But this exclusive 101 East investigation reveals how Korean-run companies are allegedly engaging in questionable deals as they buy up forests to develop palm oil plantations.
Featuring rare access to a restive Indonesian province usually off-limits to journalists, we meet tribesmen who allege that Posco International and Korindo are plundering their land for a pittance.
Both companies deny all allegations including fraud and human rights abuses.
Selling Out West Papua was produced in collaboration with Mongabay, The Gecko Project and the Korea Centre for Investigative Journalism.

I am a Marind tribe native. I can confirm that a lot native tribes in Papua (including the Marind) are being marginalized in their own land, as we speak. To all who want to come to Papua, please be open minded. Your definition of 'good development' does not necessarily translate to our 'good development'. To be honest, everyone in Papua doesn't have a positive image of these palm oil companies. One solution is to study anthropology and appreciate the culture, or there will be no end of this.

Who paid Prabowo to protect Freeport from local people? This is the same as what has happened in Iraq. By manipulating rich natural resources countries currencies, the US can buy politicians and implement their own manipulated foreign investment law.

A lot of teachers and paramedics have been sent there because it's origin forest land and they need education and doctors but papua is difficult to access. The way that guy, when asked, will Korindo give compensation and replied with how Americans do not compensate the Native American tribes... It speaks volumes about what he is actually thinking. Yes, I believe this might be a case of land robbery, and it shows how much the Indonesian government needs to do in order to be fair and just towards indigenous people, as this claim of land robbery happens to many tribes across Indonesia and not just in Papua.

I'm from Africa, similar modus operandi by the Chinese stripping Africa. BUT, there's two sides to the story. The locals often don't give a toss either, they just see dollar signs and when they don't get enough or when the money dries up, they complain. Yes, these Asian companies are taking advantage of uneducated, gullible people, but the "victims" are (more often than not) part of the problem. I've travelled extensively in PNG, Indonesia, Vanuatu, etc. and as with Africa, corruption and a lack of education are the main problems.
You know that america did wrong by robbing apache land. Than, why you did the same thing to papua people??

it is not purely the Indonesian government's fault. if you watch this thoroughly, you'll notice that the companies bought out land from West Papuan people (even if the tribes have disputes between each other). the Indonesian government doesn't involve in the deals at all. so there's no guarantee that if the Indonesian government leaves West Papua for good that these West Papuan people will stop selling out their land to plantation companies.

Papua itself is not homogeneous at all. There is no Papuan nation, there is no Papuan ethnicity. Papua is composed of many different ethnicities and languages (most of them unintelligible) such ranging from Dani, Asmat, and many hundreds of ethno-languages. Don't forget that historically even to this day those ethnicities occassionally and traditionally FIGHT interethnic WARS between themselves which results in RAIDS, RAPINGS, and MURDERS. This is a reality, I was told by my own INDIGENEOUS PAPUAN friend born in Wamena (he is now working as a business development for a startup company in Jakarta). Is he brainwashed? No. It's his parents first-hand experience. He is critical of racistic attitudes of some people toward ethnicities from Papua but he acknowledges that the presence of Indonesia actually deters those wars by pulling them into negotiation or acting as peacekeepers.

@@dellingson4833 Papua itself is not homogeneous at all. There is no Papuan nation, there is no Papuan ethnicity. Papua is composed of many different ethnicities and languages (most of them unintelligible) such ranging from Dani, Asmat, and many hundreds of ethno-languages. Don't forget that historically even to this day those ethnicities occassionally and traditionally FIGHT interethnic WARS between themselves which results in RAIDS, RAPINGS, and MURDERS. This is a reality, I was told by my own INDIGENEOUS PAPUAN friend born in Wamena (he is now working as a business development for a startup company in Jakarta). Is he brainwashed? No. It's his parents first-hand experience. He is critical of racistic attitudes of some people toward ethnicities from Papua but he acknowledges that the presence of Indonesia actually deters those wars by pulling them into negotiation or acting as peacekeepers.
Many indigenous tribes or aboriginals lost their land in the world because of their skin colour being black or red indians too in the americas (south and north). The beneficiaries continue to colonize using all institutions tailor made for this land grab. UNSC (VETO POWERS), NATO, IMF, WORLD BANK etc. etc. etc.

the main gov failed to step in afterwards, and the local who sold or lease the land seems not to include the whole entire party who will be affected. The company, they just see it from the paper agreement. If their (local) quality of life is improved from all of these leasing and stuff, I think everyone will be win win, except the environment itself.

This problem is all common within Indonesia, even in West Java, illegal gold mining companies are taking over hundreds of hectare land and hurting our own people. It gets worse in Kalimantan. The abuse of indigenous people in the name of development. That is a scar that Indonesian is carrying from the era of Soeharto with his capitalism. So this problem is not unique to Papua, it is happening in the whole of Indonesia, or I can argue that it is also happening in other developing countries if they embraced the system of capitalism.
I'm not saying it is right, its wrong, it needs to be changed, but it cannot happen without profound change within the economic system. Until that can happen, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, westerners, are going to always confiscate Indonesian tribes land. System can be changed if and only if the people are educated.
