Please, please, please do more Tori! She is, in my opinion, the best lyricist and she is incredible on the piano and as a vocalist. A powerhouse live. She is on another level! My absolute favorite artist.
@@popland1977 Disagree because her voice is and has always been amazing. Then and now. Tori live is even better than on record and her songwriting is wonderful. Plays two pianos even harpsichord at the same time.
I disagree. I've seen many Tori Amos concerts from the beginning of her solo career playing at very small venues. For me, her earliest performances were more personalized and poetically emotional journeys. It was mostly just her on piano, with some a cappella thrown in (Most famously for "Me and a Gun"). As her venues grew, so did the size of her backing band. As she was emotionally healing herself through her music, she had less raw emotional pain to draw from in her concerts. Couple that with a larger band and larger venues and we had less of a personal experience with Tori. I feel her albums reflect this as well. Her first solo album "Little Earthquakes" is an absolute masterpiece with every song. She did some real soul searching on that album that she hasn't equaled since.
This may just be her best live performance.......I think, this just may be just one of the best live performances EVER from any solo artist. So emotional, so honest, so skilled, just incomprehensible !
This song gets me every time. My dad passed in 1995. I can't help but think of him every time I hear this song. Getting choked up right now. 💔 But this song helped me through that difficult time. Sufficed to say, this is my favorite Tori song because it's so personal to me.
You are right it is pretty much her singing poetry because pretty much any thing she writes is a form of lyrical poetry . She writes so much that she wants to be subjective and have people interpret it how they need for themselves . Yet so much of her work is pointed and specific . Performances like ME AND A GUN there is no misinterpreting her message . She is one of the most powerful writers to have emerged in modern music . Can’t wait to hear your other reactions to her !
Every single performance from this era of Tori’s career is stunning. You can’t go wrong with any of them. This is from a compilation album from the Montreux Jazz Festival. Features 2 separate performance from both the 91 and 92 festival.
I have followed her since Little Earthquakes. There is nothing like her. NOTHING. Your reaction at 8:46 is priceless and what us Toriphiles have been experiencing for years .Welcome to the club. lol
I saw her live 5 times. First time was in 91 during that tour. I sat about 7-10 feet in front of her in a small theater on the UCSB campus. And this is exactly what it was like. It changed my life. I know this sounds lame, but she looked straight into my eyes several times as she sang. Absolutely amazing.
@@DereckReacts check out the live video of "here in my head". The one that 3:58 long by keikobad1980 or whatever. Gives you a great feel for what those shows were really like. Ultra intimate. You mention how you could hear a pin drop. The audience was perfectly silent during every song. People were crying and just in awe. Everyone knew they were witnessing greatness. The whole show was just her and the piano. Best show I've ever seen, that 91 show at UCSB.
I LOVE getting to see people discover T-it is such a treat. I distinctly remember the first song I heard and it changed me. To see her live is beyond amazing...Easily one of the most profound concert experiences I’ve ever had. You cannot see her once, guaranteed.
You missed the point. She LOVES her father and the whole song is a retrospective of her relation with her father, the guidance and advise, her decisions about her path and the need to have the same protective presence in her life even when she has "grey hair" and "all the white horses have gone ahead". The magic phrase here is "when you gonna love YOU as much as I do" as a token of a father's love for his growing daughter.
I saw Tori in Switzerland back in the early 2000's when I was 12.. a friend brought me and I had zero idea who she was.. during the show I started to literally focus and hearing her voice I started to almost hallucinate.. that's never happened before or after with any artist.. magical experience....
She is a amazing artist, composer, writer, and emotive singer. She can capture what emotion she wants you to feel & you get hit with it. Nothing like Tori & some headphones turned up as loud as possible 💫
Tori Amos is one of the best female vocalists (if not the best) I have ever heard. Her lyrics are raw. Add this to her piano virtuosity, and you have a phenomenal & unique artist.
Tori Amos and Madonna are my favourite artists of all time. Tori Amos is amazing live and she does some of the best cover versions of others songs. I saw her in Melbourne Australia the week Kylie Minogue announced she was diagnosed with breast cancer and she performed the most beautifully haunting version of Can’t get you out of my head ❤️
Yes, classic Tori is the emphasizing of her words and word choice. It’s her lingo, her pronunciation, passion, emotion. She’s a whirlwind. You really can’t sing along during live shows because she changes it up every time with the atmosphere and mood of that evening. Just watch in awe, each live show is unique.... Every performance is amazing.
I discovered her when I was in college, this song made me a fan forever and effected me like no other song ever has...spiritual. I saw her that same year in concert, amazing. I urge you to listen to this song off her album...the back ground orchestra in it is amazing. Her whole album little earthquakes is amazing every song is gold on that album.
I also discovered Tori Amos while in college. I saw someone mention her name, so I searched and became obsessed last year when I heard A Sorta Fairytale and Cornflake Girl. I love her discography. Super talented and underrated artist. I can't get enough of her music now ❤️
I discovered Tori Amos in 1992, I was 12. She was and is my all time favorite musician. Her music is amazing, she touches me in all the feels. It’s so nostalgic for me. Thank you for reviewing this song. It’s one of my favorites.
