  • I share my experience of fishing my first tournament of the year on the legendary Lake Guntersville. Despite a strong start, I came in 2nd place, and I believe I lost the tournament in the first hour. Join me for a detailed tournament recap as I walk you through the strategies, techniques, and gear I used.
From the Neko Rig, Carolina Rig, and Texas Rig to the soft plastic jerkbait (Fluke), I cover the various setups that helped me catch fish. 🐟 You'll also get an inside look at the types of lake structure and cover we targeted throughout the day.

You did finish second even with that rough start. Well done. You probably need to fish more events in order to be a bit more clear headed early. Great vid!❤️

Just got off the water, had a slow day myself but your mentioning of blowing up bunches of fish is good for me. I think I may do this frequently, because I do what you did in this tournament all the time. I find a school, one or two big ones, and throw something big (my glide) and seem to lose them all in minutes.
I haven't tried a hover rig or any of those finesse mid-column lures because I'm just getting into kayak/offshore fishing, but I think those suggestions are huge.
Still watching, but just wanted to say I appreciate ya. Good luck next time man! 2nd place is nothing to scoff at.

Thank you Mikey for all you do !! No matter how good you are ...no one can win em all. Here's a hot weather tip and has helped me reel in some big bass here in southern Wisconsin on highly pressured lakes. Try flipping big worms like 10 to 12 inch ole monster zooms or big Mann jelly worms. I fish a lot of slop in warm water on hot days and these things produce big bites. Ill also make short target casts into far shallow pockets and drag the worms back across and drop them in pockets. You can cover water faster to. When all else fails the slower fall rates of these worms ( even with weights ) gets reaction bites. Also adding a tail blade to senkos and stick worms can produce some numbers and bigger bass. Less resistance thru the greenery make these lures efficient. Just my humble 2 cents worth bro. Tim Nelson

Love your vids. I know you thought about doing the Opens before this year, but I think you'd do well on the ABT or maybe the NPFL as an option. You're definitely knowledgeable enough and a hammer on your own right. Tight lines!

Congrats on a great finish, not the one you wanted but good job. I found the Flex worms at Ollie's also $1.99 a pack, they have been producing for me too. Hope I can find some more. Delta craw has been good for me, along with green pumpkin.

This is an interesting strategy as most tournament anglers go to first catch a decent limit and then spend the rest of the day looking for bigger fish. Given your knowledge of Guntersville and the fact that you are confident you can catch a limit this may not be a bad plan but it does put added pressure on you if you spend the first 2 hrs and don't put a big one in the boat. Depending on the reliability of your bigger fish areas this may be a good strategy since most likely everyone els3 is doing the opposite. Also, rarely will you ever see someone win an event who has had one or more big fish come off- you just have to boat everything you hook unfortunately.

Yeah that's 100% what burned me losing those two big ones in the morning.

Losing those big ones is painful. To win an event unfortunately typically requires that you boat every fish you hook

Can’t believe how people pull up and start fishing beside people. I used to live for ledge fishing now I can’t stand it. Use all my vacations to go up north and catch smallies now.
