the pane outline but I'm not sure about the rabbit. It might put too much heat into the material. Also the color (or lack of color) of the acrylic will add complexity. I can cut dark acrylic but lighter, transparent colors act differently to the laser. The small detail and rabbit you're looking for may play better with a small CNC machine. 2. I'm not a Sketchup user but if it can export any of these file types (NC, BMP, JPG, PNG, DXF) it should work.

    what is the difference between the a5 and the a5 pro?

    • @Neo7CNC
      @Neo7CNC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The A5 Pro has a slightly more powerful laser at 5.3 watts. The total power rating on the A5 is rated 20 watts where the total power rating for the A5 Pro is 40 watts. Those are the biggest differences I can find.

      LaserGRBL (free) and Lightburn ($40usd) are both fairly intuitive. For just engraving basic pictures LaserGRBL was fine. If you want to create custom engravings on the fly then I'd use Lightburn. I used Lightburn to do actual cuts as well.

    • @Neo7CNC
      @Neo7CNC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The painted aluminum worked well enough. With the stainless steel it's not strong enough to actually engrave, it's more like annealing the steel and changing its color. Thanks for watching and commenting.
