Please share this video like wildfire, everybody. The more people see this movie the more likely we'll see Alita's journey continue in a sequel. And when you're all done here, consider also checking out the review by MB. He brought up some great points, too. th-cam.com/video/iWwHtMAj_pI/w-d-xo.html

Hi Nick, I just wanted to say that I really enjoy your content, I seem to like alot of the same things as you do. I am also on the autism spectrum myself and I can really relate to you. I especially like lego rewind since i'm a collector. I'm also writing sci fi story, Imagine Steven universe with Battle angel Alita and just a touch of Black panther. Anyhow, I'm getting of track. The way you make your videos just feels right. I guess what I'm trying to say is.. I've met some different people on the spectrum, but you sound and act the most like me. And I just wanted to say: Thank you for being you.... Wow that sounded better in my mind. Nevermind I said that. Hope to see more of you, maybe when my story is finished and out there we could maybe.... do a crossover ?...
      Probably not.

respectful with the source material, maintained the distinctive look of characters, style and genre, well acted, cool VFXs... is by no means an oscar contender... but goddamn it is it a good adaptation!
is this movie the starting point of a new hollywood tendency? changing superheroes movies for anime/manga movies? i don't know... but as long as they do it like this i'm ok, hope they never do a DBE again.

“That unfiltered ugly rawness is why we like it. It’s not a bug, it’s a feature.” Well said. Lots of critics say the storyline is convoluted, mess and all over the place but to me it exactly the opposite. The chaos is what give life to its world building. There’s no straight line, instead you move like pinball toward the ‘goal’. Plus from the beginning Alita never give the viewers the goal to begin with. She wakes up a clean slate and journey to find herself. That sequel-bait is part of her path as she moves along. She wasn’t forced to defeat Nova, it’s her choice.

    • @NickonPlanetRipple
      @NickonPlanetRipple  6 ปีที่แล้ว +54

Exactly. We're just feeling our way around her world with her. They could've made Ido the audience surrogate observing her, but SHE'S the audience surrogate, we see the messed up world through her perspective, her eyes, and that filter is intense.

i waited 25 years for this movie.
    twenty. five. years.
    a quarter of a century.
and, oh. it was *worth* it.
a quick comment on your "scrapyard too clean" moment: in the manga, the scrapyard is located at the border between kansas and missouri. but Cameron picked up on the fact that zalem, (spoiler!) is the base of a space elevator and so, as such, needs to be located near the equator. thus the zalem in this movie is located near where Panama City is. so Rodriguez took that idea and brightened the color palette with latin american color schemes. thus, the city seems less gritty than the manga. i mean, let's face it: latin american colors are far more bright and vibrant than anything kansas city has to offer.
    Σd(・ε・´d)★

    • @Quickshot0
      @Quickshot0 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

That's interesting, and equator type positions make sense for a space elevator yeah. Those are the easiest to do for sure. Though technically you'd actually end up more towards Ecuador or so then Panama to be truly on the equator, it's still Latin America though so it changes nothing. Though getting out of Panama means you don't have to be close to a sea and can find some drier areas more easily as well. Which probably helps keep the setting look a bit more the same climate wise.
Though if one wants to be 'really' technical on it, we've since evolved our ideas on space elevators a bit. And it's possible to offset them to a moderate level if you really wanted to for some reason. It does mean the cable has to be even stronger then the ridiculous level of strength it already needs. And you really need the ground link then to keep things in position, else obviously the floating end would swing towards the equator once unhooked. Which could have some painful catastrophic effects if that's a long ways off.

I hope and pray Alita does well not only as a film, but I hope the Manga and Anime spread, too. It is about time that the film industry in America gets influenced by Japanese media and storytelling. That way, Anime and Manga adaptations can keep what made them so good, and not be numbed down for people who don't know art when they see it.
We NEED more films like Alita, ones that try something new and different, along with directors and writers who care deeply for the source material.

Alita Battle Angel. It is not just a movie folks. It's a journey. A journey that you yourself are probably still going on.
I went to see the movie with ABSOLUTELY ZERO KNOWLEDGE WHATSOEVER ABOUT 'BATTLE ANGEL ALITA' (The manga and anime) and it's universe. Heck, I only know about the movie because it popped up in my Facebook feed. I didn't even know anything about it.
But upon watching it to the end, the movie sparks crazy amount of fun and endless inspiration. The storyline, the settings, the portrayal of the movie, albeit being somewhat rushed (to me anyway) it is pure beauty. Everything went extremely smooth (The sequel baiting works too, in my opinion)
But what captures me the most is how the movie is closely relatable to life. We are born in this world as a clean slate and we journeyed our way in this world, learning, winning, failing, breaking and emerging stronger. We had dreams, we have lessons. We have ambitions and goals. We have love interest. Heck I even cried straight during the cable scene. We grow up. We emerged stronger, more resilient, and more experienced than we used to be before. This movie has a very deep relation to life. Excellent movie.
Really want to have the sequels to this movie.

