Not enough people react to Tori Amos. I love her so much, but I think that some people don't understand her so maybe that's why. I'm so happy that you get it.

@@wellofcire i'm so glad i never understood her since when i first discovered her music, my english was only beginner level. now that i can not not hear the things she is saying, i enjoy it less tbh. especially mega cringe lyrics like i wanna smash them faces... christian boys... beautiful boys... just freaking kills the ieee experience for me. btw, atheist here. it's just so dumb to target all christian boys and wanting to smash their faces. that's what cringey. also some other songs has so in your face edgy feminism like "boy you better hope i bleed soon". i liked her musicianship and intensity but i honestly can't care less about her lyrics. in fact, if she were writing normal lyrics, she was 5x more famous now, at least.

She has always been compared with Kate Bush and they do have a lot in common, but if you spend time listening to both, you'll realize that comparisons are mostly superficial. They are very different songwriters and very different performers. Tori is a confessional poet and essayist and Kate is more of a performance artist and (in a sense) a musical short-story writer, as she tends to write about characters and sometimes about themes such as art and philosophies. Kate is a dancer and she incorporates dance into her performances; Tori certainly does not excel at dance, but she's an inarguably gifted piano prodigy and her compositions and playing are far more sophisticated than Kate's are. I say all this just to differentiate the two and to identify their respective qualities; none of this is a criticism. They're my two favorite artists.
Tori loves Kate but she claims other inspirations who can be heard in her music-there's no denying that Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro are strong influences, but so are Led Zeppelin (seemingly her favorite), the Beatles, Nina Simone and many others. She fancies herself a librarian, and she works from an immense catalog of influences.
I appreciate that this live Montreux performance from very early in Tori's career has caught on on TH-cam, but I am a little disheartened that people who listen to her often watch this video and love it and then watch nothing else. It's a great performance, granted. It represents a tiny sliver of her musical gifts. She is a musical genre unto herself and while she's best known for this type of performance-many people mistakenly associate her with Lilith Fair, at which she did not perform-she has recorded and performed everything from electronic and hard rock to classical to what might be called Baroque southern gothic harpsichord blues rock of her own invention. Please sample many more of her songs. She is endlessly surprising, and her poetic writing is unparalleled.
I've had the opportunity to interview her twice, and she is one of the few notable people (my favorite artist) I've spoken with who is 100 percent who I hoped she would be. She's an exception to the 'don't meet your heroes' adage.
Regarding her spirituality, I think of her as a shaman/medicine woman, and I feel like her classical album Night of Hunters was a soft 'coming out' as a medicine woman and Native Invader was a bold one (just check out the cover art). She's an extraordinary soul.

    • @bshows89
      @bshows89 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes. All of this. Also, Tori and Kate are nearly contemporaries. They're only a few years apart in age. That's not to suggest that you can't be influenced by your contemporaries - quite definitely musicians are influenced by the music of their own time. I think it's incorrect to suggest that she's following in Kate's footsteps or something to that effect. No one seems to mention that Tori was receiving musical training at the Peabody Institute at age 5 (the youngest person ever admitted). This was before Kate Bush, age 10 at that time, had even learned to play piano - that's how close they are in age. Kate's commercial career began before Tori's, but Tori was a musician first.

Other artists drinking from the other well IMO: Sinead O’Connor, Ani DiFranco, PJ Harvey, Pink Floyd, Cocteau Twins, Florence Welch, First Aid Kit, Joni Mitchell… so many greats. Thanks for the reaction.

No one is like Tori Amos and you’re right there’s something mystical about her. I completely fell in love with her when I was a young girl, watching her play the piano in blue crushed velvet bellbottoms just woke something up in me. Her lyrics are so haunting and powerful that they leave you thinking about them for days after. Tori is not only talented she has the power to make you feel things that you didn’t know you could feel, what she does is incredibly special and remarkably beautiful. There is no end to her talent.
Tori is an experience and I’m so happy you get that. She’s more than an artist and what you’re saying is what so many of us feel about her. I love seeing someone listen to her and just get it.

The way that she relates to the piano is so unique, it’s an extension of her in a way I’ve never seen another artist. She also has such a Specific way of saying Something, it’s intensely personal but inherently relatable, especially I think from a female perspective. Loving and accepting yourself separately from the way any other person perceives you (a parent, a lover) is the most difficult and necessary part of being a fully realized human.

Tori Amos is definitely someone unique in the music field.. she recently gave an interview (i think w/BBC) about how she created a new album in 2020, & then the pandemic hit, it got her (like many of us) to be severely affected to the point that she admits breaking down, scrapping that entire album, realizing she needed to approach songwriting from a very new approach.. hence her latest album "Ocean To Ocean".. you also mentioned Neil Gaiman: interesting because his most recent wife is Amanda Palmer.. now SHE is another rare gemstone in the proverbial rock pile.. hell, (like most of her songs) she made an extremely moving song & video that made me equally speechless & moved called "Voicemail For Jill" which never ceases to emotionally move me.. i HIGHLY recommend "experiencing" it.. thank you for your reaction!

