  • Deer Hunting Buck Season 2014. Follow John Royer as he hunts for whitetail bucks during the 3rd day of the Pa rifle gun season in Clarion county. John decides to go after the deer on foot. Sneaking and stalking through the woods. John passes on a nice 10 point buck and grunts in a nice 8 point with a broken main beam. John shares his thoughts on deer hunting throughout the video. John is using a Remington 7mm Mag with Hornady SST bullets.

    Some of the most entertaining footage of whitetail hunting I've seen in a long time...especially so, since the terrain and the still-hunting method reminds me of NC PA, where I fought the whitetail wars for 50 years...going back to when there was no separate season for flintlocks...archery only after Christmas back in the '60s...plus small game...Congratulations...very fun to watch.

    Totally enjoy the passion you show through your videos. I hunt Crawford County in WMU 1B. The deer are plentiful. We mostly take does for meat. When we take a buck it is something that makes a memory. Having to positively identify three points per side irrespective of the brow tine makes a hunter spend more time observing and less time shooting. I believe the discipline has made us all better stewards of this resource. I have the utmost respect for your ethics and am honored to share Penns Woods with you. Great video.

      Thanks! I have had the same mindset when I first started hunting. Just turned 30 last month and I have killed only 3 buck of a lifetime. 2 with a bow and one with a rifle. 05-06-07. I havent killed a buck since 07. But my freezer has been full every year. The bucks I see most likely will get shot during the season. But like I said I stand for principle and to show that, yes, it can be done in an area with the mindset of " if its brown its down". Im off to Hopefully film my wife shoot a doe today. Thanks for the support!

    It's amazing to me at the complete lack of knowledge that people have on deer and deer management based on some of these comments. I also live in PA and hunt the NE section of the state and I am familiar with the if it's brown its down mentality. What most PA hunters fail to realize is that our state has the genetics to produce big buck, I've seen 2 buck killed this year pushing the 200" mark. What we lack is age in this state. Let the young bucks mature and shoot your does and you too will have this "fantasy world" of hunting on your property. Keep up the great work and keep the videos coming.

    That 10 point in this video. Real symmetrical and high tines (other than the one broken off.) Wouldn't be the least bit surprised if that's the same buck John got with the 30-40 krag last year. In which case, it really does pay to pass up on the littler ones. (For those complaining about trophy vs meat hunting. Best for the herd and the freezer to eat does and let the bucks get more mature. PA antlerless tags usually give plenty of ability to fill the freezer so you don't have to shoot a smaller buck for meat. You can let them grow.)

    Some nice bucks there. I hunt public land in Lehigh and carbon county and seen a lot of nice bucks this year. I hunt 5c so doe season comes early. Gun season here on public land gets a crazy amount of pressure and usually pushes the deer to the private property or makes them move well after legal hunting hours but I never see anyone hunting late muzzleloader or archery. I will be out late muzzleloader and checking my trap line. Good luck with the flintlock this season. Also looking forward to some trapping videos.

    Great video! I appreciate the different aspects of the hunt John. I enjoy your videos.
    In a comment below, you mention how you used orange once, was busted and now it hangs up.
    I can tell you, without a doubt, orange doesn't matter and neither do solids. It's all movement and smells. 100%
    I hunt in Ontario, Canada and we have to wear solid blaze orange - 400 or 460? square inches (no orange breakup camo allowed - completely illegal for us up here). This is for rifle hunting. Bow hunting we're allowed to go all camo (as long as it's bows only season).
    Anyhow, I've shot deer in all situations - watching, dogging and my most favourite - still hunting. So have my buddies. This year, I was still hunting in snow and walked super slo mo (it seemed :) right through 2 pine trees and gently stood into an opening where a deer was walking towards me. He didn't see me move at all. Bang. Dead deer. It was fantastic and I won't ever forget it.
    So I have to respectfully disagree that solids make a difference. I don't think they do. If you think about it, there are plenty tree types out there like beech and pines where are fairly solid. It's movement and smells for the whitetails that matter the most. Mind those and you put yourself in a winning position :)
    I say you take that solid orange suit out again and give it a shot. I bet you'd do just fine. :)

    I’m glad to see that you like myself have figured out that deer can see blaze orange. I don’t know what color they see it as, and I’m not a game biologist, but I know from experience that deer see blaze orange. No ifs, ands, or buts about it, they see it.

  • @dillangray1292

    It’s amazing what letting that buck go one more year to see what he grew into the next year because if I’m not mistaken that is the 10 point that you shot in 2015 but he was obviously a year younger and it is amazing to see just how much his body got he is twice the size in 2015.
    I also wish that where I hunt in PA that we had the problem that you have with so many doe it used to be in Sullivan County where my family has a hunting cabin if you saw 15 deer on one day you had a bad day in the woods during rifle now your lucky if you see a deer every 2 years I wish they would go back to the 2 day doe seasons in our area to replenish the herd but they probably wont

    • @Leatherwoodoutdoors2
      @Leatherwoodoutdoors2  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes I do believe that this was the buck that i shot in 2015. I actually filmed him in this video only a couple hundred yards away from where I killed him in 2015. Although, passing deer up is really hard to do, but it could pay off.

