Thank you for covering a key point - proportionality. Not all grammar points need equal emphasis. Those more frequently used certainly deserve the greater amount of knowledge and practice. The less common forms shouldn't be glossed over, but maybe given less exposure.
As the students go through their English course, the grammar structures they should learn (according to the coursebook at least) gets more and more complex, and sometimes I don't feel they need them so much, so I focus on vocabulary and speaking activities. There's a specific group of mine that tends to go really off topic a lot of the times, but keep speaking English. Is it okay to go off topic and let them practice like that if they don't need this grammar ou complex topics so much?