Tori wrote a line "hanging out with the dream king" & Neil had a Sandmand character refer to herself as a "Cornflake girl" (also one of the incarnations of Delirium had a passing similarity in appearance to Tori). There were times when they were young struggling artists, she'd play a gig & sometimes he'd be the only one in the audience, so they became friends. :)

Until I discovered Florence Welch, Tori was basically my very favourite female vocalist like EVER, and yes, she is AMAZING live. Cornflake Girl is the very best thing she's ever done, closely followed by Caught a Lite Sneeze, Spark and Carbon. Winter is definitely the very best EVER example of her doing something very simple and stripped back, essentially just her and her piano (although the original studio recording also includes an orchestra which picks up in the latter half that adds some real power when she goes to that incredible build and payoff before the final chorus and she pulls it right back again). I also really recommend both Baker Baker and Hey Jupiter if you want more beautiful simplicity. (P.S. Interesting you compare her to Neil Gaiman since he is one of her closest friends - she was even one of the main inspirations for the character of Delirium in The Sandman, and Tori's name-checked him a few times in her songs.)

Since loving Tori it's like she's always written for my heart. Seeing her in concert is like someone blew a huge bubble and you float to Jupiter for a few hours. Nothing. Comes.close. you don't go to a Tori concert you experience, that's the only way I can describe it. Its the only concerts ice been too were when she starts singing the everyone shuts.the.fuck.up until it's a warrented clap. I could use a million words to describe her like honestly her in person is how I think is feel if I saw a real unicorn in life. She said something once that I think tho sums up that energy she has that's so different..I'd say most artists are like proud of their work which is fine however Tori said " taking credit for my songs is like a painter taking credit for the sunset. That's her honestly in a simple sentence that's why she's so deep because her selflessness is real.
If you're at a concert and your lucky enough to hear 'me and a gun' the audience is so quiet but it will actually get when quieter to like silence when she sings that song you could hear a pin drop and I really mean that.

Man, 80s 90s was a sweet spot for the alternative genre. Some of the bands and solo artists from that time are unmatched. Sting, Peter Gabriel, kate Bush, The Smiths, Sinead O'Connor, Annie Lennox. Just so so many.

I've seen her live 3 times. 1st time it was just her and a piano, and she was literally ft away from me. Other 2 times in larger venues. Spectacular every time. Do yourself a favor and go see her if you can. You won't be disappointed. She's hypnotizing live.

Tori Amos was one of Alanis Morissette's inspiration to make "Jagged Little Pill".
"Winter" is such a great song.
If you want to listen to something deeper and darker, check her song, "Me And a Gun", which she sings acapella, about a very personal experience.

Great reaction, some of my favorites are Agnes Obel - Dorian & The Curse, Aurora - 12345, Pomme (French lyrics but it's the feeling) On Brulera & Anxiete, and of course Ren - Hi Ren and much more💗💗💗

She has been tapped into the higher realms her entire life. There are a handful that I know of that are innately connected. This is turn speaks to the higher selves in us in the form of music.

You ain't seen nothing yet. Looking forward to your deep dive into Tori's discography. Interesting you mentioned Nel Gaiman, her best friend. He appears in several of her songs. Tori is about to tour North America with her band... Hope you get to see her. Tori live is even more next level.

Fantastic reaction and deeper conversation. To me the way you describe that you're busy living in the present. The now is the eternal continuum. Existence is always in the now regardless of which spiritual plane.
Now - as I've said since I a) first starting following you; Stevie Nicks is going to be another one of those spiritual, emotional, philosophical treasures for you and b) you have to react to her song Beauty and the Beast, particularly the live version that I shared on the Patreon some months back.
    BTW . . . IFLY! You're a treasure, and I'm happy to support your mission 💛

This is without a doubt one of my favourite musical performances I've ever seen. Her face is just as emotionally expressive as her voice, it's just captivating to watch.
I also really like what you said about artists drinking from different wells. As for recommendations of other artists like that, I'd really recommend Joanna Newsom. Truly one of a kind singer-songwriter. Her song Emily would probably be a good introduction

This is one of the best live performances by an artist. There's her talent of course, but the emotional message she can convey through her voice, body expressions and her musical instrument is unmatched.

Tori has been my favorite artist for almost 30 years. This will really age me but I accidentally got her CASSETTE TAPE from Columbia House. I think I missed the chance to send it back. I'm so glad I got that random tape in the mail. That was Under The Pink. I then immediately purchased Little Earthquakes and have purchased every album since.
She was my very first concert. You could hear a pin drop at a Tori show. Everyone is just mesmerized. I've seen her twice and both times....butterflies....goosebumps...ahhhh. There's just something about her. If you get it you are pulled in. It's magnetic.

I mean to any person who has been with a lover that you know your hopelessly holding on to that you shouldn't and how hard it hits you when she says * when you when you gonna make up your mind ? When you gonna love you as much as I do ,cause things are gonna change so fast * and I remember I broke down it hit me so hard.

Amen brother on your comments. The 90s with Peter Gabriel, Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Sting, I don't want to sound like my Dad but they don't make real Alternative music like they did during this period.(run on sentence) I keep hoping music today is going to wake the *uck up. But not holding my breath.
