HUGE KITCHEN PANTRY (my makeshift pantry) DECLUTTER & ORGANIZE/ Such a big mess 🤦‍♀️

  • In this weeks decluttering and organizing video I’m going to tackle my very messy and unorganized pantry area. I don’t technically have a pantry in my home so I use my kitchen cabinets and cupboards to store any pantry type items.
I am very blessed with a ton of kitchen cabinets, drawers and cupboards so it’s not super challenging not having a pantry. Pantries don’t have any many restrictions as cabinets do but I make it work.
I tried implementing baskets into my pantry 18 months ago to keep it more organized but that just did not work for me. So I’m going back to basics and will not be using a bunch or organizational gadgets in this video.
Thanks so much for stopping by and watching my kitchen pantry declutter and organization video. I appreciate you 🤗
Congratulations to the Amazon gift card winner from last weeks video. I hope you decide into into this weeks Amazon gift card giveaway ❤️

Hi Jodi! Have you considered changing the shelf arrangements in the lower cupboard? They seem really short and deep, and not real user friendly. Maybe removing a couple of the shelves would create taller spaces for things. You are doing great! Keep up the good work. Loved the story about having the friend over and not feeling stressed about a mess.

For processed foods the best by dates don’t have to be followed so closely. If it’s within a year or two it’s probably perfectly fine.

I find it helps me to get in the habit of doing a pantry challenge once every year. I go through the pantry with the expectation of using up everything in it and don't buy anything except fresh produce for that month. I inventory what I have and choose recipes that will use it. For me, the best way to keep control of my food inventory is to do regular menu planning. I eat seasonally, and aim for zero waste, so I don't buy much in the way of processed food. Pantry staples are usually bought in bulk and I make a lot of things that most people buy (like yogurt and bread). I'm still buying a few packaged items like pasta because I don't want to bother with those. I use my freezer heavily to preserve garden produce for the winter and I can a few items, but this method works to control the pantry even if you buy everything.

I think the reason the baskets didn’t work out is bc they weren’t labeled(so everything has a place/home) & they were over stuffed! 😂 I can’t imagine how to keep a pantry tidy w out baskets? But if u find one awesome!👍🏻👍🏻 and from the looks of ur stocked pantry u may want to try a “no spend” month? Save ur cash & treat yourself to a massage jodi!! U don’t need any more candy or food!! Agreed! If things don't have a home - meaning this basket is only for chips, this is only for peanut butter etc. - then it's difficult to put things away AND you never know what you need to buy and then end up buying things you already have.

Maybe clear bins would work better. My dollar store has them, as does Walmart and Target. Even a few would make a big difference as you can see what is in the bins. That’s how my brain works anyway.

Looks great Jodi!! Those shelves in all of your cabinets can be adjusted to the height you need for whatever you are putting on them. The little tabs on the sides that they sit on can be moved to another hole to raise or lower them. Wasn’t sure if you knew that or not. You can actually remove some of the shelves in the cabinet under the open space to give you more room between them. If the width matches your other cabinets you may be able to use those shelves to create more usable store in your other cabinets. Just a thought. Also I totally forgot to enter your give away last week. Ughh. The hardest area to keep organized in my house is probably the pantry or my stockpile area. I have for to come up with a new system!

I stopped over buying by making sure I always used a shopping list. I've 'trained' all the family to complete the list when something is used up and will need replacing. it's stopped a lot of waste!

Looks great! I love the feeling after decluttering my pantry shelves! I did switch to clear OXO Pop containers over time. I love that I can see what we have and I try not to buy food we don’t usually buy, as that tends to be what gets thrown out as it expires. And you are right. Revisiting the cupboards every six months or so makes you aware of food that is close to expiration. Thanks again!

Bottom left is tuna fish, soups canned veg. It helps me keep up with stuff and I rotate supplies as I put away groceries. Well, everyone can decide where to store things but I still have a few suggestions. The area where the extra candy is store on the left side is Prime real estate and right at the level of your eyes. Since it is in a basket with holes it can go up high either in cabinent above or with overflow chips. Place items you use the most in Prime real estate area. In the upper cabinents is it possible to remove the shelf so that tall things like pop or taller bottles can go there. I would try to keep all food in the 2 side pantries and try to avoid the middle for food, just non-food wraps, paper plates. Maybe move the girls basket also to a side pantry so you can keep an eye on it. Good luck and it often is a work in progress.

