  • Seldom do you find an old car like this, even rarer is it restored to original. This car features correct Moonlite Cream paint and is powered by its original 216 cubic inch stovebolt-six paired with the Power Glide 2-speed automatic transmission. The interior is restored to original as well. This car features fender skirts, gravel guards, a power convertible top, and 6-volt generator charging system. Wow. I wouldn’t have believed that a Chevy of this era would have a power convertible top.

    I had one of these beauties when I was in college, many years ago. Mine also had the 2 speed Powerglide transmission. The car was very slow, very reliable and built like a tank. They are becoming quite collectible today.

    The power glide option was mated to a 235 CID version of the stovebolt six. the 216 was used with three on the tree.

    Nice car, excelent video. Only one comment: Chevrolet Power Glide cars were equipped with 235 cubic inches engine, not the 216 of the cars equipped with standard transmission.
    For 1951 Power Glide cars, the engine developed 105 H.P. I had one of this cars many years ago. His acceleration was modest, but it reached at open roads about 95 miles an hour, much better than three on the tree modest top speed.

    Did the radio have to "warm up" before coming on? Is it a tube radio?

      You bet! Everything from base-models to luxury cars in that era had tuned radios that had to warm up. I owned two such models: a 1950 Pontiac Chieftan hardtop and a 1954 Ford Customline four-door sedan. My step-brother and a high-school friend of mine drove '51 Chevys: the former a two-door hardtop with a 3-speed manual; the latter a rour-door sedan with the poweglide. Both had radios like that shown in the subject convertible. The first car I ever owned that had a tubeless radio was a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 two-door Fastback.

    Steve McQueen drove one like this in a movie I seen .cant Remember the name though.

    • @richardgreathouse9702
      @richardgreathouse9702 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cecil Shivers. The movie you are speaking of is The Hunter, in which Steve McQueen portrays the late Ralph 'Papa' Thorsen, a modern bail agent (read bounty hunter). The '51 Chevy convertible used in the film looks like the subject of this video, but had a three-speed manual, which McQueen's character constantly ground the gears, parked crookedly and generally acted less than competently behind the wheel. (It must have been a real ordeal for McQueen, a very good amateur racer in his private life.)

    • @richardgreathouse9702
      @richardgreathouse9702 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cecil Shivers. PS -- The Hunter was Steve McQueen's last film. He died of lung cancer in 1980, a year or two after making it.

    And I want to make it convertible
    Is yours stock

    • @samspace81
      @samspace81  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very nice, yes it was. If I were you I'd keep it a closed car or find a real cvt to build, more work and worth less in the end for a conversion. Thanks for following Samspace81

  • @mrchevy70
    @mrchevy70 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's not a "stovebolt six. The next gen. Chevy inline six, had "stovebolts" holding the valve cover down, thus the name stovebolt stuck. The engine in that chevy is the earlier 216 ci which had two studs sticking through the cover with acorn nuts on them.

    • @samspace81
      @samspace81  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mrchevy70 Yes it is a 216, thanks for that information!

    • @samspace81
      @samspace81  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      mrchevy70 OK, so turns out this is a 235 block with a 216 head on it. Interesting

      @ninja63639 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 235 in 1950, '51, '52 and maybe '53 ('53 got the full pressure 235 so it may have the perimeter bolt vc) had the center bolt valve cover like the 216. My '51 Belair has the same motor
