A Tori song not often mentioned is Tear In Your Hand (also on Little Earthquakes), which is a song in a song in a song. Heartbreaking, intriguing, so intelligent, so very personal. Not to mention gorgeous. Here's a live version.
I’m just sad you listened to the shortened version of this song. It has one my favorite lyrics ever: “Got enough guilt to start my own religion.” So telling.
So deeply touched by your reaction to her music. Takes me right back to how moved I felt at 15 when I discovered her. I would love to hear your reaction to more of her songs, especially Jackie's Strength or Putting the Damage On, or her harpsichord tracks like Professional Widow or Blood Roses. Brilliant work! Can't wait to watch all of your reaction vids.
You have to check out more Tori! You will die and be reborn - no kidding. Especially since you play the piano - she has some epic songs that will blow your mind. "Precious Things" is a beast of a song - in the best way possible. I know so many women who said Tori's music saved them because she puts it all out there - no holds barred. We all have mad sexy crushes on Tori - even us straight women. So you're not alone - and you won't regret diving deeper. There are many albums that are "growers". Listen to them and let them seep into you - they reveal more with each listen. Go to her earlier work first like The Little Earthquakes album and definitely Boys For Pele. But there are also some killer songs in later albums. I saw her play live in concert in 2001 and she sat astride the piano stool - playing a grand piano and harpsichord at the same time - not as a party trick - but just playing the hell out of both instruments at the same time - amazing! Wanted to add - if you watch Precious Things - check out the live version 1998. She does something here that I saw her do in concert. She bows down at the front of the stage before the start of her performance. It's some kind of pre-show ritual. I don't know if it's something to do with her connecting to the "muses". She said an interview that "muses", beings of coloured lights appear to her - and these are the songs. Beings as in spirit beings. She said they appear as coloured lights and then she converts the colour into sound. Food for thought!
One of the rare artist i can hear everyday, and still having goosebumps 15 years After...😉 His duett live with Maynard from Tool of Muhammad My Friend is a masterpiece
I was raised Catholic and have always loved this song. Lyrically, musically, spiritually, religiously it captures something hard to define. Every finger in the room was pointing at me, want to spit in their faces yet afraid of what that could bring. Got a bowling ball in my stomach, got a desert in my mouth. Figures that my courage would choose to sell out now. I've been looking for a savior in these dirty streets, looking for a savior underneath these dirty sheets. I've been raising up my hands, drive another nail in. Just what God needs one more victim. Why do we, Crucify ourselves. Every day, I crucify myself. Nothing I do is good enough for you. I crucify myself. Every day, I crucify myself. My heart is sick of being, I say my heart is sick of being in chains. Every single human I know raised with Catholic guilt relates to this on a primordial level.
If this (unfortunately truncated) version of crucify caused such a powerful reaction you really need to check out winter or silent all these years as they pack even more of a punch. My personal favourite is spark but that is for a personal reason and I am probably in a minority of one on that. Also if this makes you hot under the collar check out raspberry swirls 😁
I rarely comment on videos, but as a longtime Tori fan, your reaction blew me away because without knowing anything about her, you hit the nail on the head with everything that makes her so special. I experienced so much joy watching how deeply she affected you. Thank you so much! Subscribing!
“Little Earthquakes” is an amazing, amazing album. I was completely in love with her and that album. I’ve seen her in concert twice. She’s a siren who endured a lot in her youth. The title track alone is worth checking out.
You should definitely check out her live version of Winter from Live at Montreux 91/92. Absolutely stunning. It was recorded in 1991, before her first album was released and it’s kind of astonishing how she just appeared on the scene so fully formed as a live artist. Also check her out with a band. I would recommend something from her Live at West 54th Street show from 1998 (Precious Things, Caught a Lite Sneeze or Iieee for instance). For something a bit different, there’s a fantastic version of Father Lucifer from Letterman in 1996 where she incorporates parts of the theme from the Exorcist as well as Smalltown Boy by Bronski Beat.
I was going to suggest this exact performance as well. Dream Theater even did a cover of this during the same session they did the live tracks on the B side of Change of Seasons with Derek Sherinian on the keys. Chills all around!