The clear organizing bins you may like if you can find them dirt cheap. Sometimes places like TJ maxx and marshalls have them cheap It could be that you weren't able to see what is in the bins that may be leading to things that are expired you can't see. I struggle with my pantry as well so I feel you. I like that you use what you got and aren't dumping any money into this.

YES! A lot of YTubers throw away nonperishable food that is technically past the "best if used by" date but still good for a LOOOONG time and it upsets me. I wonder if they have to say that they are disposing of so-called expired food according to TH-cam rules so they won't be sued or something like that.

@@ZenDragoonYT Do a pantry clean out every X months. Then you make a basket with the things that are past their best by date. Looking at the things in the basket make a meal plan to use those up one week. It's usually not that the family doesn't like the food. It's usually that someone moves it. It falls behind something else and gets forgotten because we are all so busy.

They overcook and at the end of the meal any and EVERYTHING goes into the garbage that night

I'm sure that would work for the cupboards too . Also most stuff is still good after those dates. If it looks, taste or smells bad then toss it.

I can’t really use it as it is 3 shelves on top and 3 shelves on the bottom. The shelves are behind one door for each set of shelves. The shelves themselves are deep and very dark and I like to do Filo First in last out but things get pushed to the back and I can’t see. You actually have inspired me and in the last week I have decluttered my makeup vanity, my bathroom cabinets and drawers and my medicine bins. I also had a friend over and we decluttered about 2/3 of a junk room. Next on the list is to finish that room and combine it and my other junk room into one room as a guest bedroom and one room as a storage/stockpile room! You are so right! Small spaces at a time. One corner, one drawer and one shelf makes a HUGE difference.

I agree , if I can't see it I will forget about it. I would totally let everything on those little shelves in-between the 2 bigger sets of cabinets. I would use those for things like paper plates or non food items.
If you find yourself with to much candy stop by the local firehouse. I'm sure they would love some. Next big batch of toothpaste is getting dropped at mine 🤣
Ps right now my beast is the hall closet. I decluttered my clothes , and my linen closet and my couponing items but the hall closet ... is forever collecting items !!

Food has become my biggest focus in decluttering and keeping in check because food waste also pains me. Best i can say is just not to impulse shop. Or start using online pickup like walmart offers. Get ur essentials. Have a plan to use it.

Kudos Jodi! I would call those cabinets a pantry! I like that you can open your cabinets up and see everything at a glance. After organizing my pantry many times I finally got it to the point where it doesn’t need reorganized anymore, just tidy a bit. I probably have 10 videos of my pantry in my channel 🙀 Also have just the two of us at home now helps to keep it organized now! Sometimes it takes time to get it try way you want it. 💜👍💜👍💜👍💜👍💜

Hi Jodi- Congrats on your subscribers- Sweetie- don't throw canned goods out just because the date on it is passed, please please do some research on Best By Dates (BBD); expiration dates and best used by dates. These are all suggestions and guidelines manufactures have to go by, get yourself a sharpie and write the dates on items clearly, then stack food last in at the back and oldest up front... be sure to ROTATE your stock, this will help you organize and purchasing as well. Rule of thumb visually check and item, check seal sound when opening, smell then taste. Those peanut butters you tossed probably could have been donated or lasted months to years. It's amazing the amount of food people throw out. There are better ways of storing to extend your shelf life of foods as well. Great video looking forward to more. TY

