DIY Concrete Staining Basement Floor

- I decided to try and DIY my basement floor with a concrete stain (link below) for a flooring alternative. I couldn’t afford to epoxy the basement floor but I found this product online at www.diyconcrete.com and thought I’d give it a shot. The last thing I wanted to do was apply garage floor paint because I’ve used it before and it always turns out terribly. Getting the concrete clean enough to apply the stain was probably the hardest part for this job. Overall it worked pretty good but I could have probably done a little better job with the application of the sealer. Let me know if you have any questions and thanks for watching.
Here's the kit I got: diyconcrete.co...
Watched this video 2 months ago, and went back to it last week. Dude, you just saved me 4 to 5,000 bucks. Thanks, buddy!
Amazing! You can just e-transfer my 20% cut in savings LOLOLOLOL. I'm glad you watched and even happier that you took a minute to comment. Appreciate ya.
I’m hoping to come back in 2 months with the same news ha 🤞
We’re a nonprofit (IYA Independent Youth Advocates) assisting a church with a Childrens area, this has been so informative, thank you for being so detailed and using simple language. I’m going for it♥️
Nice! Good luck Sandra
OMG thank you so much for explaining how you do it on an interior room! Every video I’ve watched are great videos and well explained EXCEPT they have all been unfinished garages or exterior spaces! Lol, seems trivial but I’m not an expert an when you have no clue it really is the little things that can keep you from moving forward with a project like this.
My favorite DIY video thus far! I’ve been scouring TH-cam to find something to do with my concrete floors here in TX. This is the best option I’ve found. And you’re comical “ now I don’t look a full tool, just part of a tool” “ get off the pot” 😂 .. love the Canadians accents too!
Laughing makes you live longer…lol.
I appreciate you!
@@RinkVideo Indeed it does Lol ! Oh, and I meant to say the color is perfect for the desert look and the decor ya’ll chose. Beautiful 👏🏽😌
You need to make more DIY videos, entertaining and great info!
Thanks! Will do!
You are sooo underrated!!! Amazing quality video, straight forward no bs instructions and witty humour!!!
I totally agree Shin! I think I’d rather be underrated than overrated but I’m not sure…lol. Thanks for watching and glad you got a laugh. Poke around on my other vids for more high quality entertainment! Thanks again.
This is a good channel. Keep the content coming.
Thanks, will do!
Love your humor A1 & made DIY look somewhat 'easy' . The end result...Iove it. Looks like a leather hide type finish. Mop it for maintaining; boom my type of room.
AWESOME!! Definitely doing this throughout my house. Great video.
That looks awesome. I have to do my man cave floor and this seems like the way to go. I’m excited! Thank you man.
Thanks for making this video. Ive been all over the internet researching to find a way to do this at a more affordable price.
Just bought my first house and my basement is bare and this video is EXACTLY what I was looking for :)
Awesome. Congrats on the new Shack and I'm stoked that you're not painting the floor gray with garage paint!
@@RinkVideo it's funny because I have to remove some, so this video literally covered everything I need to accomplish.
This is a great DIY idea and just what I was looking for! Laughs along the way. Thank you!
Laughing keeps you young Angie! Thanks for watching ✌️
Wow, that looks amazing! I'm so glad that I found your video. I'm gonna look into Color My Ugly thanks to you, and probably do my basement just like how you did yours. Great job!
Love your content and channel - rare, real, and funny approach.
I appreciate that David! I try to keep it real so I'm glad you noticed. Thanks for watching.
Love the vid. We tested our technique with the stain in newspaper until we found our groove. At first we thought it looked like an 80’s hair salon but once you get your furniture in & a couple rugs, it really is an awesome finish. We went for a more mottled look in a dark brown.
Now I want an 80’s hair salon vibe in my house!
This is the greatest DIY channel on TH-cam. Thanks for the content
What do I owe you for the best comment ever Adam? Seriously though I appreciate that more than you know. Sometimes it sucks to put so much time into a video that hardly anyone watches. But the gratitude comes from people like you who watch and genuinely appreciate the content by simply letting me know. Respect!