It's a great performance, but given that this reactor is a pianist himself, I would encourage him to look beyond just the videos that are popular among TH-cam reactors. For some reason, that Montreux performance and the Crucify video are most watched, while there are hundreds or more videos of Tori performing in extraordinary ways. For great performances overall, I'd also encourage people to look for the RAINN fundraiser performance from 1996 (97?), particularly the songs Little Amsterdam, Caught a Lite Sneeze and Muhammad My Friend. For great piano, I'd suggest looking up live performances of Precious Things, Cornflake Girl, Carbon, I Can't See New York, Father Lucifer, Shattering Sea, Star Whisperer and Concertina (dual piano and electronic keyboard played at once) and (harpsichord) Caught a Lite Sneeze and Blood Roses. And that's just a sampling.
Just so you have it, TH-cam is rampant with mislabeling, here's a link to the live performance of Winter from the '91/'92 Montreux Pop Festival. th-cam.com/video/KWmETxWM0h0/w-d-xo.html
@@DavidMichaelCommer I think there are several reasons this particular performance is meaningful, her parents are in the audience, you can actually see Tori making eye contact with her father as she sings a beautiful song she's written about him and their relationship over the years, and that makes the performance particularly emotional. This is only speculation, but given the performance is even before the release of the album, it's not a huge leap to think this might be the first time he'd heard the song performed live with an audience. This is also before her Bösendorfer endorsement, so it's kind of quaint to see her behind whatever piano they had available.
Tori Amos and the song "Winter". Makes me cry every time. I'm old and lost my dad years ago. But we sure had many elk hunting adventures. I still miss him. I sometimes think I could have been a better father to my daughter.
Yes! You got it dude! Thank you! Absolutely timeless! I've seen quit a few reactions of Tori's music from people/content creator's that don't have no were near Trori's Education, artistic experience, let alone her resume. They are clueless, but everybody want to be music credit.
Really great reaction ! I had such a crush on Tori Amos when she produced her first solo album, and indeed her songs always have a sad undertone. I always thought her music is very different, very complex, never mainstream. Complex piano runs, harmonies, simply amazing. Beautiful lyrics.
I discovered Tori Amos yesterday, until the day before yesterday I avoided this topic, I thought it was another pop singer but I admit I was very wrong and I regret it. It's a great vocal, beautiful, artistic and she is a great musician with a great sense of music. I need to go deeper into this topic
A beautiful review. I had tears in my eyes when you spoke of your daughter. Mine is 17 now and very into K-pop. I shall suggest she listens to Tori as well. Thanks. Glenn (not Joanne-she's my partner).
Lo has definido perfectamente! Tori te derrite ! con todas las emociones juntas en una sola cancion. Es hipnotica. Y verte reaccionar es una delicia !!
One of my 7th grade classmates invited me to her concert in either 93 or 94 and I had never heard of her until then, but something struck a chord in my heart right away. I'm a queer trans woman who was deeply closeted back then, but her music(and fan base) were instrumental in giving me hope and being able to feel the things I tried burying!
Awesome Tori Amos once famously said "When someone steals a car in the US they go for a joy ride, when you steal a car in the UK you burn it". She's right JW.😆
you need to check out tori's track 'precious things' start with the studio version, then there are countless excellent live versions to check out - in many of which she basically reinvents the song. she's brilliant.
So much thank you. Tori Amos was the soul of my youth, guaranteed to put you through every emotion. I found you with Jinjer, but would definitely watch every Tori Amos you review.
Thanks for coming back to Tori -- I thought you might be moved her when listening to more songs. I totally understand what you are saying. I don't generally like popular music, but Tori put me under some kind spell after I watched a few live performances. In her live performances, even more of her unique identity comes through. I don't know if it was 'Winter' (Montrueax-blue top version), or 'Precious Things' live (99 or 98), or 'Father Lucifer' on Letterman or her Sunny Florida concert, but somewhere along the way I became infatuated --which doesn't happen to me. Always enjoy your breakdowns and learn something -- thanks!