I appreciate YOU! It's just so fun to have something to do besides watch television. Some people watch TV during their downtime and I watch videos on You Tube. I just find it more fun than television, except for football. LOL. That was so much fun watching EJ. That took me way back and I loved it. Well, you know I told you about me and organization already so I guess if I had to say something it would be the basement and that's mainly because of my husband and all his tools and my son with all his car buffers and waxes, etc. I constantly have to reorganize that stuff because it drives me batty. OMG, I watched the "bugs" videos too and was like I already knew what I was and how to take care of things. And you're totally right, everyone has their own way of organizing and doing things when it comes to the way they store things. And it definitely has to work for you or it wouldn't make any sense to use that system. And by the way, I think that cabinetry works PERFECT as a pantry. The shelves are adjustable so you can make the heights the way you need them for various items so I think that's awesome. We are in our home about a year and a half now after building from scratch, and I mean WE built it, for the most part. Of course we had a certified electrician, plumber, etc. but we did the majority of the work. But anyway, we made sure everything we could would be ADJUSTABLE because you never know. I'm super-organized but yet I let food expire and the reason is, well especially years ago, my kids would say oh, we want Pop Tarts, so being a couponer they'd go on sale, I'd print coupons from Kellogg's and get four or five boxes. They'd eat one box, 2 if I was lucky and they had enough of Pop Tarts, and they'd sit there and go bad. That is a shame but I just had to change the way I shopped for things and not get 25 of something that will expire quickly such as Pop Tarts. Laundry detergent of course is another story, but you can't get 50 boxes of cereal and expect your family to go through them. LOL. And again, you did amazing. So awesome Jodi. Those shelves ARE adjustable. You can even remove one and take it to the basement and have a ton of height. I noticed that with the clips and the holes and you could totally do that and make them custom to how you need them for your food, etc. I'm excited to see your next video! And right now what I'm working on is making Christmas swags. I took two of our very old Christmas trees, the ones with the individual branches and that's what I'm repurposing and making swags from. They are turning out awesome and I'm not that crafty but wanted a project and that's what I have been doing for the past week and a half and just having so much fun doing it. I have an entire area in the basement set up and am calling it Nancy's craft corner, to my family anyway. LOL. But that's what I've been doing when I'm not working or watching videos or cooking or cleaning, all the normal day-to-day stuff. Thanks for the giveaways and I am so happy that you are reaching so many people so quickly with your videos. That's so fun to know how many people enjoy watching your content. Have a great rest of your week Jodi!

Oh Christmas crafts sounds so fun!!
I think my shelves are suppose to be adjustable but I’ve tried so many times over the years and they will not budge. This house had a big kitchen renovation with the previous owner and I’m wondering if the shelves were glued or screwed in because I can not get them out 🤦‍♀️

Jodi, it looks wonderful. You have beautiful cabinets. I have a small kitchen with very few cabinets. I have a small pantry that is in my laundry area. The pantry is wire shelves, no doors. I straighten it up monthly. My linen area is the same in master bathroom. I always felt stressed for some reason, then I found Cass and Clutterbug. Turns out I'm a cricket and don't like to see my stuff. I had been using some clear bins and when I switched to containers I couldn't see thru, I could feel my stress going away. At one point in your video you said you were visual. Maybe consider clear bins for things you need a container for, like snacks. Our home is our haven, we only have to please ourselves and our family.

Living room... that has been like the dump space as we don't use the room everyday and there was no purpose for it. I have several of those can organizers and love them. I was going through my pantry and found some Ritz crackers that were expired by a year... I didn't want to just toss them because I hate to waste food. I opened them up and decided to try one thinking they must be stale and they were perfectly good. I am glad I didn't toss them. On the other side of that I had a brick of mozzarella cheese in the fridge with an expiration date of December this year and it was moldy. I wasn't happy about that.

I just decluttered and organized my pantry. I gave my mom all the food that I won’t eat, which are usually freebies I get from Ibotta. That way they don’t go to waste. Also been working on eating from the freezer and getting some things in there used up. I have a big deep freeze and it currently is full. I cooked a turkey a couple weeks ago to use in recipes.

We had to put one of our dogs to sleep and she has my husband's best pal they were so bonded. I made him a little plaque that says "I loved you your whole life and I'll miss you the rest of mine" I attached a hook to it and hung her collar on it. This now hangs on the wall in his office. I think if keeping her stuff brings him peace then we can keep it forever

You asked if we are basket persons.... I use them sparingly and only if they are transparent or so open-woven as to let me see easily the contents. If I cannot see what is in them I may overlook the contents and duplicate buy. I am short and use risers- graduated stacking devices- on the mid-level shelves so I can see everything and utilize vertical space. I limit my purchases to a set number, even with coupons or special offers, as we don't have the space to store much beyond a few weeks' worth of things. I set up a loose schedule of certain activities such as a 'frig sort each Friday to make sure the cold storage food is indeed okay and to use leftovers to make a savory soup. Oh, and baskets on the floor of the pantry can be solid as I am looking DOWN into them. I keep packages with the identifying label up or things to be protected from squashing, like chips/crackers. Fun to share this!
