Street Running Trains, Michigan City Indiana Street Runner Trains! South Shore Line Railway & Amtrak

  • Unusual streetrunning trains in Michigan City Indiana. Railroad maintenance is going on while replacing the street running railroad track on Eleventh Street. South Shore Line commuter trains and freight trains share the tracks and there is a nearby line with Amtrak. We filmed several trains going down the street on August 11, 2017. We stayed at the Bridge Inn at Michigan City to watch trains cross a 1905 bridge that closes about 15 minutes before trains arrive. This video shows 2 Amtrak trains cross the bridge along with 3 streetrunning trains. CSX shares the line over the historic bridge with Amtrak. Future videos will show more Amtrak trains here and near the Michigan boarder. We also stayed at the Golden Sands Motel to watch trains near the boarder of Indiana and Michigan.
    UPDATE: The street running section has been changed. This Street running track is no longer street running track since around 2023.

    When I was growing up, my Mother taught me a little song about a railroad that ran through the middle of the house, where the parlor used to be. I haven't thought about that song in ages, until I saw the railroad that ran down the middle of the street! Great video, enjoyed every minute of it! Thank you for sharing

    The South Shore line runs from South Bend, In. To Chicago Millenium station. With stops along the south shore cities in Indiana. Stopping in Hudson Lake, Michigan City, Indiana Dunes, Portage, Gary Metro, Gary airport, East Chicago and 6 stops in Chicago. Full electric powered commuter rail.

    Very interesting video to us Brits. Firstly street running is rare in UK and the electric train had almost every pantograph up on the live wire. We were over in the USA in May and travelled from New Jersey to Seattle including riding the "Empire Builder"

      It means the carriages are independently powered & only have control jumpers. We don't do that to avoid causing a catastrophic rippling effect in the wires. Theoretically. But then, they don't run high speed. The last street running I saw was in Weymouth.

      I took the Cardinal from Chicago to Philadelphia and the Lake Shore Limited from New York, Penn Station to Chicago. It was an amazing trip. From Chicago to DC they run diesel-electric locomotives, and from DC to New York they run electric locomotives. They then switch back to diesel somewhere around Buffalo.

      The South Shore Line is perhaps one of the most unique commuter operations in the entire world. Definitely the US. There are large street-running sections of commuter rail all over the country, but most have grade crossings. The Amtrak runs along the street for a good way through Chicago if you ride the California Zephyr.

    Just a note to your fine video, they are not double tracking 10th or 1th Street, they are replacing sections of track. This may all go away since Michigan City is trying to eliminate street running by using the former C&O line to the south.

    The South Shore line runs from South Bend to downtown Chicago. The Michigan City stretch is considered a bottleneck to the rail line because it is double-tracked for most of the journey to Chicago. There is planning in motion to also make it double-tracked through this stretch and to cut off MOST of the cross streets. They also want to separate the rails from the street traffic. There will be many houses demolished to accommodate this. It would still follow the same route, but be much different. There were years of debate to re-route roughly 1/2 mile north or south of this street ultimately settling on staying where they are. The Amtrak does not street run here, but does cross this line just beyond where the camera was filming. The shown footage only showed about 1/2 of the total street-running portion.

      Check out CSX freight trains and Amtrak going through Ashland, Virginia on the main line from Washington/NY to Florida. There's about a mile of street running there, which is insane given the volume of heavy trains on a busy two-track line and road traffic. Another street running hotspot though freight only as far as I recall is St. Mary's, West Virginia.

    What is the deal with all those pantographs? Why is it necessary for each unit to have 2 pantographs?

    • @killman369547
      @killman369547 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      each train car is independently powered (each car has electric motors powering its wheels) they're basically locomotives that double as passenger cars. the train needs these extra pantographs because those electric motors take alot of juice to run, more than other electric trains with power units on either end with regular passenger cars. if all of it were sent through 1 pantograph or 2 it would probably overload and burn up. the extra ones prevent that by spreading out the electrical load.

    • @haddockman30
      @haddockman30 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting given that many other trains only use 1 pantograph per train to do the same job.

    • @Tigerskunk
      @Tigerskunk 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Taking a close look, it looks like there are 3 sets of two cars and the rest are single cars. That means each single car and each set of two needs its own power to run. They must be connected by MU cables *multi unit* only and not be sharing power like unit trains like a high speed trains do between cars.
      On the two car sets it looks like they to the regular car and walled off the door and put a window in its place leaving all the driving gear on to save on costs.

    • @n4gix
      @n4gix 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Every car is double-ended, meaning they aren't turned around at the end of the line. The driver simply walks to the other end of the consist to the cab, or another driver take over. Both ends of the line are dead ends.

    • @buddyclem7328
      @buddyclem7328 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That still doesn't answer why there are 2 pantographs on each car, and why every other pantograph is down. I understand if they are running low voltage, like 500VDC-1500VDC each car needs a pantograph, but why 2 for each car, since pantographs are bi-directional.
