  • My first time in rural Borneo Malaysia was full with surprises
First road trip video ➡ • We Started A Road Trip...
The goal of the Borneo Malaysia road trip was to also explore rural parts of the Sarawak state. So, lets go to places where the usual tourists don’t end up. Rural Borneo Malaysia really surprised me in a positive way…

I am Ken Abroad, a full-time traveler traveling southeast Asia. It is my goal here on the channel to visit every country in southeast Asia and bring you along the journey.
You won’t see many tourist places in my videos, I rather like to show the “real” sides of each country in my videos. Where do the local people go to eat? Where do they hang out? How do the locals travel through the country? Stuff like that.

    10:50 - Siapa Tu? = Who's there?
    11:03 - Saya Takut = I am scared.
12:15 - Kau Penyamun ka? = Are you bandits?
12:20 - Haa, tau pun cakap Melayu = You can speak Malay
    12:28 - Owh, Jauh = That's very far.
    12:35 - Saya ingat kamu penyamun = I thought you're bandits.
    12:43 - Tak boleh = Cannot

@ 9:00 I strongly advise that you guys don't roam around in the jungle or even a plantation like that, especially without a local to accompany you, not primarily because of some misunderstanding that you may have like what you had there with the terrified lady, but more because there had been cases where someone got shot by someone else (someone else being own friend, and even own husband, true story, not made up!) because the someone was thought to be a wild animal moving about behind the trees and bushes, like a wild boar 🐗 etc. So stay safe guys!

Awesome adventure with Steve to that "jungle" where there are sugar cane plants and young oil palm trees. That local lady is scared of you guys, thinking you both are bandits/robbers. Words used by her "takut" = scare, "penyamun" = bandit, "tak boleh" = cannot...

Not sure its a good idea walking through land when you do not know who owns it, someone may try to protect it from you. The girl was scared. I think the Tuak you tried is a commercial product, traditional Tuak would not be quite so clear. It is very good though. The Anna Rais Bidayu longhouse is a more touristy type of longhouse. Longhouses are usually rated or described by the number of doors. A visit to a real longhouse needs the permission of the head man, we had a 1 hour longboat ride and a walk through the rainforest, when we visited an Iban longhouse. You need to take gifts for the people, like cigarettesfor the adults and sweets for the children. We have done that in the past, fired the poison blowpipe and the short bow. It was very special.

Almost every village has a small grocery shop to cater for the villagers' needs. That is a valuable traditional bag. We call the big one- Juah and the smaller one -Lumok. I being a bidayuh tribe only has one as a souvenir from my late grandmother. Only the older generations like that old grandmother knows how to make it so please keep it properly as it is a treasure. Also hard to find in any souvenir shops.
In Sarawak there are still a lot of longhouses along the pan borneo highway. The ibans still live in longhouses. Wow you also bought some tuak.

Goodness me you walked into someones private land and the owner doesn't know why you are there. How frightening perhaps!
    I know you don't deliberately be disrespectful......but!

If you can, try to bring someone...maybe one person from that kampung before roaming around. I mean, just for communication and safety purposes. Have a nice travel guys.

I agree about getting a local to accompany you. The lady was worried for her safety; that’s understandable.
