  • Friendly locals invites us to their house & village - Sarawak Malaysia
Previous road trip video ($80 village Airbnb) ➡ • $80 Village Airbnb In ...
We made a quick stop for coffee in a small rural town in Sarawak Malaysia, when we got invited by some locals. They wanted to show us their village and offered us a ride at the back of their pick-up truck. What sounds like an adventure quickly turned into a fun trip that showed the great Malaysian hospitality. Borneo Malaysia is special so far!

I have watched other youtubers' vlogs in other countries, when they being offered something like this, usually it will end up either getting scammed or people taking advantage on them. But here in Malaysia, you guys were 'kidnapped' by locals just to experience the great hospitality and friendliness of our people and amazingly they didn't even ask a penny!
I somehow feel proud of my fellow malaysians.

Another thing: Air ketum is originally consumed as energy booster. Think of it as the natural Red Bull (the energy drink). But taken too much, can cause you to be overstimulated / high as it has opiod properties (like consuming too much painkillers)

Man... you guys sure collect tuak along the way. 😂👍🏽
    Note about Betong:
It's named after the Betong bamboo. Betong Division used to be in Sri Aman Division (currently back to its old name - Simanggang).
The Division where an Iban leader fought against Brooke. If I remember correctly, his fort is being rebuilt/maintained.
Driving through Betong Division, you might not see much but the Ibans of this Division happens to be among the first Ibans to pursue education when Brooke took over that region and curbed headhunting. Sarawak's first chief minister was from Betong. But... as my mother said, the many educated Ibans from Betong spread out everywhere helping to build other places and forgot their own hometown. 😆
Betong Division has many longhouses rebuilt in early 1900 mainly from ironwood as the Ibans became more settled. The traditional longhouse's gallery has three section (3:11) like that one you visited.
2:26 The guys who brought you there had to ask for permission for you to come up because they're not from that longhouse. Longhouses usually have a duty roster where one person would be on duty in cases such as this. Permission is required because longhouses don't usually allow guests to come in during certain times such as a mourning period. At the end of his duty, he would have to update the chief of the day. If you watch Steve and Ivana's trip to Nanga Ukom's longhouse, every longhouse has an organisation chart.
2:50 Yes, you're correct. Real people live there. it's not very busy because many of the family members are away in other towns/cities working.
4:09 The ladies were impressed Steve knows the word 'nyamai'. 😂 In Sarawak, it's the language people know throughout even if only a few words.
4:15 In Iban that would be 'nadai ngawa' '.
6:05 Not since 1841, Steve. 😄 I would use the word "curbed" instead of actual outlawed because Brooke actually use the Ibans in his "punitive expedition" against other tribes. Headhunting eventually died out when there were no more need for such "expedition". But Tom Harrison brought it back as a way to fight against Japanese Occupation.
6:59 He is kidding with you. "Ado mbalam" (Betong Malay dialect) is not a nice phrase. Don't use it to greet others. Better use the standard Malay you have already learned.
13:05 The kids weren't kidding about the crocs. 😅

11:16 Mitragynine which is the main active ingredient in ketum drink is a psychotropic substance and is controlled under the law in Malaysia. Mitragynine is listed in the Third Schedule of the Poisons (Psychotropic Substances) Regulations, Poisons Act 1952.
According to Section 30 of the Poisons Act 1952, it is an offense to import, export, manufacture, sale, and possess such psychotropic substances.

All the Dayak tribe in Borneo were headhunter in the olden days and headhunting is when another dayak tribes attack another tribe to invaded the area for land and power and they captured some as slaves and after killing the victim they will hang the head at the verandah as trophy but they don't hunt the head of tourists..when Sir James Brooke became the raja of sarawak in the 18th century he put a stop to headhunting and he divided and made boundaries to all the lands between the tribes and told them to make peace with each other.. Christianity was brought in and all the skull was Baptist by the priest and was given a Christian burial but some are still pagan kept the skull to this day as a respect to their ancestors

A little misconception about headhunting. The skulls are from the enemies that they killed in combat. It is kept to "placate" the fallen warrior. Head hunting is not done willy nilly as many are lead to believe. It is believed that the skulls are kept to "take care" of the fallen warriors so they don't seek revenge during their afterlife.
Do confirm with the locals on the actual history of the practice. It makes a very interesting conversation.

Hi Ken and everyone 👋 wow the experience to the local village was priceless , how nice and hospitable of them 👍🏻 ‘air ketum ‘ is from a plant, they boiled the leaves (not sure how or maybe few ingredients added) normally villagers that work at paddy field or farmers would drink it for energy , fatigueness or body aching but not to be taken too much , you might get dizzy or drunk I supposed...I’m not an expert 😅😂 and people tend to misuse just to get high , can be addictive too 😅 well there’s always pro and con 👍🏻 some take it for medical purpose and has been used ever since..

LOL! He gave you Ketum!!! It is a banned substance in Malaysia, Thailand and a dozen other countries. But a very common recreational drink in small kampungs where the cops don't look. Dealers can be jailed up to 4 years and fined RM10000 if caught. It would be wise not to post it online for everyone to see the next time you drink it...

Just a note lest you offend a local out of ignorance: "Pointing, especially with one's right hand, is considered to be poor manners. If you need to point to someone or something, use your right thumb with your four fingers folded underneath."
