It's not really a surprise Led Zepp's music still connects with you, you've got to appreciate the band were in their early 20's when they wrote these songs. They were using elements of past music and then totally making it their own, simple blues songs taking on epic proportions in their hands. After the first few albums they branched out into many styles, whilst never loosing elements of those early influences. Their live performances were another experience, as a well oiled machine they could considerably stretch out the album tracks and improvise with both masterly precision or wild fluidity.

Another rap reactor said he never listened to rock music because he thought it was just people screaming. When he heard the lyrics to the song he was reacting too he wanted to hear more because he realized that there is more to rock music than being loud. I thought that was very mature and cool to admit that. Hope you are enjoying your journey of discovery.

I am the Led Zeppelin generation and the music instrumentation the guitar riffs the drum grooves were the lyrics! We never paid attention to what the song really was about until later years when you actually sat down and listen to the lyrics and see what the song is about!

I am an old lady now, but I did see Led Zeppelin in the early 70s twice in concert

If you have time, search You Tube for Ramble On, Isolated Bass.....you can hear the utter brilliance of John Paul Jones' basswork on this epic track. Somewhere during the playing of this live at the O2 arena in 2007 (yes, the first time completely played live), Zep kicked into another gear and transformed the O2 show into a miracle.

Led Zeppelin attracted me as a kid because of their switch ups - kings of transition along with Yes and Rush etc. but I always loved that they mentioned J.R.R. Tolkien stuff like Gollum slipped away with her or Wring Wraiths. I was deep into the Hobbit and Lord of the rings at this same time. Two legends intertwined was too good to ignore!

Zeppelin's music was all about exploration and the dichotomies of "light and shade", "fast and slow", "whisper to the thunder", etc. Each album was different, had a different feel, and resonance. Even the songs within the album showed constant exploration to present a sonic landscape that touched on many parts. Personally, I find the vocals to often be an accompanying instrument which makes it easier to connect to the experience as a whole.

Yeah really good points you made. And this is one of my favorite songs of theirs although I have so many. But I think in this one the most amazing thing is how well John Bonham's really interesting and syncopated drum part is, he really drags that kick around the back beat and then combine that with John Paul Jones bass guitar line and they work together like a machine. It's got to be one of my most favorite bass guitar lines in rock music. It's got that rambling half walking spaciousness to it that still gives a really rolling energy to it, and then the drums come in and the bass gets a lot more busier, and now suddenly it's really funky.

Led Zep fans often refer to this song as the "Tolkien" or "Lord Of The Rings" song, because of the references to Mordor, Gollum and The Evil One, all parts of the LOTR story. I really like John Bonham's rapid little sub-beat that goes through the song. Jimmy, John Paul and Robert all make valuable contributions to the music and feel of the song. Gotta Ramble On....

This is one that I've really grown to appreciate more and more over the years. John Paul Jones' bass motif is the X factor here, takes the song to a different level. Funny you should use this song to make your comments about lyrics, because one of the reasons I used to not like this song as much IS the lyrics, how they randomly throw in the Tolkien motif near the end for no reason other than they apparently really like Tolkien. But with this song, I really do think the mood of wistfulness and lonesomeness that music produces far outweighs the actual words, and I have come to actually embrace this track.

Ah, a time when people knew how to play musical instruments together and even improvise together. Great music. You should listen to Led Zeppelin's song 'Kashmir' which is inspired by some of their experiences travelling through Morocco and the music they heard there from tribespeople there.

I was 15 when this came out and when I think of Zep, this is the song that fills my memories.