@@RinkVideo I can tell you enjoy making these videos. As a hockey guy and beer drinker I thoroughly enjoy the content. You make me wish I was Canadian. I'm also married and everytime she asks me to do some kind of DIY project the first thing I do is TH-cam it. She wants to do our kitchen cabinets and has for about a year. Thanks to your honest cabinet video (which look great by the way) I told her "see, its a pain is the breezers, not gonna do it. F THAT." needless to say, we still have oak cabinets haha.
Keep up the good work, you are the man!
@@RinkVideo you'll be surprised over time how much views the video will get, with your production values and a little patience you'll get up to meaningful numbers sooner than later.
Excellent video! Canadian accent made it 10x better.
😂
I love this video I’m on my home walls now painting them, but definitely going for this exact look for my floors NICE JOB
@@bernardleejr3502 right on Bernard! It’s easy so you’ll have fun. ✌️
MY HUSBAND AND I BOUGHT OUR FIRST HOUSE AND PLAN 1 is to rip out the basement carpet! Thanks!
Love your video. Thanks. FYI, we had ordered the stain through DIY Concrete, as you suggested, and had never heard a word from them other than they had received our order. Long story short, we finally had the payment dropped thru our credit card company. Just wanted you to know. Thanks again for your videos.
Oh no way! This is terrible. I might have to take this video down? You’re the second person in a week who has had issues.
@@RinkVideo since I wrote this,my wife wrote a review on their Facebook page and two other businesses replied that they we’re having problems and they had their money but no product. Those two dug deeper and contacted the owner in Minnesota and the BBB. As of last night we all have received emails saying due too relocation and inventory they are canceling all current orders and refunding payments. So hopefully that happens. A little communication could have eased a lot of this.
hello moving and will be renting out my home so fingers crossed this comes out ok
Not bad, looks wonderful and totally doable for this DIY gal.
Ok, you convinced me, I’m in!
I just found your channel by chance and you’re very funny and enjoyable to watch.
Thank you for showing this inexpensive diy. I’ve been wanting to do this type of project for years.
Great channel! 😊👍🏼 Subbed btw
That turned out fantastic! Didn't think I needed to watch this but I love how it turned out!!
Appreciate that KB! Most people are blown away by that floor when they see it in person. Such an easy thing to do! Anyway, appreciate you watching!
I make videos myself so I know how much effort you put into making and editing this video. Great work and love the video man!
I appreciate that Kurien! Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed.
Great job! I'm going to be doing my outdoor carport area. An Italian style for my pizza making with friends. Can't wait! Thanks again
"Definitely wear a mask!" LOL like the one on top of your head? Funny guy. Fun video. Thanks for sharing.
just removed our floors and will do that in our whole house. loved it. thanks.
How did he remove the old gray epoxy?
That looks amazing!! I have an unfinished concrete laundry room floor downstairs I'm going to try this on super excited!!
Good luck!!
Hey bro, I really appreciate the video and you ranking the difficulty level of the DIY project! Great work btw! This will save many a lot of 💰
🤟aAppreciate that Edgar! Making these epic videos can be a PITA but it’s worth it when people like you take a minute to leave an encouraging comment like this. You da man!
Super informative and the steps were throughly explained! Very helpful👍🏼
Thank you so much. Planning to do this in our basement ASAP!
Looks great! Would love more videos about the house building!
Thanks Michelle, anything in particular you want to see about house building?
You did a fantastic job for a first timer. 👍🏼
Just started my house build and I too want to go this route. I hadn’t considered the water base option until seeing your video. Floors look great BTW. 👍 from me and you got a new sub. Greg
Nice Greg!! Been living with this floor for a year now and it’s super durable.
