@@sjh100975 Zeppelin was using the latest technology available to them. Just like today’s artists are using computers. Can’t hate today’s experimentation while loving the the experimentation of the classics. Zep aligned the stars so it’s just not fair to compare the pioneers of the 70s to modern music. Bc in 50 years, who’s to say which artist of “now” will be considered pioneers in 2070.

  • @martynrogers4810

Something no one is mentioning is this album came out at a time when a lot of artists were experimenting with the effect of sound within the mixing. Sending parts left to right, having trippy effects was as much experimenting with sound as it was a result of experimenting with drugs lol and for the most part, the breakdown section is something they expend massively in life performances. While it doesn’t come off as much in this, the main juxtaposition is there for when the guitar riff comes back in.
Would love to see you react to this whole album, it’s the opener off their second which is one of their best 👏

from a contemporary pov, that's not necessarily true
as a band top 20 sure, Stairway to Heaven though top 3
the criteria for these golden oldies are asking someone born after 2000 to name top 5 of best songs of an artist from 2010 backward, if 5/5 then u could say under 10 and I believe there's no "the best" in top 10 just 50 names sharing top 10; otherwise where u put Tom Petty or Iggy Pop
Like. Queen, Boh Rap, Rocku, Radio Gaga, We the Champs
      but not only OOOOLD
      that includes 50, Wayne, Em...
music changes, "the best criteria changes" its always been like.... hm like Godfather, no one even dares to mumble a bad word about it, its a classic and everyone knows it but no man living can say I've seen that movie multiple times.
its always a mix of *quality X appeal X time X personal Opinion*

Without them, music wouldn't be the same. They've inspired artists in damn near every genre, obviously rock, hip hop production, r&b, electronic, pick a genre. I rarely listen to led zeppelin, just not really my kind of music, but at their time they were gods amongst men.

Also why I like Stevie's reactions: he'll honestly say when he's heard a song before. Like he said in this intro. How he could've randomly come across one of their songs in life.

I also like how Stevie will tell you he 'heard' a song before, but that he never really 'listened to it'. Meaning he heard it, but didn't pay attention to the lyrics, and when he does it opens up a new experience of depth or understanding.
Stevie has some of the most 'honest' reactions around. Either 1st time hearing something, or going back to something 'old' and simply paying attention with new understanding of writing and talent.

Personally I enjoy both of those songs or at least "just as good" to my ears as pretty much any other song I've heard from those 2 bands(although I do enjoy Kashmir, Achilles Last Stand, Dazed And Confused, and Sweet Home Alabama as well a lot). Both songs have really long build ups that tease you for a long time, with the payoff being an intense climax that catches my attention as a metal head.
I haven't listened to a ton of songs from either band though, I'm not big into classic rock personally. I tend to enjoy classic rock songs that are closely related to metal or classical music in sound/structure.

1969 was a time of psychedelic music and experimental sounds....Zeppelin had a couple of songs that really delved into that.....most notably this and especially the song Dazed and Confused. Robert Plant was one of the first “Rock Gods”...in fact, he was often referred to as The Golden God because of his gorgeous mane of hair. Jimmy Page was God of guitar back then. John Bonham was and still considered one of the top five rock drummers of all time and many consider him the best. John Paul Jones did bass, keyboards, mandolin and was and still is an amazing musician. Zeppelin fame came from their albums and from their live concerts. They did not release singles. Live they often played for over three hours....and were famous for improvisations on the fly....Each member was tops in their field and together they made a MONSTROUS legend of a band. And had huge influence on hard rock. Watch them live.....You would love Black Dog from the MSG 1973 concert. Or, for sexy as hell blues...watch Since I’ve Been Loving You from the same concert. That will show you how charismatic they were.....absolutely mesmerizing onstage.

Good to see this video... I am a 67 year old white boy that saw Zeppelin live in 1970 and 1974.... back when tickets were less than $10 dollars and the woman were there to play.... good time to live. I went to Page and Plant in 1995 reunion and it cost $ 135 bucks.... still worth it to see them live on stage.

As popular as they were they were still experimental with sounds.. In rock music there are times where the instrumentation was the highlight as they actually all played their own music. In that break down the guitarist actually uses a bow from a double bass/violin to play the electric guitar.. Its sort of a psychedelic moment to drift off with the vibe.. Its like a moment of mumble rap in a lyrical rapper song, not about the vocals as much as the vibe and feeling.. same with a lead guitar break, just close your eyes Stevie, sit back and enjoy those moments.
You have to remember that bands in the 60s and people attending shows were more open to drugs like lsd and cannabis to enhance writing, performing or attending a show. Listen to The Beatles and tell me they werent experimenting with drugs while doing music... given, not all bands were into drugs etc but pretty sure Led Zepplin were.

This is my favorite band of all time, low key. Physical Graffiti is a masterpiece. If you ever wanna feel something, go watch the tribute to Led Zeppelin, that the band Heart did. It's basically the female equivalent at the time, and the singer wrote one of their biggest hits about the guitarist from Zep, Jimmy Paige. (Magic Man, is the song). Shit will make you cry!

If any one is wondering what the instrument is in the breakdown of this song in the middle is thats creating that crazy sound, it is a theremin, jimmy page used a sonic wave theremin for this song. One of led zeppelins greatest songs. Trust me, they are all great.

The music is what brought us together back in the '60s and '70s. Kids from California to Maine and New York to Texas and everywhere in between listened to the same music and it became a movement that helped end the Viet Nam war and helped the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Bill become law. We did this without the Internet or even cell phones because the music was the wake up call that brought us together to march and peacefully protest for civil rights, women's rights, peace, equal employment opportunity, and all the other social issues we worked to change. I believe without the musical revolution of the '60s and '70s this country would be a lot different and worse today. I wish we had music like that now so we could come together and end the terrible divisions we are living with. Like John Lennon said, "All we are saying, is give peace a chance". "Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one"...✌️❤️

The middle part: Not just "LSD", but i.e. an interlude w. instrumental play on "the rush of sex", plus Led Zep tunes take you on a journey, a trip! Oftentimes you're not gonna find you're the regular song structure, but very different parts, tempi, themes etc. It's part of what makes their music so awesome. Also, that was pretty common in a lot of 1960s music.

You are absolutely right about what this is about and they were INFAMOUS for it. Grab a biography of theirs next time you travel, you will not believe the shit they got up to.
That minute instrumental in the middle is what was expected of them back in the day, to just jam. This is the era of Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, you had to jam.
Is you watch him move while he's singing you'll be in NO doubt as to what he means by these lyrics. 😁
I loved your reaction to this Stevie, it was so pure. These boys were the original freaks. Black Dog would be an epic one for you to react to! Thanks for doing this one, it seriously made my day.

Brother, when these bands were kids there were American blues bands touring Europe. Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf all toured Europe and England inspiring bands like Led Zeppelin, Cream, Black Sabbath and later Fleetwood Mac and AC/DC. The blues were KEY in the making of Rock-n-Roll around the world.
