I don’t throw away any scraps of yarn or anything soft and squishy because I use it for stuffing when stuffing dolls or pillows! So you really don’t need to waste any of the T-shirt at all!

Little did you know that, when you made this video three years ago that your instructions would help people who are making masks for health workers during the Covid 19 pandemic. I ran out of elastic quite quickly and needed something to make ties for the masks. I remembered that loops of old t shirts would roll up but could not figure out how to get alot of them out of a T shirt. Your video

This is exactly why I came to this video! I am a nurse and my sewing group created during COVID for the sole purpose of making and distributing masks far and wide, have now taken on the task of making masks for the local elementary school students and staff. T shirt ties were the easiest way to accommodate everyone's head and I had no idea how to make them. The first tutorial I watched discarded half the shirt! Yikes! Thanks for this video!
This is the first tutorial that I've seen using the whole t shirt instead of just the main torso part up to the underarm and the rest was discarded. This tutorial is environmentally friendly. Especially in this day and age when everything is readily discarded.

I recently lost 50 lbs and while I typically wear clothes until they completely wear out with no thoughts about fashion, some of my stuff is pretty much falling out. It’s way too worn out to donate so I’m going to use all the knits for yarn! I have a rotary cutter now, too. Game changer.

@rita pita The only thing I can think is that a synthetic fiber may not curl like the all cotton...but you can try a tiny section, pull, and see if it will.

My Mom passed away some years ago and I saved several of her favorite t- shirts with the hopes I would find an idea that I could repurpose them into something else. Oh! What a great idea! I was thinking of stealing some of hubby's holier shirts but, my daughter died and left me with dozens of T-shirts, not my size, that I can use to make something for myself as a keepsake.
And still be able to wear a part of her with you. Like maybe use them to make numerous things as gifts, and distribute them among her family members. Maybe even sew in her intials or something that was her signature icon, name, a symbol, a heart etc. Anything sewn into each of the things you make that's in memory of her for all of the loved ones.
I've seen where brides would have a small patch of material shaped into a small heart that was from a deceased loved ones favorite shirt or whatnot, sewn somewhere onto their wedding dress. I thought it was a nice loving idea.
Another thing you could do with em, after turning them into yarn, make a blanket using a pattern that'll make it look a lot like a quilt. Maybe add some pictures to some of the parts etc? It's just an idea. Make it a family crochet quilt or something.

Just found this video, and WOW! I just went through all the t-shirts in my house to donate last week, to only turn around after watching this video and pull most of them for yarn. I have been wanting to try this for the longest time and just can't bring myself to pay the high prices but now I can make those rugs and save on both ends, thanks for sharing your process. I believe I have enough to make a room size rug now. I'm just thrilled!

Thanks so much! As a tie dyer I'm always left with tee shirts that don't meet my quality control standards. I've been yarn-ing the bottom section of the tee shirts, and using the top sections for rags. Now I can make the whole shirt into yarn! Ty!

I love doing the stretching too. Thank you for showing me how to use the flat parts. I hated having little parts stick out from them.I had learned the continuous part from pictures for the main body many years ago. 15 or so.
Such an awesome idea. Just an idea though for the unusable scraps. You could save up all small unusable fabric scraps and put them in a sac for birds to come and pick through for their nest making.

Thanks for showing me how. We had a young activity where the kids made jump ropes out of donated T-shirts and this made it a lot faster and used more of the shirt than I planned on.

WOW! JUST, Wow! This has to be the best ”T-Shirt Yarn” instructions. Thank you. I have 2 or 3 drawers jammed full of hubbikins undershirts (lotta stains in there). I wanted to make him something to commemorate his retirement and I do believe making this yarn will open up the possibilities.

Excited to make T-shirt yarn! get my passion for upcyling from my grandma who grew up working as a sharecropper and a nanny for other families in Oklahoma during the Depression and the Dustbowl. She ran off to NYC at 16 and became a successful businesswoman, but she continued reusing and repurposing.

I am all about making as little waste as possible, and after watching several videos that made it seem sadly impossibly to use more than just the lower half of a plain T-shirt, this video was a very welcome refresher. Glad to see a little imagination can offer you much more and waste much less!!

This is awesome! I have a lot of old, faded, ratty tshirts from my kids that I was just going to throw away, all of them together were not enough to do a patchwork. Now I can strip them down and dye it all, and make a casual throw out of it, you gave me some great ideas!

I don't think I would use for stuffing as it is hard and lumpy rather than soft and squishy enuff for amigurimu or pillows tbh

This is the most comprehensive and understandable video on how to make t-shirt yarn I have ever seen! I have watched other videos on how to make t-shirt yarn before and could never quite understand how it ended in one long strip of fabric and I they never caught my interest enough for me to watch them until I might understand either. I wish all vid makers were as efficient as you; thanks so much! I've made Tarn (t-shirt yarn) and leave the goofy ends on the Tarn to more or less create a fringe effect, country-style.....once crocheted or knitted, etc., any too goofy ends can be trimmed out.

Been making masks for our large family and some friends because of the Coronavirus. I researched the mask making and talked to some nurses,surgical assistants, etc and they said that the masks with the elastic over the ears really make the back of ears raw. Even those those masks are faster and easier to make I wanted something different. So, I’ve been making masks using a halter style closing where the loop is at the back of the neck and it ties at the top. I cut up one T-shirt without side seams to make some continuous yarn by cutting around and around. But, not having any more no side seam shirts I started looking for alternatives and found your video. Love your method and I do have some tshirts with side seams. Will be doing it now so I can finish some more masks to help protect other people. I’ll bet you didn’t think when you made this video years ago that it would be used during a pandemic. Here is an idea for using the rib eye neck piece once you have trimmed it away. It's perfect for a headband for yourself or your daughters. You can even sew buttons or other cute accessories on it.

Dear friend. First of all I thank you for making this vedio.
I am giving you one idea of making mop.
You buy sticks and round ring with scerw from hardware shops.
With the help of ring with screws you fix the T shirt. Your big piece cutting or neck cutting is ok for making round mop.
You can also make horizontal.
You buy one mop with only rubber at the base used for removal of water. You buy scew with round head and two sides opening used for fixing electricity wires.
You male and female strips used by tailor.
You take Male strips...... and fix it on horizontal mop with help of screws with two sides opening.
Female strips you stichTshirt cutting larger size which you have cut.
You can remove your mop very quickly because handling male female strips is easy . You can keep aside and put another Tshirt mop on the same stick. The cleaning process will be better , easier and faster.
Rest you know. You are too much artistic.

I am giving one idea for making dust pan. You take 20 liter or 10 liter or 5 liter plastic drum as per as requirement.
You cut it give shape of dust pan.
You buy screws with nut and take one wooden stick of desired requirement.
Fix this wood to plastic dust pan using screws with nut bolt.
Why I am suggesting nut bolt because with time it gets loosened,
If ever it gets loosened you can fix it.

I have a few high school shirts that I think I'm going to do this to. They have sentimental value so I dont want to just throw them out, but I also have nowhere in my drawers for them anymore. I can knit them in with some other sentimental shirts and make a variant of a milestone quilt.

Simply amazing........so many yards of yarn. I have done this with fabric.......now I can use the tshirts I have saved mainly for rags but will be perfect for this.

This video may have been made 6 years ago but it is even more relevant today when we should be recycling/reusing as much as possible. I like how you used every little bit of the tee, and I even have a way to use the seams and other parts left over: In the garden! Those little strips would be great to tie up tomatoes and other plants that want to spread out and fall over. TFS! (BTW, making a plarn waste basket right now.)