If you’re building, protect the floor with Ram Board and will make it 1000 times easier when it comes time to stain.
found this channel for the c70 video and now I’ve torn out all my carpet and prepping the slab🤣
@@TradeshowThomas Lolol we’re the same person: I look up a recipe for dinner and an hour later I’m looking for land to build an off-grid cabin. 😂

Enjoyed the way you went through the steps, very calm and humorous energy.
I'm going to frame this comment because my wife thinks I'm a spaz. LOL. Thanks for watching Art. I appreciate it.
Looks amazing!! Great job! I enjoyed watching this. I wish I had a basement lol
Glad you liked it!!
WOW this is the color I would defiantly use ☺️👏👏 turned out fantastic
Looking forward to doing my entire basement, next steps soon
Since the link is currently broken, could you tell us the name of the product or something comparable? Seems to be a A LOT of staining options around.
OMGGGG. THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE BEST DIY VIDEO! Love it! Buying my kit and “GETTING AT IT”. Thank You😂
DV! Thanks for watching! Comments like yours make it worth while to continue making these videos. ✌️
Turned out beautiful!!!
Floors turned out great!
We did ours with some stain and self-leveling bar-top. 2 years in and it's holding up just fine. Wish I had used a different color stain though. 😂
This was great to watch… you sold me the idea…
Let’s go!!!!
Ok this video was great! Thank you for posting it!
Absolutely love your video and how this turned out. Just subbed. Would love to know what color your buddy used, its more in line with the tones I have, if you wouldn’t mind finding out for me. TSM.
Well thanks so much Kylie! My buddy actually used two different colors to come up with the desired tone. I know for sure that one of the colors was “Kodiak”. He didn’t actually mix the colors but sprayed one on top of the other. I’ll see if he can remember.
Love your personality!
Thanks for the video
Thank you so much!!
That looks really nice, and also sort of gave me some ideas too.
Very cool information and so funny!! Really enjoyed it!
Thank you great deal & looks sharp was @ a buddies house he just paid $5200 to get his done 🤷🏻♂️
many of the videos show rinsing the stain with water. How do you get rid of the water? Water vac it up? I don't have drains in the room. Not like patio which is outside and you can sweep/wash the excess off into the ground.
This 100% (almost) convinced me that we will be doing this to our basement. Our sump pumps stopped and we had a flood, so we had to tear up the flooring, so this is a great, cheaper alternative to do! Do you have any suggestions for if there are small cracks, fill them in, leave them? Thanks. Subscribed and liked!
NEW SUB PARTY!!!!!! You know I think it all depends on what kind of style/look you're going for. Sometimes repairing the cracks looks worse than the crack itself. This is a decision that only you can make but maybe you could try fixing a crack in an area that isn't visible and go from there? I feel bad for your luck with the sumps quitting. Nobody needs that headache! Thanks for the support!
How long did you have to wait after the initial cleaning to apply stain? Is this a project that can be done in one day for a bedroom? Or does it require drying time between steps?
Great video! It’s been 2 years, how is it holding up? Thanks so much!!

Great video man ! Just purchased my home and wanted to do this to my floor but looks like everything is sold out 😢
Oh no way? Where do you live? You might be able to find a store that has it.
What a great personality. Lol. You must keep your other half hysterical😂😂. GREAT JOB. THANKS FOR SHARING 😂
Enjoyed your video and the finished look is awesome 👍
Thanks for watching Lawrin
Great video and inspiring. I didn’t read through all 345 comments, but I didn’t see anything posted about whether or not it’s slippery when it gets wet?
@@tgarrett3787 hey thanks for watching and reaching out. Yes it is slippery!!! Not just when wet but even with just socked feet it’s pretty slick. I wanted to do this in my garage but I would 100% put some sand or grit in the finish for a little grip. I’m sure you could find a sealer that has more traction but the matte finish I used is slippery. I should do my garage and see if I can make it grippy!
Looks amazing and great help to know! Thank you
6:00 what head(s) did you use on the floor machine for cleaning? Doing ours tomorrow, didn’t know if you used a scotch brite pad or a brush head and then sanding disc?