I find it tremendously hypocritical of critics to shame Alita for having a shallow plot and leading up to a sequel, when Marvel superhero movies don't get the same treatment when they use a shallow plot to drive the action. And these movies don't just lead up to a sequel, they place themselves within a messy web of intertwined plots across franchises. I never see movies more than twice in theaters, however for just how well this movie was made I had to go see it again. You mentioned how bias you are about this movie and how this review definitely reflects that, to which, I think that's how a good, true review should be. I rather know and learn from the review of someone who already understands and knows this universe to get a good comparison from the original. I imagine most people who knew something about Alita before this movie will/have probably loved it, and for those who I've noticed only mentioning the eyes being a little bit off putting, I'm sure a sequel will address any oddities and will be better than the first. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with the eyes, they did an amazing job and from many sources of what I've read online, there are 9 million polygons in just one of Alita's iris... It really shows how much effort and detail they put into this character for the big screen and I love it so much.

Saw the movie today and you can feel the care and passion went into this movie. While you talked a lot about the details and the movie really did follow pretty closely too me they nailed the central theme: who are you? What's your place in this life? What defines you? It nailed all those points and I think people are more open to this kind of story due to all the super hero movies if the past decade. My favorite line is when Hugo said "your the most human person I know" just dang that hit me hard.

If a sequel does get made, I want to see it cover the Zapan's Revenge arc.

      I has to be.
They've set up Zapan's arc so well with the face-tearing and all. Plus in the final scene we can clearly see that she got rid of her berserker body and his using a more modest motorball one.
All the pieces are in place to get Volume 4, 5 and maybe the beginning of 6 as a cliffhanger as the sequel. I can't wait for it.

Seeing how they skipped her motorball arc, I'm hoping we'd at least get to see some flashbacks and most importantly, Jashugan. He's too awesome to be left out like that.
I like how even in Zapan's arc it sets up Nova as series "villain", it doesn't polarise him and say "here's the biggest evil, go take him down" but it's just that a lot of things go wrong is caused by him... accidentally. He's not malicious, he just does thing "FOR SCIENCE". He doesn't even know what's going to happen from doing that to Gally's berserker body and that's why I love him - he's just crazy.
A shame his character is toned down a fair bit, I hope we get to see his hammy side in future film if we ever get one.

Why does a movie need to tie up every loose end? If I could tie up every loose end in my life every day, that'd be amazing, but that would be a very boring life. Setting up for events that will occur after the movie, whether there is a second movie or not, makes it feel like there is a universe outside of what we see, it makes it feel like the world is alive. Time moves on, the characters move on. They're still going somewhere. We're seeing a snippit out of a character's life, not the entire history of the universe. This also fuels the imagination, as it gives things to speculate on and about, even if no answer will ever come. It is something that I found to be beautiful in many French movies which are often open-ended. Many movies I've seen that simply tie everything up just makes me go "and then nothing ever happened ever again. The end." And on top of that, not every loose end needs to be tied up in the sequels, or ever. There's plenty of myseries in our lives that we'll never solve, why do movie characters need to be any different? Of course, loose ends can be annoying because you don't know the answer, we all strive for an answer, however I feel like people have just gotten too lazy to imagine things of their own, and that's simply... sad. So it's good to hear this movie dares to tease. But, yeah. I think that's it for my rant.
Good review and insights as always, Nick!

    • @Chan-qk9eh
      @Chan-qk9eh 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Tying up loose ends is just nice. You don’t want to always be left hanging, you want the character ark to be complete and/or the characters moving on to the next chapter of their life.
You want to see Loki, that we first saw as that hungry child always trying to gain his fathers approval and was always in the shadow of the confident Thor and who found out he was adopted finally accept himself and die protecting the one he loathed.
You want to see iron man, that started off as an egotistical arms dealer that couldn’t care one bit about another persons life and would easily use up 10 human shields give up his life, now so much stronger.
You want to see Steve Rogers, originally the small kid from Brooklyn that could barely stand up against the pathetic school bully standing up against the strongest creature in the galaxy and not only that, LEADING an army of thousands and then finally getting to be old and achieving that dream.
It’s about tying up the first ‘big’ phase and chapter in MCU history and opening up to another. Life isn’t always being tidied up but at the end, in order to get a job and start your life in the real world, you have to pack up your college/high school suitcases.