This performance is the absolute best version Tori put on display. The raw emotion and on the cusp of tears vocals leaves you in awe every time. This is a gripping and gut wrenching performance of perfection. Her piano solo was off the hook, without even looking she hit the keys hard, fast and perfect. There probably wasn’t a dry eye afterwards and yes Pin Dropped they were in amazement.
Tori was the youngest person ever accepted into John Hopkins at the age of 5..then expelled at age 11 for basically being a rebel..then they had her do a commencement speech later on...just shows you how much of an artist she is...she is a genius because she combines vocal command, music arrangement, and visual emotion....but what I love most is her writing ability...she tackles alot of subjects with no fear and her use of imagery in her writing is basically poetry at its best.
Omg you have no idea what’s ahead of you. Tori Amos is insanely incredible. She is a piano prodigy FYI. She still holds the record for being the youngest individual, at the age of 5, to be accepted into the Peabody Music Conservatory. She is very well-known and has a huge devout following. Every song and album is different and superb in their own right. Her lyrics are a lot of fun to analyze. She uses a lot of metaphors. Start with her debut album, Little Earthquakes, and go in order from there. Please react to more Tori. I would recommend reacting to her song Precious Things live next. Please. Thank you for the reaction. :)
she has a very loyal and devout followers (not cultists though) but I think for how amazing she is, she's way too under rated. Its a huge tragedy, she's never been inducted in the hall of fame
I love this song. Just so heartfelt and beautiful. I love to listen to this song regularly. There is something different every time you listen to it. To me, the white horse are the self waiting and waiting to come out and play. But for some, it never happens, or like here, it happens too late, when the bloom of youth or the innocence has gone. The need for recognition from her father is so gripping. It's a life story in 3 minutes. A masterpiece
This is how it begins. I was in the 4th grade when I heard this song. I'm 31 next month and I've been obsessed with her ever since. You should just listen to the entirety of Little Earthquakes, from Crucify all the way down to the title song Little Earthquakes. She's so nuanced and her lyrics will take you a lifetime to figure out, after another lifetime of trying to actually figure out what she's saying, because she sometimes will almost speak in tongues. When she's performing, Music takes over, and she's not Tori in that moment. Other live versions of songs (i don't think they have videos for these specific performances) are Sugar, Waitress, Cooling, and Precious Things from the To Venus and Back live album. Welcome to the Tori Amos fanclub, lol you'll never run out of things to listen to.
So I've watched a dozen YT "reacts" videos for this song with the same emotional response and often tears. I'm old now, but lucky to have discovered Tori back in the 90's when I was in my 20's. Even though I usually defaulted to classic rock, techno, Beastie Boys, etc.. I couldn't ignore such immense musical talent and passion. I've seen her live 3 times - with the last time being a 1st date with a girl that I've now been married to for over 20 yrs.
Tori has soooooooo many great videos. China, Spark, Raspberry Swirl.... and if you want to check out a stellar live performance, her Sessions at West 54th which aired on PBS is absolutely raw and amazing.
No man she is always that good and she is still that good. I have seen her many times...she is my goddess. Cornflake girl....try that. Waitress...under the pink, little earth quakes or choir girl...you can't go wrong with any of these albums.
I think there's no live recording where Tori is less than amazing, impossible to find :) Love your reactions, hope that you'll review other Tori's stuff, you'll see that most of her music videos are as intricate as her lyrics and stunningly beautiful!
Notice all the white horses are still in bed. But the that last verse is, all the white horses have gone ahead. It's a respectful but challenging situation with her dad at the beginning, but there's a passing of the torch at the end.
Yeah, she does great at the piano. She attended the Peabody Conservatory as it’s youngest student ever... at five years old.... for piano. She’s a piano player.
I love watching your reactions...intelligent, thoughtful and with heart. you have really helped me during this quarantine period, so thank you. I would love to see your reaction to Tori Amos "Take To The Sky/Datura" live in Berlin. Its amazing!!! :) Peace.
Like others said, any song from Tori Amos will work if you liked this one! The track is titled 91/92 because she released a live album called Montreux 91/92 (Montreux is a famous jazz festival in Switzerland and she performed there those years). Precious Things from the 91 concert is fabulous and shows a more confrontational side of her!
I saw Tori at King TuT's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow at the start of her career and then again later at the larger Candleriggs Hall. On both occasions she gave perfect virtuoso performances.
Love Tori Amos.I have seen her live so many times. She has an incredible virtuosity as a musician. Her voice, her songs..the delivery...everything .Incredible performer...there's a spirituality,a fierce intensity about her work. Her catalogue is really worth exploring but I would recommend you start with her debut album..Little Earthquakes..you will love the melodies, the imagery, the arrangements and her voice...there is an incredible version of Precious Things live and you should react to that...it is amazing live..and might actually be in this set from Montreaux.
...'China' is also a beautiful performance. She was a child prodigy on the piano and studied music ,classically trained...but later ventured to carve her own path and create her own music.Incredible body of work
I love your reaction. I can't remember ever being so moved by any performer ever as in this performance. It is frankly, perfect. " When you gonna make up your mind. When you gonna love you as I do". There is tension in her relationship with her dad but there is real love there too. He was a Methodist minister.
