  • Day 3 was a day we venture out further away from the Taipei city by visiting two towns in the mountains, Shifen and Jiufen. We were happy with the public transport using trains and buses but it requires some pre-planning and then courage. It is possible to visit both old streets in a single day.
These is the summary of each attractions we visited in sequence:
    1. **Ruifang Station**:
Ruifang Station (瑞芳站) is a railway station in New Taipei, Taiwan, served by Taiwan Railways. It was opened in 1919 and is located at 82 Sec 3 Mingdeng Rd, Ruifang. The station is a transfer point for visitors traveling to Jiufen, Pingxi, and other destinations along the northeast coast. It's also the best place to transfer to the Pingxi Line, where you can purchase one-day pass tickets .
    2. **Shifen Old Street**:
Shifen Old Street (十分老街) is a popular tourist attraction in Taiwan. Located on the Pingxi Railway Line, visitors flock here to write wishes on sky lanterns and release them from the train tracks. The street features narrow alleyways, teahouses, souvenir shops, and distinctly Taiwanese snacks. It's best to visit in the morning or early evening to avoid crowds. The lanterns light up around sunset .
    3. **Shifen Waterfall**:
Shifen Waterfall (十分大瀑布) is a scenic waterfall in Pingxi District, New Taipei City. It's situated on the upper reaches of the Keelung River. The falls are 20 meters (66 ft) tall and 40 meters (130 ft) wide, making it the broadest waterfall in Taiwan. The riverbed consists of potholes caused by the uneven flow of the river, creating vortexes that carve holes in the rock. Visitors can access the waterfall easily from Shifen station .
    4. **Jingan Suspension Bridge**:
Jingan Suspension Bridge (靜安吊橋) is a hanging bridge near Shifen station. Constructed during the coal-mining era, it offers beautiful views of the river. The bridge vacillates as you walk on it, so it's not recommended for those with a fear of heights. It's an interesting photo spot in Shifen .
    5. **Jiufen Old Street**:
Jiufen (九份) is a mountaintop former gold mining town in New Taipei City. Its Old Street is a tourist magnet, featuring narrow alleyways, stairs, teahouses, and Taiwanese snacks. Visit in the morning or early evening to avoid crowds. Spending the night allows you to enjoy the streets before and after tourists arrive. The nighttime view from teahouses or accommodations is breathtaking .