I have been posting your first Alita video everywhere people are talking about this movie. Your stuff on the topic is just that good.
On the movie itself: I forgot, "never trust a trailer." But I did, and I walked into this movie expecting to give it 5 out 5 for visuals and 0 of 5 for mutilating the plot of my favorite Cyberpunk story of all time.
I walked out, 8 of 10 total. Jezus. Cam and Rod somehow managed to hit EVERY SINGLE high point in the first 3 volumes of the Japanese manga (comic book), even if they had to cram in exposition and suffer some really melodramatic dialogue in the process.
At first, a lot of the set up left a bad taste in my mouth, but as the movie progressed, I started to see how Cameron's interpretation of the source material was fitting together to tell the story. I saw new takes on loved and hated characters, and while some of the new takes fell flat (Hugo), others I was expecting to fall flat instead stood up proud (Vector)!
All in all, the most successful attempt at a manga to live action film I've ever experienced... Flaws and all.

Speaking from someone who has barely any knowledge about Alita besides the fact that it's a manga, I think one of the strenghts of this movie (saw it yesterday si it's quite fresh on my mind) is that it was made for both types of people : the fans and the people who had no idea of what it was.
There are so many examples of media products that are made only for a specific target that seeing stuff made for both is kind of rare.
It's quite a marvel to see so many recent movies doing this thing like Aquaman, Into the Spiderverse, Alita and (hopefully) the next Lego Movie.
This is also why I think Insomniac's Spider-man game is one of the best games of last year, it's that perfect blend that you can enjoy in any shape or form.

I've recently started reading the Battle Angel manga. I've been really enjoying it for the reasons you've laid out in this video, Nick. Sadly, because college loves to constantly get in the way of any enjoyment I want to pursue in my life, I've held off on seeing this movie until Tuesday, a day I don't go to school on. Hearing that this movie is sincere to its source material is great too, since we need more movie adaptations to do that. That's one of the reasons I love the Marvel Cinematic Universe films so much. Say what you want about them, but I get the feeling that the people working on those movies really care about what they're making. To me, one of the worst things an adaptation can be is afraid or cynical of what they're adapting. That's why I despise Dragon Ball Evolution so much. They took everything Dragon Ball was known for, and spat in its face. It's unrecognizable. Seeing that Alita has avoided this trapping is fantastic. I hope this movie does well enough to justify a sequel. By then, I should be a bigger fan than I am now, since I'm only on Volume 7 of the manga.
Glad to hear you enjoyed the movie as much as you did, Nick.

Initially, I thought that some of the acting was rough, specifically around Hugo and his relationship with Alita. I'm still not totally sold on his character, but after thinking about it more, I agree 100% with what you had to say. They wanted it to feel cringey and even slightly creepy, that's the point. Rushed teen love. I've been there and relate a lot to it. The more and more I think about this movie, the more and more I love it, even if it does definitely have some faults. A few months ago I had no idea this was based on manga, but now after seeing it I have already spoiled myself binge-reading the Alita wiki and can't wait to get the sequel (If it comes to happen). Excellent video. It's always nice to see someone else that loves something as much as yourself.
I've wasn't as positive about this movie because I've seen too many live-action adaptations go horribly wrong. I walked out of the theater with a grin while making plans to see it again in 3D.
I was particularly pleased that they included those elements from the manga.
You were exactly right, this was a film made by fans and you can feel it when you watch it.

I totally get what you're saying about you enjoying movies that a lot of people don't like. I watched Alita and I was like: "I get this, I get what they're going for." The movie is so sincere!
And thank you for your thoughts on why the movie is being attacked critically. I'm so flabbergasted at what some people have said. To the haters: f*** your mercy!!!

