    • @gbhxvohdchigblkh4620
      @gbhxvohdchigblkh4620 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Absolutely no hope for it, because the bfi has to be implemented by lg displays as a part of the the display controller named tcon board.
      Even the a90k has only an on/off Option for bfi, and you can bet against all woleds this year, none of them is going to provide a 120hz bfi, because it depends on the tcon board supplied by lg displays.

      I believe the panel uses less power draw, which means less heat and in theory less burn in risk. Less power draw may also put less strain on internal components and the power supply.

      doesn't the wbe seperate the reds and greens better then the wbc? isn't that what the spectroradiometer shows? i thought that was one of the selling points of the wbe over the wbc? i find it funny how on LG's own website its states "LG OLED evo sets a new standard. The next - gen OLED panel has been redesigned to include an extra layer and a stronger emissive material. These optimize the structure of the panel and refining the wavelengths of light. The result is brighter, punchier picture quality and improved clarity of content - its not just the display that's evolved, its your viewing experience." not once in that paragraph did it bring up the processor or any software. all hardware. So where is this new hardware if its using an old panel?

    • @vgamedude12
      @vgamedude12 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agree 100 percent. I don't think LG pulling this should be glossed over. I don't care about extra brightness or temporary retention I care about long term durability, especially as a pc monitor.
      And no one has tested this long term. And I definitely don't believe the old panel will somehow have the same durability as the new one.

    I'm loving my 42" LG C2 OLED. I'm using it primarily for movies and PC gaming and have it sat on my desk. I was previously using a LG 48" C1 but found it to be a little too big for the desk. It was giving me a fair bit of eye fatigue at such a close range and the 48" model also has a stand which sticks out quite a bit behind the TV (around 16cm). With the 42" C2, its legs only stick out 6cm behind the TV so it means the TV itself can be pushed further back on the desk compared to the 48" C1. Picture quality-wise, I find the 42" C2 to be slightly clearer than the 48" with regards to text and small details. This is due to the pixel density of the smaller screen. Overall, the 42" C2 is a much more comfortable viewing experience for desktop usage. My 48" C1 now lives in another room.

      I would love to know what its like for viewing documents. - I would guess its possible to view a whole Google-Doc / PDF without scrolling? - 60-80 lines - but I wonder how clear text appears. A 27" Apple Thunderbolt has a DPI of 109 - which imo is perfect at arms length. - The LG is 99 - so, it would make sense to put it just beyond arms length. - a 24" 1080p monitor has a DPI of 82, which I think is too low for text based work. Unless there is a sanely priced OLED based productivity monitor released in the next 2 months, I will have to give the C2 a try. - Not ready to pay for a 32EP950 quite yet.

Great technical analysis as always!

Regarding the uniformity issue, does this only occur on white elements? Or does anything dragged to that part of the screen get a color shift? Say I move a photo to the far right part of the screen, will the colors on that photo be presented differently compared to if the same photo was in the center of the screen? Thanks.

    • @S3lvah
      @S3lvah 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Seems like OLEDs still need to iron out some issues before being easy to recommend to everyone as general-purpose monitors. Right now, it's a trade-off between highs (contrast, color, speed) and lows (non-uniformity, image retention, price). Even QD-OLED has color-fringing due to its unique pixel stricture.
      It's a tough decision for PC enthusiasts, especially since there's no massive improvement in sight. Sure you can keep your existing monitor on the same desk for non-content-consumption use, but then its colors (VA) or contrast (IPS) are going to look miserable after returning from the OLED - not to mention desk space constraints. This worries me personally.

Still, i don't see a reason to not use big parts of the screen. Imo letterboxing doesn't offer anything in terms of immersion. And that's coming from an ultrawide owner.

The monitor I got is 32gp850 and it can achieved 400+ cd/m2 both SDR and HDR when connected to PC. So I rather stay away from this if you plan to plug into PC. But if you plug PS5 to that LG it will improve brightness back up to 343 cd/m2 at 10% size in expert mode dark room with peak brightness on high. Still it is puzzling me why in PC mode it shows much darker result in cd/m2 than in other mode.

  • @steadychaosproductions3376

    The WBC and WBE distinction doesn't necessarily matter when you're talking about temporary image retention. Where it matters is the long term durability of a set and its ability to stave of permanent burn in; deuterium based WBE "Evo" panels are theoretically more resistant in this regard than WBC panels.
    I like your stuff Vincent, but honestly, it feels like you let LG off the hook way too easily here. Bit disappointed in you to be honest.