    Nice vid love it again and we have a little 40 acre property and the deer are just in our woods to eat acorns we hinge cut and they are still not their they eat acorns and then corn or clover or beans and then leave its weird. I was just wondering how long it took u to grow those pines because that will hopefully get them to live in our woods thanks.

    Believe it or not this is one of my favorite videos ya'll have put out. It's hard enough sneaking up on a deer and you did it with a camera and orange on!
    great video.

    • @Leatherwoodoutdoors2
      @Leatherwoodoutdoors2  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Zach! Its definitely a challenge with the camera. I dont do this often with the camera because its just to difficult to pull it all off. But I really wanted to get a good sneak hunt on film just to show others that it can be done. I know the orange wasnt a big deal because I have done this for years. Its just when your in low light conditions and your head is possibly the first thing the deer is going to notice, I just dont like wearing a solid colored UV bright hat when moving. Even if its Not UV enhanced. Just easier for deer to spot solids when moving. But I like the solid hat because I want other hunters to know Im coming up over the bank loud and clear.

    • @ZachByrd
      @ZachByrd 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear ya man. For me it's more of the solid color/human outline of the orange that causes that increases the challenge. You did a heck of a job getting it on film. You guys are bringing the best footage on youtube and I will continue watching and sharing. I wished I had a group of individuals that were in to hunting here in Georgia like I am. I tried to do a drive a couple of weeks ago and was only able to get one person to tag along! The deer just doubled back of course. I noticed in the video that there was running water in the background near some of these encounters. Does this play a role in where you choose to try and sneak? I'm asking because here in Georgia, the only time I'm ever able to get that close to deer is either when the wind is blowing or when the leaves are damp after or during a rain. Keep up the great work guys!

    John, what are your thoughts on the SST bullets? I tried them in my .308 last year and found that the bullet fragmented a lot more than I cared for. I still had a clean kill but it ended up causing one heck of a mess. I'm trying the Hornady GMX this year but haven't gotten a shot yet.

    • @Leatherwoodoutdoors2
      @Leatherwoodoutdoors2  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I havent really been able to test them the way I wanted to. I have only killed one deer with them. That was back in 2011. the deer was 5 yards lol. I cant tell much at that distance. I need a good 100 yard broadside behind the shoulder shot to tell me how good they work. I use them because Ron in the previous video had used them in his 30-06 before and they did a great job. I have heard of others that said that the SST's are hit or miss. come calibers work better with them than others. I havent heard of anyone talk about an SST that fragmented as much as yours. So I dont know when Ill kill another deer with my rifle. It may be a long time. But I will surely be using the SST's till I have a better Idea of what they do. Here is the video of the doe I shot, granted, you cant tell much by a 5 yard shot. th-cam.com/video/35kxwIf_9Uk/w-d-xo.html

    yes ! I totally agree very true here in Alabama too about brown and down how ever I refrained many times too let a few walk .they may get shot down the holler but I have gave them a chance. I hunt some private land but mostly WMA's I've been hunting regularly since age 11 so 20 years now and i always say never come back from the woods without something... that is too say you learn every time you go in .I'm there either morning , midday or noon .or all day but you should learn and bring back something every time whether you get a deer or not and I prefer a doe over a buck for meat certainly after rut kicks in the buck meat has a Wang too it not taste but a doe is always eating and healthy and prime .I've learned a great deal about deer by watching there Interactions with each other but no.1 priority is fill the freezer.

    Great video. You can tell when someone is truly in love with what they are doing. I know that deer up there are a lot different than here in Northeast Texas, but that last deer with the broken antler seemed a lot older than 3 to me. He was awfully thick and rag-tag looking. I thought it would have been at least 5 1/2. I found it funny though, that the deer would have been illegal to kill in most Texas counties because of the antler restrictions in place. Must be 13" wide or have at least one unbranched antler. That deer didn't meet either qualification. Sucks sometimes. Anyway.....I loved the video. Keep 'em coming.

    • @Leatherwoodoutdoors2
      @Leatherwoodoutdoors2  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! Wow haha just imagine if we would have an antler restriction like that! Although you guys can shoot two buck right? We used to have antler restrictions to 4 points on a side a few years ago. Now its just 3 up. No brow tine included. Although Most of Pa is 3 on a side, brow tine is included. I would like to see it be a bit more restrictive. That buck did look a little rough but that was because he was coming out for a fight. He looked like a fighter and his hair was standing up on end the whole time. Made him look alittle bigger than what he really was. Watch this video for a big buck. Its the biggest buck I have ever seen in Pa while hunting. This is what a 4 1/2 - 5 1/2 year old pa buck should look like. th-cam.com/video/15wit12svH4/w-d-xo.htmlm6s

      @five0pd310 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most counties here are 2 buck but only one can have a 13" spread. Two bucks with an unbranched antler can be taken, but then you wouldn't be able to take a large buck. Doe regulations vary from county to county and the dates from which they can be taken also differ.