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and feelings with us. I've been listening to Tori for about 25 years now, and I have never had a stronger emotional connection to any other musician. Your words about wanting your daughter to be inspired by her nearly brought me to tears. If only all of us could feel as free to be our authentic selves! I am sure that you have received a ton of requests to react to different songs, but I would suggest either Cooling (Sessions at West 54th live), Bells for Her (Welcome to Sunny Florida live), or Iieee (VH1 Storytellers live). Sorry for the long diatribe! I could go on about Tori forever. Enjoy your journey!
you did it right, Tori is a superb pianist, vocalist, and composer, her greatest ability in my opinion though is conveying emotion. She can make you feel so many emotions through just one song. Her lyrics are at times intentionally vague and highly metaphorical, allowing each listener to glean their own meaning of them. As others have said shes always better live, the record companies were always trying to reign her in, the less they control a performance, the better it will be. Several commenters have suggested winter, ive always loved that song, but it really hits different after becoming a father of a girl. Honey, Sugar, and beauty if speed are a few of my personal favorites, for personal reasons, but you cant miss with any of her songs.
I love this song so much. So nice to see someone feel it so much too. This song hits different on different days too. Sometimes it makes me cry HARD and other days it makes me feel cheeky or defiant. And lots of other things. So much fun to listen to and to sing with. Love that you love it too. Exciting for your daughter to have such a great dad to introduce her to this sort of music. Wonderful!! ❤️
Don’t need the breakdowns, just happy to see more reactions. The Venn diagram of metal and Tori Amos fans is an unusual combination but more common than people realise!
I fell in love with her and her music in 1992 when I was 14yo. To this day, she is my favorite songwriter, vocalist, and musician. Check out her album "Under the Pink."
This is my favorite reaction for this song, true raw emotion. I feel the same as you do about this song. It's awesome, Tori is beautful. She's cool and intelligent. Thank you for reacting to this it's one of my all time favorite songs. It's perfect!
You should react to Night of Hunters by Tori. It's a "concept album that Amos has described as "a 21st century song cycle inspired by classical music themes spanning over 400 years."
I found Tori Amos in 1992 when I was 12 years old. Her music has had a profound effect on me as a woman. She is the very definition of female power and feminism and her music has helped shape me as a woman. She was so empowering and she continues to be a force. She’s an icon.
As teenagers we were once invited to a drum circle at night time by a teacher's aide and though she knew it was inappropriate to ask us kids if we wanted to go, she had overheard us listening to Tori Amos ❤ we saw a lot of bonding that night and realized old people LOL *people in their thirties* could be cool. At 42 yrs old I still listen to Tori a lot, she is on tour now. Thanks for you deep reaction 🎶
I’ve been anxiously waiting for you to do another Tori reaction, because I knew you would have this exact reaction. She is a phenomenal talent and presence, and certainly a force to be reckoned with. You should absolutely check out her live performance of Winter (Montreux). It is breathtaking.
Seeing Tori perform live several times always felt very intimate and was mesmerizing & mind blowing. Speaking of blushing, at one of the shows she wore a very short dress and nothing else. She deliberately angled herself so that we occasionally got a good look underneath. At one point between songs she looked directly in our direction, and with a coy smile said “I know what you’re looking at, boys.” Me and my girlfriend both blushed. Her music still moves me. Amazing talent and genuine person.

I'm a straight female who too has a crush on Tori Amos. I grew up with her singing on the radio but I was too into Punk, Ska & American Skater-punk type music that I wouldn't allow myself to buy any of Tori's music even though I secretly loved her sound. I knew my brother had a crush on her & now I know why.
What a lucky little girl you have to have a dad that would listen to Tori and think about making sure she hears it. My #53rd Tori show is in June can't wait
I was 12 when this album came out, and just like you want for your daughter, it showed me a whole world of possibilities I didn't know existed. It changed my life.
I used to be so into Tori Amos even tho her music wasn’t my usual vibe. But it worked for me when my life was its most chaotic and dramatic. Also a few singers have made me feel like I was blushing watching them. I got into social distortion and when I saw the video for “I was wrong”, my face got hot and I realized I had a mad crush on the frontman Mike Ness. I once had an isnant friendship start when I was bartending and the guy I was serving mentioned his crush on Mike Ness, and I knew we were destined to be besties.