DarynLuna they’re not wrong: the movie needs so much work in the writing, but on average the characters are endearing despite the melodrama and the actors do great work with a shallow, lazy screenplay

@@hellfish2309 the thing is (and Nick even said it) GUNNM is 29 years old. This is one of those incredibly important, influential works that inspired plenty of what we've seen in the last 20+ years.
Like the Wachowskis were influenced by Ghost in the Shell to make The Matrix, GUNNM's no doubt had a hand in plenty of later works... the easiest one to identify being Cameron's own Dark Angel. But yes, the strong/compelling/diverse female lead was totally a thing in Japanese writing with far more prevalence than Western counterparts back then. The mid 80s to early 90s gave us Iria, Gally (Alita/Yoko), Motoko Kusanagi/Aramaki, Deunan Knute, Leona Ozaki (Tank Police), Lt. Emma Sheen (Gundam Zeta), the Knight Sabers (Bubblegum Crisis & Crash, Rally Vincent & Minnie May Hopkins (Gunsmith Cats)... comics, anime and manga have influenced PLENTY of modern works - it's just taken a few decades to really hit Hollywood as viable stories to tell, as the industry has gotten more and more risk averse.
And as far as GUNNM, it's a completely original world. There's nothing else like it. It's a masterpiece, and there aren't many of those. You've got Berserk, GUNNM, BLAME!, Gantz, GitS, and I dunno... possibly Parasyte. I only read a bit of it when I used to get MixxZine in the mid 90s. I might even put Negima on that list, as that's a wonderful ride I took for about 10 years.

I have been waiting for your reaction ever since I saw it myself. You were the person who gave me hope for the movie after I wasn’t too impressed by the teaser - I’m glad to say that I feel the exact same way. I absolutely loved it, give or take my few critiques. I went with a friend who had never read it, and she was so immersed in it that she cried several times - I just sat there in awe, recognizing my favorite quotes and imagery and freaking out. It is amazing to see something you love so much be treated with so much respect.

I can't understand for the life of me why people have problems with movies setting up for a sequel!!! and then they also complain about a movie being too long!! and then they complain about lack of character development too ( do they even know how that comes to be?). Its like they want all the information, development and story in a predetermined time which they have approved as acceptable (probably around 2hrs) ; its absolutely ridiculous.

I saw the movie today, based on your recommendation in a sense. While I haven’t seen the OVA or read the manga, I can say from the movie alone, I want more. I want to see where the story goes, I want to see Alita grow and what things are in store for her. Also poor Hugo, the Nurse I felt like could have in a sense played a supportive aunt figure, and it bothered me how little lines she got. However the action, the story, setting. I want more dang it!

I ignored a call from my girlfriend to watch this. Very well done. I appreciate your efforts on this.
Also, just another thought: my girlfriend really enjoyed this film, but being black... it did bother her how (once again) the black female character in this, Dr. Ido’s nurse... is exactly how you said. It’s like what was the point of even having her there? It does seem like a small slap in the face to African American females. So many black females love anime, but they never really get a character they can fully identify with.
All in all, I completely agree with all you said. My two biggest issues with the film were Hugo, and Dr. Ido’s nurse.

YES! YOU MADE ANOTHER ONE! :D
Hello there! I hear you remember me^^ thank you!!
    1. I LOVE THE MOVIE!!
    2. Same thoughts on the "prejudice", I don't think I can ever watch this movie without seeing the manga overlays in certain images. Or forget the background I have with it while watching ^^
    3. Thank you for noticing Jashugan.... I have no idea why they changed him so drastically or where they're going with him now. But he has to be the one develop Alita's martial art by being the wall she crashes upon.
Now I'm thinking they move away from her improving her bodies and martial art skills and focus the story more on: memory recovery/mystery unravel and finding/losing her way in life through it.
    Just a theory.
Off to watching it for the 3rd time now^^
More later! And keep it up!! You really have a refreshing straight forward style for explaining things:)

Nick, I can really feel the love you have for this material by the way you phrased this movie review. I wish more people were that respectful when discussing a movie to not have to make a basic spoiler rant. The way you handle spoilers was awesome. For example if there isn't a way to not spoil [something about cables] then hey, don't discuss that particular part, nicely done. I appreciated the review and as someone new to the material who was turned off by the zeitgeist chatter afterwards I'll give the movie a try. I do so love manga from the 80s-90s, Bebop, Akira, GiTS, etc... Well done.

Got to see it in theaters today, and Ah! I'm still full joy! It's as wonderful as I hoped, and I love it!
You're not imagining it, the characters are well done and it's really something.
As litmus tests to how it can work for new watchers (although not remotely new to anime tropes mind you, if that matters) Neither my spouse nor my youngest brother had read anything from the Battle Angel manga, but they both absolutely loved it. They felt like it was a really solid really good action film, with a really great protagonist-- and it bloody well is!

i saw the anime years ago... right after a bad breakup... it saved my life, because Alita gave me HOPE. I survived, bought all 9 books, and well... try - still - to live by her ideals and honesty. We can relate because we're human and through the books, we get to heal and grow With her. I'd pause the anime movie during some scenes, and draw the pictures... /HUG
