Woah this made me so nostalgic and emotional. Gfriend is my ult kpop group, they were really one of a kind. They have this orchestral-pop signature sound, and the anime-ish vibe as well. Also known as synchronization queens, you might want to check their dance practices and some of the dance challenges in variety shows (they were known as the 2x speed dance queens too). Their knife-like choreos really stepped up the game for other ggs at the time when it wasn't that common for them to have intense moves. Their vocals have also been praised a lot, they sang acapella in their rookie days and sound amazing, and Yuju has been claimed as one of the vocalists of the generation several times.
They're very talented and hard-working girls, funny, beagles and sweet as well. They keep saying they will come back together, so the fandom (BUDDY) is still waiting for them.
Nowadays Sowon is an actress, Yerin is a soloist and also debuted as actress, Yuju is a soloist and Eunha, SinB and Umji are in Viviz.
Yerin's two title tracks are Aria and Bambambam, other nice songs of her are Believer, The dance and Time.
For Yuju, I recommend you listen to her REC. album especially, all the songs are good (Bad Blood, Play, The Killa, Cold Winter, Blue Nostalgial). Her second title track is Without U, Peach Blossom is very good too and Dreaming has insane vocals, and Dalala is her last single (besides she's written practically al her songs in her discography).
Idk if you're familiarized with Viviz but their title tracks are Bop Bop, Loveade, Pull Up and Maniac. However, they have very good b-sides that I prefer oher their tts (except for Maniac) such as Mirror, Love Love Love, Blue Clue and Untie. Their queendom song, Red Sun!, is also very good, kind of a jazzy and musical theater-ish vibe.

By the way! I believe you will enjoy their japanese discography a lot. Their title tracks are, in order: Memoria, Flower and Fallin' Light (also La Pam Pam is imo a b-side must). They maintain that orchestral-pop sound they're known for, so I wanted to let you know in case you want to check those out too!

the lore is that the first 3 songs of Gfriend is them being innocent and then it progresses to them turning “dark” and becoming witches/getting powers from a pond that’s in love whisper. The more you go through the Gfriend mv’s it explains the meaning behind the butterfly, especially in crossroad it’s where they actually show us what it means. Also, their albums Song of Siren and Labyrinth included a little book that also includes stuff into the lore.
There’s some youtube videos that explains the lore more in depth.

Totally enjoyed your breakdowns and always good to see people get into gfriend even after they disbanded... my fave group and prob the best discography in kpop in my opinion. I do hope you cover their japanese releases although there might be problems with copyright. Anyway subscribed so ill be back on part 2. I didn't expect Flower Garden, my fav bside. It would be nice to include You're Not Alone too.
If I am not mistaken, in GFriend lore, the girls are all innocent friends who each possess a pure glass bead ("Glass Bead" MV). They discover a magical pool of water in a forest ("Love Whisper" MV). They dance and play in the water, which gives each of them a different power. However, tension develops within the group. Some members fall in love with each other ("Love Whisper" MV), resulting in longing ("Sunrise" MV") and heartbreak ("Summer Rain" MV). Jealousy also develops over each others powers, resulting in fighting within the group ("Fingertip" and "Crossroads" MVs), even resulting in the death of one of the girls ("Time for the Moon Night" MV).
In order to change the past and prevent this tragedy and restore their friendships, Eunha uses the power of some magical butterflies (called "Navi" in Korean, which is also VIVIZ's fandom name) to go back in time ("Fingertip" MV ending and "Crossroads" MV"). However, each failed attempt seems to have a worse outcome than the last ("Crossovers" MV). In addition, each time travel attempt Eunha does uses up one of her Navi and corrupts her glass bead more and more ("Crossroads" MV), putting a toll on her ("Time for the Moon Night" MV).
Eventually, all the girls become fully corrupted, becoming dark witches rather than the pure girls they once were ("Apple" MV). As these witches, they go out to have fun and embrace their vices ("Mago"). As such, they avoided their original tragic fate of jealousy, parting ways and death by staying together and having fun, but are no longer the innocent girls that they once were.
I've been a fan of GFriend and never understood their MV concept and how they are connected. Your comment made it all sense.

@@AudioAddictionmediayou could also add In Gfriend’s original Japanese songs Memoria (possibly the best GFriend song ever), Flower (Latin salsa vibes) and the emotional Fallin Light to create a longer Part 3. Also add in Red Sun which is an unreleased GFriend song performed by VIVIZ and Love Love Love which was the fans favourite song of theirs in a poll before Maniac came out. That should give enough quality material with their solo releases to make a great Part 3. But also add in Yuju’s OST for Alice called Secret which is breathtaking and Eunha’s OST called Don’t come with Bye which is the most emotional song I think she has ever sung.
SUNRISE QUADRUPLE HIGH-NOTES STILL ONE OF THE ICONIC VOCALS EVER EXISTED AND GFRIEND STILL SLAY IT.. THEY ARE SO OUTSTANDING GROUP. 🫶❤️

