An example of conflict resolution during a hockey game, and one that stands out immediately as a Sens fan, is the 2017 playoffs when Karlsson yelled at Brassard on the bench in Game 2 of the 1st round vs Boston. Brassard had just made a bad play not getting back leading to a goal and #65 just had at him. But then the 3rd period came and it was Karlsson setting Brassard up for the game tying goal and Brass jumped into EK's arms. That team had quite a strong leadership group with Karl, Anderson, Methot, Phaneuf, Ryan, and Turris, plus Kelly and Neil around but not playing. That strength and togetherness is a big part of why they came so close to the SCF.

I truly believe if they didn't make the Duchene trade and fired the couch alittle sooner they would have been okay. Before that trade they had a really solid record and that team was really solid. Boucher did the same thing in Tampa. First year conference finals. Next year miss the playoffs he was a one trick pony. Hoping this Sens core will bring us back to the promise land by next season

that’s what a true brotherhood of a hockey team is like. your leaders keep you in line and will absolutely give it to you if you do something stupid or make a costly play. but if you can take it and work hard to just keep going and do even better when you get out there, that right there is what a true team does. you clash with your brothers, but you celebrate and rejoice with your brothers

A lot of the changes Steve talks about adding to the team reminds me exactly like how the 06-07 Sens were built. They had the high end talent in Heatley, Spezza, and Alfredsson, but Alfie was a nasty mean competitor and a great leader. Fisher hit, Neil hit, Phillips was one of the best shutdown D-men, Volchenkov laid massive hits and blocked everything. Kelly and Vermette were elite 3rd liners and were monsters on the PK. And they still had 3 good puck movers on the back end in Redden, Corvo, and Preissing. That team started 17-18-1 but finished the year 31-7-8. This Leafs team has Matthews, Marner, Tavares, and Nylander, but they could sure use guys like Phillips, Volchenkov, Fisher, and Neil - all guys that would stand up for each other.

Another thing I found curious about the Leafs game against the Jets. When Robertson, Samsonov, and Sandin were smashed, the team went nuts and guys jumped in to have their backs, but when Marner got his face smashed off the boards, crickets. He was then yelling at the refs after every shift and it didn't look like anyone said anything to him. Might be nothing there, but it makes me wonder why the team didn't have his back on the ice.

    • @whoopass2rb
      @whoopass2rb ปีที่แล้ว +1

That is a very interesting point. I wonder if between the big 4 making money, he's the one shouldering most of the blame for the team's inability to go out and leverage cap space (because we don't have any). Matthews has proven his value, JT proved it before in his early years. Yes you're paying a premium for him technically but that's what free agency does. Then Nylander has the most tradable contract, but it is because he's also the most reasonable in value today.
So I wonder if you're on to something, that Marner holding out to get near Matthews money, has the team at odds with him in ways. The sad thing is, Marner drives any line he's put on so it's not like he's not worth the money. Unfortunate situation for all sides.

I know that the Oilers are not perfect and I am not saying they are, but I do believe they display what you guys are discussing. Most of their lines have IDENTITY. Of course, you should not overlook analytics, but every line has to have a purpose and cohesion, otherwise they will be exploited by the opponent.
    For example:
Hyman (Dog, Big, Forechecker) - McD (God) - RNH (Large, Experienced Playmaker) ... Top Tier Skill Line
Kane (Pain in the Ass, Strong in the corners, Goalscorer) - Drai (Playmaker, Goal Scorer) - Yamo (Annoying, Quick, Strong on puck, Forechecker) ...Skill + Size line
Foegle (Large, Strong in Corners, Forechecker) - McLeod (Young, Fast, Playmaker [mini-McD]) - Puljujärvi (Big, Fast, Strong) ... Forechecking / Tire you out line
Holloway (goal scorer, young, up and coming, getting his feet wet) - Ryan (experience, smart, distributor) - Shore (forechecker) ... 4th line / workhorse line.
AGAIN, not saying they're perfect and obviously I am an Oilers fan, so I am biased, but Jay Woodcroft talks about this all the time. He believes each piece is a component that results in the lines overall success. Each piece brings something different and they all bring out each others best. Each player has a ROLE and they know what it is.
Now, I am young, and I firmly believe in analytics. However, I have said it before and I'll say it again, Just because a team looks good on PAPER doesn't mean they will work. On paper doesn't show you a players work ethic / effort level, chemistry or grit. I know people hate "grit" but like Jay Woodcroft also says, "we may have different opinions of what physicality or "grit" is. It isn't just hitting or fighting. It is going to hard areas of the ice, winning battles and being difficult to play against".
I hope for Steve's Mental Health they turn this around

Want to see how a dressing room operates? there's a clip on You Tube of the recent Chicago-Minnesota game. Kane is knocked down flat from behind. Max Domi REALLY settles the score. For his efforts, Domi gets a thunderous standing ovation from the Chicago fans. For what is suppose to be a bad team, they have only lost one in regulation in their last seven.

Trade out Marner. That would be a good 1st step. It's not his play, it's his attitude. Otherwise a Scheifele/Wheeler type scenario is brewing. However, what does his absence do to Matthews? I want to know if Austin is okay with Marner's behaviour and attitude. Now I know why Holl is still around. He's best buds with Marner. Getting Keefe to grow a spine would be another good move.

Does it really matter if you leave the bench? Like guys in baseball go down the tunnel to blow up all the time, and some do it in the dugout. Like who cares whether or not he does it down the tunnel? If he blows up and trashes his stick on the bench and hurts someone, everyone would be yelling at him and saying to go do it down the tunnel

The penalty shot declined option is interesting. I actually thought you we're allowed to decline a penalty shot in the NHL, but it looks like I was wrong. The USA hockey rule book, which governs almost all youth hockey in the United States does allow for this option to take a minor penalty instead (rule 406), but the NHL rulebook doesn't seem to allow this and I don't understand why.

Players get frustrated and break sticks. It's better to walk away and break your stick, so no one gets hit with the stick by accident. I don't know how anybody who watches the Leafs play on a regular basis can question Marners effort or skill. Marner is not the problem. I don't listen to this podcast often, but when I do there's usually a lot of overreacting. Safe to say you guys didn't surprise me this time.
