  • Lisa and I just filmed this basic 101 intro on sailing L'Aventure. We want to make going on a voyage with us even more fun. We love when you participate with us sailing our Lagoon 380. Lisa asks many of the questions that come up on a sail as well as clarified many things for her own understanding. We hope you find this informative and makes your next journey with us even more relaxing!

Thank you for taking the time to produce this video. I haven't sailed a boat since I was five in the bathtub. I'm about to retire and am looking at getting a catamaran and learning to sail into my second childhood. I really appreciate the video. Thank you.

Thanks for this. I too did a lot of sailing with my husband on our previous catamaran but never paid attention. Now I am on my own I have once again acquired a catamaran and must properly learn to sail her.

Thanks for checking in, will tell Lisa. This is absolutely the reason we are doing these. Lisa wants to finally know what is going on and share her journey especially with other women. She will be delighted at your comments! Janet, keep tuning in, a lot more content coming on this subject as we sail from the Bahamas back to SC. Thanks so much for following us!

Very nice general overview for new sailors. I have just a couple additional comments. As I'm sure you know, not all cats are created equal. For example, many cats can run with their main while reach or running dead downwind. On these points of sail (150 or below), I nearly always run wing on wing with my main and genoa or code 0 if I'm flying it in light winds. The second comment I would make is that it's airways a good idea to keep the critical lines / working sheets wrapped on the wenches as well as clutched.

Great comments! We keep lines under load clutched and /or firmly secured to the appropriate winch too. Thanks for adding this clarification!

Thanks so much! Lisa has been asking me to do this with her for a year and we had such fun filming it. We hope this will help many others get comfortable with some of the concepts of sailing and language of sailing.

Very well done for your viewers who are not very familiar with sail info. This is important info for everyone & you do not see much of its without a lot of research.

Exactly, then they are more comfortable coming on your boat and already understand the basics of your boat 🙂

was hoping for a 101 instruction, how ever you use sailing teminology 401 when left, right, front, back are what most 101 people understand.
    Disappointed, but appreciate the effort.

We appreciate your feedback. When I was much younger I was a Red Cross sailing instructor. I taught basic sailing and the first section in our teaching materials was learning basic terminology. You need to have a basic understanding so you can communicate aboard as well as also understand advice given by more experienced sailors. The sailing language evolved over 100s of years and is mostly universal so all sailors can understand.. .

Does anyone know of a good book that explains this same stuff that I could study?

Yes, US Sailing has a series of books that are well written and well illustrated! Basic Keelboat, Basic Cruising are 2. You can find them on Amazon.