They're witches already...
From the lines " I wanna ride a broom and Fly " as well as " 6960 magic" which refer to NGC6960 , the witch broom nebula.
They wear glittering clothes because they ate the apple ( Apple MV describe apple to be glittering ).
The music Video is about Sowon's attempt to save the girls , apparently , the rest of the members were burned at stake in apple MV , because apple MV is the start of the Walpurgis Night, a celebration of witches burned at the stake.
In the apple MV , the hair burning Ritual shows the apples= Glass bead burning , except Sowon's , Because no one cut her hair at the back.
1. Sowon come to save rest of the girls , she enter the tunnel ( Symbolism that she's leaping through the time ) To save the girls who were burned at the stake in apple MV.
2. They dance in the moon ( Disco Ball ) Night , which is part of the Walpurgis Night festival , Yuju seems to be the Queen of that night , consistent with her being the only one with a CROWN in apple MV. That also explains the overwhelming number of mirrors in the MV , an object related to Yuju's Power.
3. We know that sowon obtained a unique ability from the bookstore owner ( Marchen Book ) , in the same way eunha got her Navilleras/butterflies. She used this ability to travel to the future ( Tunnel ) , where the people celebrate The Wlapurgis Night , where the rest of the burnt Member Re- appear ( This is a holiday ) , This is in the lyrics the girls can dance to the moon night again 2 years ago , on the night of april 30 ( european holiday for Walpurgis Night ) , Gfriend Release Time For the Moon night.
4. They were unsure and afraid of the future in TFTMN , but in MAGO , they are expecting the future , they are no more hesitant ( Hakuna Matata = No worries ) of which crossroad to take , as the lyrics suggest " Joy or Sorrow everything will be me ".
5. In the end , sowon managed to get them back and they went through the same tunnel , going back in time , this tunnel almost similiar to the tunnel in the sunrise. There is also a fish eye lens scene in the last dance Sequence , which is a glass bead shot, which is sowon glass bead ability , she can look the girl wherever they are through her glass bead , as revealed in in the marchen book. As well as sunny summer when eunha saw something through sowon jewelry ( The diamond she nearly swallowed ). This tell us that sowon , after meeting with the bookstore owner , can probably look at the girls in the future... Thats why she was able to locate the time line to go through. If eunha uses the power of the butterfly vis-a-vis, her power to create lucid dreams ( she goes back in time .. to the time she is last a sleep ) . Sowon can use the unique power vis-a-vis, her power to see the girls using the glass bead . The song lyrics also combination of their other song lyrics , esp. Navillera and fingertip.
They're going back in time now .. opposite of the old GFRIEND that continuosly goes right by the ever so flowing concept of time. Hence the Railroad , Trains , Seasons , Bridges , And Trees.
We get to see the most obvious indication of Twin Eunha and Sinb.
They have been giving us hints of their " ONEness " in fingertip ( When Sinb astral projection comes out of Eunha ) , Love Whisper ( Yerin x Sinb which turns out to be Yerin x Eunha in navillera ) , TFTMN ( Couch Scene where sinb shadows Eunha , Choreo as well ) , Sunrise ( Fingertip ending eunha crying while a sleep , Sunrise Ending Sinb Crying While A sleep ) , Apple MV ( They Two Kissing The same apple ). This time , we actually see the two of them in similiar Outfits , Short hair , Same set Of earrings , And pearl Necklace.
THEORY 1
My theory also is that not only are Eunha and Sinb Related .. but also Umji.. the scene at the start , where Umji and Sinb appear out of nowhere next to eunha just keeps bugging me.
Then it occured to me how GFRIEND like using Greek Myth aa part of their Storyline ( Orion the hunter and artemis in Fingertip ) , ( Artemis and apollo in TFTMN ) , ( Ariadne and theeseus in labyrinth portion of apple ).
Eunha , Umji , and Sinb reminded Me of the Greek of goddess of the night ( girls only meet at night / Dreams ).
Witchcraft and Magic ( Apple Mv +magic grantedby the love whisper lake ) , and Crossroad ( Overall theme ) = HECATE
She has 3 Faces that signify her dominion over the stars , The sea and The underworld , these face are each represented by Twin eunha + Sinb With Umji as the dividing line.
Star : Eunha means Galaxy.. she is associated with Navillera ( Blue Butterfly of the Stars ) her butterflies in Apple Returned back to the stars .
Underworld : Sinb is the one who tempted Eunha to bite the apple ( Devils temptation )
Sea : Umji paper boat in summer rain .. she is in Summer rain Outfit in the butterfly Effect , the Aquarium Scene in Crossroad When Umji got Rejected by Yuju.
In eunha and sinb Kiss in apple MV , She is the apple ( MNET comeback Stage intro Where she has an apple on the Beambalance , as well as in concept Photos ). That divide the Stars ( Eunha ) and the underworld ( Sinb ) , The Sea pretty much divides The underworld and the Stars.
She was able To connect Sinb and Eunha , In Sunrise By completing the puzzle , She play piano Reflecting Eunha Who Play a piano and the same Music sheet.
Much like How the Sea Reflects the stars at night ..
THEORY 2
in the mirror dance scene Yuju has the word " Amour " while Eunha has the word " Angel " by their Belts , this refer to " CUPID " as Amour is His Latin Name , While He is in the form of a Cherub , A higher form of ANGEL.