Loved the honest review, but she's hopping around in quite unusual chord progressions. I really wouldn't mind an in-depth analysis of this song, just to hear your take on the composition. If you can pull it off without melting, that is ;-) Thanks John.
Tori's catalogue is a rabbit hole well worth getting lost in. A few next suggestions are Caught a Lite Sneeze, Wednesday, Mary Jane, the entire album "Under the Pink".
Came here for the TOOL, stayed for the Tori! Welcome to my full-decade, 90's obsession/crush. I'm sure a million people have mentioned it, but she has a live video floating around where Maynard James K sits on her piano stool next to her and they sing her song Muhammad My Friend.
This is 1992. But if you watch her live stuff from '98, specifically the Sessions at 54th performance, you'll have more than a crush on her. She's matured a little, has a ton of swagger, and plays the fuck out of those songs. Precious Things will make all your hairs stand up. th-cam.com/video/9qOjGLRgl2o/w-d-xo.html
ive seen her live. the piano bench was perpendicular to the audience and had two pianos, one harpsichord and another keyed instrument. ....there arent words to go on.
The video edit for this song is terrible (they cut out some of the best parts). I love the cheerleaders for Anne Boleyn, though. Tori always makes me cry, too. :) I think you would really enjoy Yes, Anastasia.
I love Tori and I’m more of a metal fan, haha. 😁 I love the version of Northern Lad which looks like a sound check, also all of the Scarlet’s Walk album.
The metal fans I know all seem to want a sort of emotional rawness and intensity in their music -- so it doesn't surprise me much at this point that so many also love Tori.
I wouldn’t say that she’s very influenced by Kate Bush. They both play the piano, and they both make quite dramatic music. But Tori is more autobiographic, while Kate Bush is more of a storyteller. Tori is less experimental than Kate, and more classical in her songwriting. And so much about Tori is the live experience, while Kate is much more about the studio recording. There is definitely influence there, but I believe Tori when she says that while she knew of Kate Bush, she was much more influenced by the male rock stars of the 60’s and 70’s.
I couldn't get enough of this song after the reaction so I instantly went and watched a few live versions of Crucify and you're right - there's something completely magical about her playing live!
🎵🎸Moody, atmospheric, instrumental, one-man-band prog? Right this way 👇
th-cam.com/video/1nWe3g_7pqA/w-d-xo.html
It’s deeply joyful watching her steal others’ hearts too. She’s my favourite thief of all time.
I love watching this man fall in love with Tori. I know there is a spiritual connection here 😂❤
I hope you go back to her... Happy Phontom, Leather, Me and a Gun, Silent all these years, and Criminal are my favorites!

She's just so beautiful. Incredible . All the best to you my brother, and everyone out there. You seem like a really nice guy . Bless
She was so beautiful here and mesmerising ❤
So spot on about playing this for your daughter-Tori literally saved my life as a teenager. ❤
She melts me every freaking time. I’ve loved her for over 20 years. Great reaction!
Thank you, Joy! :)
Me too ♥️🫠

Yep i agree :)
Yes! The record company made her cut it for the video. I have listened to the album so much I forgot about that. Such a shame they did that.
Spark is a great song! It introduced me to her music. I always have that on my playlist.
We're at least a club of two. Spark just hits all the right nerves. She took my virginity with Cornflake Girl though. :-D
I agree. Spark is my favorite too. Prob for the same reason as you I'm afraid. 😢🤟✌️🧡
Jackie’s Strength
Tori really is unique and complex ...... and you did her justice! Thanks! (and it was 1992)
Thank you, Ruth!
Fell in love with her ever since I saw her do Baker Baker on the Tonight Show ....
It's so nice to hear a pro outline the many reasons I adore Tori!!!
This is the first Tori song I've heard and my reaction was just like yours!
She got to me straight away ❤.
I still remember hearing this for the first time on the radio when it was new.
don't worry, she has that effect on a lot of us...!!!!!D ❤️🔥

Tori really appeals to us metal guys. Check out Silent All These Years.
Nice commentary on this song. This album came out around 30 years ago and I still get chills when I listen to this, China, and Winter.