    • @hdtvtest
      @hdtvtest  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @SteadyChaos Productions: Unless you have hard data to prove that WBC is not up to task, we'll have to take the word of LG who have actually done accelerated testing themselves. After all, all OLED TVs over the past few years have been using WBC OLED panels, and we haven't seen an increase in reports of permanent burn-in, have we?
      We present all the data as is without sugarcoating so that potential buyers can make an informed decision. Without our objective testing, you wouldn't even know that most 42-inch C2 OLEDs today are using a WBC panel. Our conscience is perfectly clear despite your disappointment.

    • @steadychaosproductions3376
      @steadychaosproductions3376 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@hdtvtest Not looking to get in a back and forth here, but do you really think showing a ten second clip of some image retention fading is somehow proof WBC is just as reliable as WBE and deuterium based panels? I'm just not sure its useful - that's all.
      My qualm with LG is they put "Evo" on the C2 box - all of them.
      This is how LG defines their EVO TVs: "Experience television as never before. The ...OLED evo TV [is] our best OLED TV yet. Your viewing experience has evolved with brighter, punchier picture quality and improved clarity thanks to the next-gen OLED panel. An extra layer and stronger emissive material optimizes the structure to increase efficiency by refining the light wavelengths."
      The problem is, with a standard WBC C2, there are no increased efficiencies or refined wavelengths - as LG is not using the "stronger emissive material" (Deuterium) - just standard hydrogen instead.
      See this excerpt from Chemical & Engineering News - they interviewed a technical fellow (Norman Herron) who develops OLED displays using hydrogen and deuterium based compounds:
      "Lifetime, Herron explains, is a top consideration for OLED materials. Every pixel in an OLED display is made up of about eight materials stacked in emissive and charge-transport layers. The deterioration of just one of these materials can cause image-sticking problems, ruining the entire display. “What we ultimately do is make sure that we address the weakest material, or the slowest dog on the team, and make sure that it comes up to speed,” Herron says. For LG’s OLED.EX technology, DuPont deuterated an existing molecule used to carry electrons in the blue-emissive substack. DuPont won’t say what the molecule is other than to classify it as a polyfused aromatic compound. A big synthetic challenge for the DuPont team, which has been working on deuterated OLED compounds for 15 years, was replacing hydrogen with deuterium while maintaining high purity. There are multiple carbon-hydrogen bonds in that molecule, and we are substituting some of them but not all of them,” Herron says. “And the net effect is we apparently increased the lifetime. So we must be addressing some of the weaker carbon-hydrogen bonds that were leading to the degradation behavior.”
      To me, LG is simply being deceptive. They got caught. They claim their EVO uses a specific compound giving it improved brightness and efficiency. But, the 42/48" C2 lacks said compound, despite being marketed as such. And, based on the science, deuterium allows OLED panels to be driven, on average, about 30% harder while maintaining the same life expectancy. Therefore, it goes without saying if one were to use deuterium with standard OLED level brightness - say 750 nits - life expectancy would be greatly improved compared to conventional hydrogen based panel.

      @hdtvtest  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @SteadyChaos Productions: You're not looking to get into a back and forth, yet wrote a thesis full of flaws.
      You have to understand that fundamentally, LG Electronics (the TV maker) and LG Display (the panel maker) are different entities. LG Electronics (the TV maker) who came up with the "EVO" branding never admitted to deuterium use. The deuterium component is only promoted by LG Display (the panel maker).
      So if you read the EVO definition you've quoted yourself: "An extra layer and stronger emissive material optimizes the structure to increase efficiency by refining the light wavelengths." - it could simply mean optimisation of the existing WBC panel. And you can't say that there's no optimisation, because until this year, there hasn't been a WBC 42-inch panel with the higher pixels per inch (PPI) yet roughly the same peak brightness of 700 nits - hence "increased efficiency".
      Bottom line is, we have honestly and transparently reported the WBC panel on our 42-inch LG C2, so that consumers can make an informed decision. If you *REALLY* think you have a case against LG for false advertising, put your money where your mouth is and start a class-action lawsuit against them, and you'll quickly see how far your presumptions will go in court. Good luck.