It's from the Live at Montreux DVD which has 2 different shows both recorded at the Montreux jazz festival one in 1991 and one in 1992. The keyboard performance was in 91 and she has an actual piano in 92.
I had to smile when you said 'This may be the best live performance she's ever done', knowing all the incredible performances to come over the next dozen years! She was truly a phenomenon live back in the day. Not many 'official' live releases, but so many fantastic bootleg recordings. Listen to 'Juarez' from London '99, 'Pandora's Aquarium' from the 2001 tour, gah so many others!
I love Tori Amos, I made a lot of art glass with her back up singing. Many people did not like her music but I called the shots and listened to her daily. She inspired me
From full Peabody at John Hopkins Music scholarship awarded for her already self composed songs by the age of 5, they dropped her at 11 for basically wanting to write music she wanted not just what they wanted her to write. Her music is more then poetry, its like her reading her personal diary out in song. She commands a piano, the piano bows to her. Saw her on a morning talk show, the host joked about how easily she composed songs and laughed. She then created song, piano and lyrics on the spot, and it was catchy.
If you're going on a Tori journey I am coming with you. So much to explore. I am almost jealous that you are getting to hear her for the first time. You got a new sub from me friend :)
I wouldn't even try and work out my favourite Tori track but I do adore "Past The Mission", in no small part due to Trent Reznor's incredibly understated and weirdly sensual backing vocal
The first time I heard Tori Amos, I HATED her music. My sister played her all the dang time and I even told her to shut it off. Then I started to listen instead of just "hearing"--I now have 5 Tori Amos albums, plus tons of singles. She's my favorite artist, and Winter--tied with Precious Things--are my favorite songs. Although Bouncing Off Clouds is up there, too, plus Caught a Light Sneeze, Talula...okay, I love them all!
pleaaaase do a reaction of her live performance of "me and a gun"! you've only scratched the surface of her live performances; she's truly magical onstage
Suggestions for further exploration: Yes, Anastasia; Sugar (Live); Happy Phantom; Raspberry Swirl; Hotel; Space Dog; Playboy Mommy; Datura; Suede; Cooling She's written hundreds of songs & just released a book. It's called Resistance & she reads it for the audio book. Her voice is soothing and she's a wise woman. You'll learn a lot about her by checking out the press she's been doing for it.
I thought he was telling her no prince is coming, in the end she doesn't listen and all the white horses have passed her by. She never made up her mind, she never chose.
Please, please, please do more Tori! She is, in my opinion, the best lyricist and she is incredible on the piano and as a vocalist. A powerhouse live. She is on another level! My absolute favorite artist.

Tori Amos and Kylie Minogue are my idols, my icons, but so very very different.
Tori met Kylie.
Tori covered Kylie.
They are my religion.
Tori Amos is amazing and I love watching your reactions. Saw her perform live in Austin, TX. So, so good!
The "Crucify"-video made me a fan. Fantastic song. She's done many more after that, but start there.
Her best song, among many great songs she has composed. Thanks for reacting to this, Derek. And it's a bonus to look at your cute face.
Tori and Kate bush are the best! Both so talented and magical xxxxxx💚
I would love to take you to a concert of hers, amazing people, amazing energy 💗💕
She's amazing! So underrated.
If you're going on a Tori journey I am coming with you. So much to explore. I am almost jealous that you are getting to hear her for the first time. You got a new sub from me friend :)
Tori Amos - Precious Things live in Chicago
Dude…this amazing but normal for her…she is still to this day mind blowing
My favorites Tori Amos songs are "Cornflake girl", her biggest hit?, and Past the Mission.
I wouldn't even try and work out my favourite Tori track but I do adore "Past The Mission", in no small part due to Trent Reznor's incredibly understated and weirdly sensual backing vocal
Haunting Masterpiece!
She portrays this song... her voice matures as she ages in the song. Then she remembers back to being a child with the lilt at the end.
You should do an album review of hers, especially of 'Scarlet's walk'.
Scarlet’s Walk got me through a couple of very brutal breakups. Actually, her music has been getting me through life since ‘91. 9 concerts so far...
Her very best is Scarets
I was hoping you would react to Tori Amos! =)
Not a lot of people from the mainstream understand Tori. She’s like an ethereal creature.
Suggestions for further exploration: Yes, Anastasia; Sugar (Live); Happy Phantom; Raspberry Swirl; Hotel; Space Dog; Playboy Mommy; Datura; Suede; Cooling
She's written hundreds of songs & just released a book. It's called Resistance & she reads it for the audio book. Her voice is soothing and she's a wise woman. You'll learn a lot about her by checking out the press she's been doing for it.
All great choices. But it’s Tori so... you can’t go wrong!
Cooling is a masterpiece
Her first single Silent All These Years came out when I was in high school. I've been on the journey ever since. 💛💛💛💛
Please do here in my head Tori Amos
seconded.
I thought he was telling her no prince is coming, in the end she doesn't listen and all the white horses have passed her by. She never made up her mind, she never chose.