This is my favorite reaction for this song, true raw emotion. I feel the same as you do about this song. It's awesome, Tori is beautful. She's cool and intelligent. Thank you for reacting to this it's one of my all time favorite songs. It's perfect!
Thank you, Andy!
You should do Cornflake Girl, it's a fun song, vocals are great, really entertaining!
ooh I adore this pure dive into Tori Amos land, sign me UP
You should react to Night of Hunters by Tori. It's a "concept album that Amos has described as "a 21st century song cycle inspired by classical music themes spanning over 400 years."
Woot! Definitely start from this album and move forward.
It’s unbelievably satisfying to see someone have the same reaction to Tori as me.
If I may suggest, “Mother” is really quite a piece.
I didn’t know the video cut the song up and excluded a few parts. It’s a pity, since you liked it so much-the parts they cut are my favorites.

‘Winter’ is the ultimate father/daughter song.
What a lucky little girl you have to have a dad that would listen to Tori and think about making sure she hears it. My #53rd Tori show is in June can't wait
We are taking our 11 year old to see her in June. I'm thrilled that she is touring this year and we have that opportunity to take her.
you really should see her play live... i don't know who but some one said - in the 90ies - that tori amos doesn't play her piano, she f*cks it :D
The Piano bench would have some great stories to tell, I'm sure! Lol.
I was 12 when this album came out, and just like you want for your daughter, it showed me a whole world of possibilities I didn't know existed. It changed my life.
Me too!
Dude. You should do "Silent All These Years" next
More Tori. Try "Winter" and "Cornflake Girl".
Fun reaction and honestly I ship you and Tori
Would love to see you react to Yes, Anastasia by Tori.
You should also check out Blood Roses
This is 1992. But if you watch her live stuff from '98, specifically the Sessions at 54th performance, you'll have more than a crush on her. She's matured a little, has a ton of swagger, and plays the fuck out of those songs. Precious Things will make all your hairs stand up. th-cam.com/video/9qOjGLRgl2o/w-d-xo.html
There’s some weird cuts in this video of the original song. Listen to the full version and you’ll love it even more.
No one comes close..........🙏🇭🇲
Pretty good for someone who taught herself to play piano at 2, composed at 3 and was admitted to the Peabody conservatory at 5.
Or "1000 Oceans"
ive seen her live. the piano bench was perpendicular to the audience and had two pianos, one harpsichord and another keyed instrument.
....there arent words to go on.
except that was the moment i realized i was super super gay.
so i relate. lol
she dated trent reznor. this is newer than when she first came out.
yes Tori is a feminist icon. some of her shit gets darrk. me and a gun is a song youll have to prep yourself for.
and she was in an 80s hair band called Y Kant Tori Read.
sorry im replying as i watch.
Aww... the shortened "radio" version. That's a shame. There are some really nice piano parts missing in this one from the full version.
The video edit for this song is terrible (they cut out some of the best parts). I love the cheerleaders for Anne Boleyn, though.
Tori always makes me cry, too. :) I think you would really enjoy Yes, Anastasia.
👍👊👍
I love Tori and I’m more of a metal fan, haha. 😁
I love the version of Northern Lad which looks like a sound check, also all of the Scarlet’s Walk album.
The metal fans I know all seem to want a sort of emotional rawness and intensity in their music -- so it doesn't surprise me much at this point that so many also love Tori.
YAS!!!! "When Pianos try to be Guitars."
Tori’s a genius. Without a doubt. React to much more of her. Check out Laura Nyro who paved the way for female singer/songwriters.
She’s very Kate Bush influenced. She actually does a great live cover of And Dream Of Sheep here on youtube. Great reaction!
Its looks 90's but i never heard... of her... maybe i mis some... hhe... actually i just feel enjoyable...
Even a little boy.
When it comes to Tori, please react to LIVE versions only 😎😉 they are 100times better . Thanks for the vid 🔥
I couldn't get enough of this song after the reaction so I instantly went and watched a few live versions of Crucify and you're right - there's something completely magical about her playing live!
@@JWSoundworks2 looking for more Tori live reactions then ;) Winter, Sugar, Caught a Lite Sneeze are among the best 🔥
Please react to Winter and/or Precious Things😀👍