Scotch bright head for sure. They have green black and white and white was too soft to do anything. I think green worked the best
@@RinkVideo awesome thank you so much! I’m following your technique, except prepping the floors before framing, then re-cleaning, staining and sealing after drywall
@@willeast7985 deadly! I highly highly recommend using Ram Board (or similar product) to protect the floor until you’re done painting the drywall. It’s expensive but if you do a good job with the Ram Board you shouldn’t have to clean the floor a second time.
Any comments on the durability? We are looking at doing this on a living space with a bunch of kids.
so... this looks like its been a couple of years since you did this stain. How does the floor hold up to traffic? Do you have to redo any of it to keep it looking nice? Thanks.
That's beautiful! I love it!
Great job man
Great video, brother. I"m totally going to do this!
Nice! Let me know if you have any questions and good luck 🤙
Can you use a pressure sprayer to apply the sealer as well? Was thinking is would be more even but wasnt sure if you would get clogging.
I notice some people just spray stain and then seal it whereas some spray stain and neutralize it with baking soda and scrub the stain and rinse with water before sealing it. Does both work?
Jonny Taco is a rad name! Buddy I have no clue about the baking soda method. Never even heard of it before now.
@@RinkVideo they say you need to Neutralize the acid before sealing it. I got all my stuff plan on starting Saturday
@Jonny Taco Outdoors that's for an acid based stain. His is water based. Acid gets great results but it's time driven meaning the longer you wait to neutralize the more the color changes. Google acid based sealer.
Unlike paint that flakes and looks like crap over time - does staining concrete last forever - as in one and done - without maintenance ?
Did you need to go over the floor with paint remover for the old peeling paint or does that come up when you scrubbed with the degreaser?
Was wondering how its holding up to moving furniture around and kids playing on it, I'm building a small weekend home and we want something easy and price conscious on a slab foundation, with lots of pets and kids running in and out.??
Right here Kathryn: th-cam.com/video/HcqGyrDAe9Y/w-d-xo.html
Has anyone stained over an existing stain color on concrete before? Would love some pointers for what a color over a color may do
Love how that “Oak” color turned out!
HOw are your floors looking 2 years later? Still happy with this choice? I think this would be a great option for us!

@Rink My husband is been very resistant about this flooring because of ECHO. We had a small party in our basement for my daughter and it was so Loud with echo with the plain concrete floor that he doesn't think we can keep a concrete floor. How can we make that work? I like the look and I really do not want carpet down there. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
I’m on Team Husband here Dani. The concrete certainly causes added reverb. I have a few area carpets down which helps but my ceilings are 9’ high and I don’t have much on the walls so the sound is noticeably terrible. That said, I’m not a fan of carpet so I consider reverb to be the lesser of two evils.
Great job. Thank you for the help. I can't wait to do mine 🤠
Yeah buddy. Thanks for watching and hope it turns out for you. ✌
Question, for a basement the sealer used, will it protect from radon? Do you need to use primer? or can you clean the floor, then stain with a sprayer with a pattern, then use a sealer? Also want to use eco friendly products safe for for people and pets.
Jay! I’ll start by saying that Im no expert in radon and that you should consult a pro!
From what I understand, radon can’t penetrate concrete. When I built this house, here in Calgary, I had thought that spray foaming the basement would eliminate any concerns. But I was wrong. The City still wanted me to use a specific concrete caulking where the foundation meets the slab and then around any pipes coming through the slab. My inspection was done when it was still just original concrete so I can’t see how a sealer would make any difference. But I could be totally wrong. If you’re in the same parts as me, there’s a concrete supply store in Calgary that carry the Eco Stain called Hard Rock. They have all the colours. It’s a great store and you don’t need a contractor account.
What kind of orbital sander is that? Like is it a polisher or does it have some grit?
And do you think that sander plus a degreaser does an okay job compared to grinding the surface down with a diamond plate concrete sander? If so, that will save a TON of time!