    Awesome video! I wish there were more people like you passing up immature deer here in NY. But I'll have to disagree about the blaze orange, I have NEVER seen a deer react to orange at all... I've had them as close as 10ft during gun season and I may as well have been wearing full camo. I'll say that blaze orange with the black "breakup" lines in it seems better but not by much. There are a lot of legendary trackers and still hunters that wear plaid and it doesn't have any effect on their success. Otherwise keep the videos coming!

    Right on big John. Leave the smaller ones go and you end up with alot bigger ones around down the road. With some real trophies outsmarting that will survive us too.

    Hey john what's the biggest buck you've killed

    • @Leatherwoodoutdoors2
      @Leatherwoodoutdoors2  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Brandon Hagaman My biggest buck was in 2006 with a bow. It scored almost 140 gross. Made P&Y record book. Thats an incredible size buck for where I hunt. the philosophy around here is " if its brown its down"

  • @charger7022

    John What grunt call are you using?? I shot the twin of that last buck last year in the ANF in forest county. The one I shot didn't have a broken beam just an 8" spike with a fork. Kinda makes me wonder it that gene is going around. I looked and looked at the one you filmed and It kinda looks like it grew that way.

    • @Leatherwoodoutdoors2
      @Leatherwoodoutdoors2  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its a flextone buck collector deer call. Not every call of the same make will sound good blowing really hard. Mine is average but i havent tried any other calls out to see if there are any better ones out there. I thought when I looked at the footage that he broke the main beam right past the brow. Never did give me a great look at the other side. But I do believe that there could be a gene running around with the "bad side". I have see bucks like that before. That sound like an awesome buck for the ANF!

      I posted a picture of the deer on leatherwoods facebook page not as big but nice none the less. I shot him chasing a group of 3 does about a 1/2 hr before dark the 1sr day last year.

    It looks like the big half rack you passed might be the same buck your brother ended up shooting in 2016 (split brow on right side and similar rack) and the 10 point you passed ended up being your 30-40 krag buck, goes to show the benefits of passing deer!

    Another thing I was bow hunting and I was in my tree stand all day the deer were looking at me and ran off. Every time I pulled back for a shot they ran away. Please respond to me thank you.

    • @Leatherwoodoutdoors2
      @Leatherwoodoutdoors2  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Brandon Hagaman You must use the wind in your favor. Or your treestand stick out and they are picking you out against the sky and backround. Try moving your stand so the wind doesnt blow to the deer.

    • @berniew5618
      @berniew5618 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Try to wait for the deer's head to be behind a tree not looking at you. Then draw back so they don't see your movement. I have bad shoulders so I gave up bow to use crossbow and I can't shoulder the bow until they have there heads behind the trees. Learned that the hard way.

    • @RalphERo824
      @RalphERo824 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brandon Hagaman I use ladder stands as I am getting older and it is hard to climb in the climbers. The deer know where my stands are but I get my bow ready when I see them. I then wait until the deer is looking away or it's head is behind a tree. I only draw my bow when the time is right and do it before the deer reach the shooting lane I have chosen on their path. You have to start way before they get to you or they catch your movement and bust you everytime. Good luck and move early.

    john I was looking back at us 2011 rifle video u this buck might be the same buck from 2:09 in that video? ik that would make him a pretty old buck but I mean he does look pretty old.

    • @Leatherwoodoutdoors2
      @Leatherwoodoutdoors2  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +PAoutdoorhunters I dout that it would be him. That would make him at least 5 years old and I dont think he is that old. I am guessing him at 3 1/2.

    • @PAoutdoorhunters
      @PAoutdoorhunters 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Leatherwoodoutdoors2 Hey , you are actually giving out false information. In PA, the only time you can use a buck tag for a doe is during the late flintlock season. NOT RIFLE or archery. PA game commission has this on their website and its printed in the hunting regulations books.

    what is the wheight of a really big buck?
    i come from Norway so i dont know the wheights of the deer you have there.

    • @Leatherwoodoutdoors2
      @Leatherwoodoutdoors2  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      A really big buck around here would weight around 180 - 200 lbs gutted or field dressed. Most deer shot average 130 lbs field dressed.

    • @xxxcrazyxxxmanxxx
      @xxxcrazyxxxmanxxx 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for the reply :D
      The deer we have in Norway are a little bit bigger, my grandfather shot a buck 286 pounds a couple of years ago, bet that was a big one. but there is also many in the 130 pound class ;)