    I would like it if Vincent would do a video sometimes about user nterface function by manufacturer as no one ever bothers to mention things like picture in picture options - which can vary a lot - but they never get a mention.
    Sound modes is something else that rarely gets a mention either... and considering how some old games machines use to run with big black bars screen adjust is an issue too. none of that ever gets mentioned much. Screen position adjust is another one that is handy to have as well but again doesn't ever get mentioned - so you are left guessing or having to go look up he PDF of the manuals for every TV and hope they mention things and don't try to hide things (i am looking at you Samsung and Sony)

    I did noit know about VRR flicker. I thought it was my computer output, Windows, GPU drivers etc when I saw the screen flickering on game menus. I will test thee option in game optimizer to see if it helps. Thanks for the heads up Vincent. Would you say the frame judder on 24 fps movies is significantly better on the C2 than the C1?

    - Yellow blob color tinting
    - Still gamma problems with VRR
    LG messed up... 120 Hz BFI was a major selling point for me. Why would they remove that? Will it return in a firmware upgrade?

    just have it for days, it is the NO BRAINER for GAMER. some says C1 48 inch is better but there is supply issue so only limited availability even logically much more budgets. agreed it is not the best overall . 48 inch C2 is also super limited that needed to pre-order for weeks *atleast in my cities maybe.

    This transition issue really has bugged me on my good old 55" B7 ... definitely more in DV than HDR10(+), but yeah. This genuinely puts me off watching in DV, as (in my dumb head) I can usually rely on HDR10 (not 10+) to just keep the same luminance/brightness/whatevs throughout ...

    It would be really nice if you could ask LG if they intend to return 120hz BFI to the C2 in an update. I know its a niche feature due to the low brightness but its honestly the feature I have the highest hopes for, if it were 50% brighter I would forgo HDR in games altogether for the motion clarity.
    9:14 - I also noticed these jarring transitions on the C1. It can be really frustrating seeing the panel flex its high brightness capability before backing off. According to RTings ABL figures for the C1 are much higher than the 55" panels, I'm guessing most of the people saying they don't notice dynamic brightness changes are at 55" and above.

    should I worry about uniformity in a pure gaming perspective? Additionally is this panel bright enough for a moderately lit environment or should I look for an LED panel instead if I am not in a completely dark environment?

  • @colpanerdi
    @colpanerdi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    no, the tinting isnt isolated to your panel vincent. even last years panels have that "defect" on the coating, watched your videos before buying an 65" C1 since you look like know what you are doing and recommeding it as best tv to buy for gaming, all the underlying features are nice but the most important thing is picture quality and my first one had some on the right side and it was too noticable left 5% of the screen was simply red, lg refused to replace it but fortunately it had an earc issue too and it got replaced with another c1 that has half the screen pink tinted but not that much noticable. so first tv: %5 heavy pink tint, second one: 50% milder pink tint. It's unbearable, maybe it's just me being a graphic designer and having an eye for things like these. But these tvs never should have left the factory in this condition this is very anti-consumer behaviour, selling these tvs with manufacturing defects and not replacing them, please investigate this topic and use caution when recommending lg oleds. Also C1 goes bonkers on some content with low light, crushed gradients and very noticable bands everywhere, whats the point in deep blacks when its unwatchable mostly on dark scenes?

    • @hdtvtest
      @hdtvtest  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Erdi Çolpan: We always honestly and transparently report the uniformity issues on our review samples. There is always going to panel-to-panel variation, and these are consumer displays that are mass-produced - the vast majority of owners simply don't see these issues. If the colour tinting is unbearable for you, are you willing to pay at least £10,000 for a totally clean 65-inch C1, because that's the amount of quality control and hardware tolerance needed to make sure every panel is uniform...

    • @colpanerdi
      @colpanerdi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hdtvtest Thanks for the reply! I don't blame you for anything by the way, you are my go to channel about tvs forever, with the feature set It's still the only tv I'd buy, LG has everything where others lack this or that but the picture quality was a dissappointment for me, also it looks like an issue with anti glare coating instead of panel as in my case tint isn't visible up close (the pixels are showing right colors) Also the new one I got is less noticable in content, but things like solid background or cell shaded games are no go (colors get desaturated on tinted side) I wonder if other manufacturers using oled panels with their coating have this tinting issue?