It’s just from tool rental at Home Depot. I think they call it an orbital floor polisher? Anyway they have pads like are like 3M scotchbright in 3 different grits.
Grinding it was certainly not an option for me. Too much work. In my case the polisher worked great.
@ thanks bro!
It looks Awesome!!
Great job, highly entertaining!
Im so confused. I thought you couldn't stain sealed concrete without grinding the top surface? What about the paint you had already applied? How does it look a year later?
Going to attempt! How many square feet did you do how much did you buy and how much total did it cost you?? This looks amazing! Also, how long in-between steps do you have to wait. I have dogs and no where to put them
I love the video! But I have questions about the prep work. Did you go in before hand and smooth out or resurface any of the concrete? Or was that the base slab?
Turned out great. Informative video, thank you. Quick question: Did you have any moisture issues in your basement?
No the house was brand new at the time.
Good job young man
Do you have any information on using 2 colors in an unstructured manner (no taping off sections of the floor) or if additives such as mica powder could be used?
I do not
What kind of floor sander did you use? Best video out there for this project. Thanks!
Thank you thank you! I rented an orbital floor polisher from Home Depot and got a couple of the scrubber/sanding pads that they had for sale in the tool rental area.
Did you use the Dimabrush Concrete Prep Tool they have for rent or only the pads? Looking to do exactly what you did to a 5 year old new build basement. Thanks for the quick reply.
@@endtherow7276 just the pads. The white pads were too soft but the green ones worked great.
Thanks again. Now I’m off to rent the machine and see what happens. Cheers 😊
They are sold out! Any ideas how I can get my hands on this kit or something similar?
So when using a water based stain, do I need to clean the floor before applying the sealant?
I just bought the kit got everything cleaned and ready to stain and seal and realized they sent me supersealant wet look for outdoor concrete. No A B mix. Your sealant looks like it dried to a matte finish not gloss is that correct?
That is correct. My finish is matte.
I used 46.00 a gal black wood stain and it looks great put two coats of concrete sealer on it. Way cheaper and I'm a concrete finisher that has 33 years in
Oh man I’d love to see a photo! Matte sealer or gloss?
Hi great video. Planning on doing this to my basement soon. Question for ya, what type of sand paper did you use on the concrete sander for cleaning your floors? Thank you
Hey Jason, I rented that orbital sander from Home Depot and they basically had 3 different sanding pads. They’re kinda like scotchbrite texture. The white one was too soft so I used the black and green. Long story short: they’ll have what you need at the tool rental.
Awesome video. Is that a buffer you used to scrub the floor? What type of grit pad did you use? I heard that any acid Chlorox, Phosphoric solutions destroy the concrete. Is that true? Thank
Thanks Scott. It was a floor polisher rented from Home Depot. They basically have white, green and black scrubber pads and I found the green worked best.
As far as destroying concrete with chemicals I have no idea. 😂
@Rink I have a new built home. I am having trouble getting the concrete clean. I have been scrubbing with a firm brush and immediately shop vac. Once it completely dries, there is a light white chalk film that reappears after multiple scrubbing with clean water. I will next try to rental HD polisher. Any thoughts? Thanks.
@@scottlabak1658 same here Scott. I was reluctant to use a whole lot of water (for obvious reasons) but my buddy came over and convinced me that I wasn’t using nearly enough water to rinse it off. Needed lots of water! There is NO WAY I could have scrubbed my floor by hand so the polisher was totally worth renting for me.
@@RinkVideo Thank you! Fantastic help! I will let you know how it goes.
@Rink We(my wife and I) like the stain you used. What color is it? The Taylor guitar is cool!
Looks great, I am going to do the same thing in my basement. is this product flamable ? my hot water tank and gas furnace is fairly close to where I want to stain the floor . Thanks again Jeff
Awesome work brother, Really awesome stuff! Was wondering, what was the damage like? Roughly...? $$$,$$$.00
Thanks for watching RG. All-in was probably less than $1k including renting the floor polisher etc. probably somewhere between $509-$1000