Thank you for this gfriend deep dive and most especially thanks for the umji vocals praise and love which she definitely didn't get enough of during Gfriend days . as much as I loved yuju and Eunhas vocals umji definitely became my bias wrecker during summer rain era that was when I realized just how phenomenal her vocals were and she's just gotten better through the years
I'm really enjoying your deep dives into groups because I'm finding more and more songs from these groups that I like because of that I finally decide to subscribe to your channel. I love the songs I already knew from Gfriend but now I fell in love with a few more that I never heard before. Sunrise was he song that caught me off guard, I really like that song a lot. When you get to the Viviz or deep dive 3, I would love for you to do the Queendom performance of Time for the moon night, that version made me fall in love with that song.

GFRIEND the best kpop girl group ever ! I miss them.
Some background info on what gfriend is all about. So they debuted with Source Music which was at the time bankrupt. They didn't really pop until a viral clip of them performing me gustus tu on stage got popular. In this clip a lot of members slipped and fell due to poor conditions (Yuju broke some fingers). They endured and finished the show which then endeared them to the masses.
This was around the time they released Rough which pretty much blew them up. From there they built on their success with 71 music show wins. Source Music then got purchased by Hybe and dropped Gfriend soon after. Details of all this is vague at most, it was pretty much a shit show.
The Gfriend Lore/Storyline is mostly theory at best so I'll just explain what I believe it is.
School Era is mostly solidifying the girls friendship to each other and them during there 'Happy times' hence the whole everything is perfect aesthetic. They all have powers represented by Glass Beads but their powers make them fall apart as they grow older and their egos clash. Graduating around the Rough/Summer Rain Era. Similar to how when we leave school we disconnect from our friends, we grow up.
Eunha obtains a box of butterflies as shown in the books (We are now around Fingertip Era), each butterfly allows her to turn back time. This is where we can see all the fighting between the girls as their friendship falls apart. Eunha witnesses Sinb straight up shoot Yerin on the rooftop in fingertip and Eunha uses a butterfly to turn back time in order to try and save everyones friendship (dramatically falling off the rooftop she wakes up and they are all friends again).
Next TFTMN/Sunrise I think is a compilation of scenes where the girls are back together but the cracks start showing again (Yerin crying etc). Eunha knowing the future is mostly sad knowing that inevitably they will break up which is why she's always the observer.
Next in Crossroads Era, the beginning shows Eunha using a butterfly in the beginning so basically she failed in trying to keep them together. She's now in a space where she's upset and again we see the members fall out again with all the infighting. I think this is where she decides not to go back and try to fix things anymore. The lyrics (there's subs you can turn them on now) basically saying no matter what happens they will find each other and work through there issues.
Apple Era is basically their 'we will do whatever the fuck we want' like eating the forbidden apple, burning trees and walking on the dinner table' time. Kind of accepting that they are witches with powers and that they can co exist. Eunha releases the butterflies signifies her acceptance of fate. Mago represents this with them having fun together now as grown adults embracing each others differences and partying long into the night. Overall a happy ending... thats how I like to see things anyway.
I wish they could still be together and still performing together. 😢😢😢

How to pronounce Romanized korean names (generally) - GF version;
S+i is pronounced "Shi-" e.g. SinB = Shin-Bi. Only "Si-" is pronounced this way due to the restriction of the spoken Korean language. There's no "See" sound.
U-consonant = "Au-" like August, so Umji = Aum-Ji. This is how a lot of the words are written when romanized. Sometimes they are written differently as well, e.g. Jeong/Jung.
E is Ae sound like "when", e.g. Yerin= Ye-rin
O can be "O" sound or "Au" sound, in Sowon's case, her name is pronounced So-Won with "O" for So and "AU" for Won.
Eunha; her name is composed of 2 syllable Eun-Ha. Eu- is a vowel sound that many western languages do not utilized. So it might take some time to familiarized. Examples of eu- sounds in korean words are: Yep-peun=beatiful , Nap-peun=bad, Yu-reum=Summer
Finally, Yuju, it's Yoo-Joo. She is one of the best vocalists. Love her

GFriend was very lucky debuting at that time. They debuted right around when Jessica was kicked out of Girls’ Generation and SinB looked remarkably like her older sister, and the high kick choreography made you think of the group as well. It did spark of fuss with their fandom but it did gave them notice which is a good thing.
After that, Me Gustas Tu got people noticing how in sync they are and it made them known worldwide when SinB and Yuju fell constantly during a performance.
It gave them a spot in the top girl groups when Rough was released. It ultimately holds them a spot in the tier list. It was pure. It made Koreans love them and the amount of Yuju singing in every final chorus just became more memorable. The electric guitar and the schoolgirl concept was the defining moment that makes people know GFriend. Even the running moment, they were doing it before Loona. If you debuted right now without a diffirentiating factor, you’ll fade in the background.
So in a way, they were lucky debuting at that time. Source Music got noticed because of them but the pay back of letting them go like that is a disgrace. It was a business move from a third party (probably) but the company should have fought for the six girls. They work hard for the company.
